Eli Roth Guest Directs Inglourious Basterds

A couple weeks ago we published some photos from the set of Inglourious Basterds. Some people noticed that director Quentin Tarantino was mysteriously absent from the Goerlitz set. I just wrote it off as second unit photography, but the fact of the matter is that Tarantino wasn’t on set — because Eli Roth was the director of that sequence. According to Tatantino Archives, Roth is directing the “film within the film”, which stars Daniel Bruhl as a Nazi sniper and a group of GIs on a suicide mission. So there you have it - not only does Eli Roth co-star in the film, but he also guest directs. Thanks to /Film reader Christopher M for the tip.

Quentin Tarantino & Eli Roth Best Friends Forever <3
  • HOLY SHIT I was so fucking nervous reading this, thinking Roth would be directing an actual scene of the film. When I realized it was the german propaganda film, I literally sighed, loudly, in relief. JESUS.

Sounds cool I dig eli roth
It sounds like hes directing the characters backstory sort of like the animated sequence in kill bill
  • dave
    Eli Roth is a hack.
  • lpfanaddy
My hopes for this movie just plummeted down a few flights of stairs. Eli Roth is an awful actor and an even worse filmmaker. Tarantino is ruining his credibility surrounding himself with the likes of Roth.
  • Yoji
    Eli Roth is amaazzziinnggg.
  • jamie
man, i wish judd apatow was directing this :(

or at least producing it, imagine seth rogen as a stoner nazi general!!!!! wouldn't that be hilarious? and they could talk about porn and sex and forgettable pop culture stuff
  • Graham
how is he a hack ?
  • Jr. Said Monkey
    Why?
  • Griffin
Why is Tarantino on Eli Roth's nuts so much?
  • Christopher Marc
let's get this straight it's going to be a propaganda film segment...there isn't much Roth can do to mess it up..lol calm down
  • MrMad2001
I fail to see the big deal with Eli. Two hours of looking at my grundle in a mirror is better than watching cabin fever.
  • Ant
Why not get Brett Ratner in or maybe Renny Harlin, no no wait Uwe Boll is the man.

I hate it when they call it "guest directing." That's almost as absurd to me as a movie with a "special guest appearance by" title... if it's a movie, then it's an appearance. Like Robin Williams says (I'm paraphrasing) "those things you see on prescription labels that say 'side effects'... I'd call those 'effects,' really."

Tarantino waters down his name by being associated with Roth. whatever.

    @ Graham

    Nope.

Roth is bad because his movies aren't anything special, they can't even be qualified as "good". Lets take a look here:

Cabin Fever - "Oh hey! Lets remake evil dead, but cut out the undead and everything that made it remotely good! Lets also use that guy from Boy Meets World!"

Hostel - "What if we made a movie right? But its just like torture! That'd be awesome."

Hostel II - "Lets remake the first one, but with more stupid!"

Trailer Trash - "I've ran out of napkins to write one, I'll just take what made Grindhouse cooler and inflate it to the point of annoyance!"

He's not original, he's not that great. I'm fine with the propaganda film thing (will it feature torture too?) but when I read the headline I assumed he was taking Quentin's balls out of his mouth for a second and directing a scene. (I hate when he people that "special guest directors" are a hollywood term for making one scene feel as though its from a completely different movie.)

Thinking about this I'd think it would have been cooler if Quentin's talented friend Rodriguez directed it.

Good thing Roth isn't doing much. He shouldn't be allowed within twelve feet of a camera.

Just want to say I'm sorry here, was a bit drunk when I wrote that and reading it now I realised a ton of errors were made in structure/spelling/general sentence layout.
  • leon s. kennedy
hello mr.roth . how are you? will hostel part 3 released?
  • aung tun zaw
    I wanna see Hostel : Part ///
  • frank

  • JD
    Jeez...really?
  • Dave
    I want a Tarantino flick. Not a Tarantino/Roth movie.
Don't even let the jackass near the craft service table.
  • Allynd Dudnikov
    @Dave:
You know he's like "acting" in it right?
  • bobby
i have never really liked eli roth.. hopefully his work in this movie will change my mind

im hoping QT will top PULP FICTION!!!
  • bobby
    eli roth sucks!!!

he shouldnt even guest direct this soon to be masterpiece!!!

should he be torturing some hot chick rather than associating with QUENTIN TARANTINO and BRAD PITT!!!!
  • Ryan foley
Tarantino needs to get off his knees, because he's blowing this movie. He casts Eli Roth, BJ Novac, and the extremely annoying kid from freaks and geeks, and now this shit. Eli roth directs shitty torture porn movies. He should have absoultly nothing to do with a Tarantino picture because he is a pretentious hack. If anybod feels any diffrent feel free to respond. Because I would love it! Ryan_n_foley@q.com
