Teaser Trailer: Roland Emmerich’s 2012

Sony has just premiered the teaser trailer for Roland Emmerich’s epic disaster movie 2012. It’s not nearly as good as the Superbowl teaser for Emmerich’s Independence Day, but it does build to a cool “oh my god” moment.

I’ll be completely honest, Emmerich hasn’t made a great movie in the last decade. What’s the chances that this movie will be any better than say 10,000 BC? I really wish Emmerich would turn out another fun disaster film like ID4. And while I can admit this teaser is promising, I have a feeling that 2012 will be nothing more than a bunch of cool disaster effects sequences strung together. And some of you might argue that Independence Day was just that, and you very well could be right. But I think his last few films have lacked the comedy, energy and characters of ID4. Watch the trailer and tell me what you think in the comments below.

Watch the trailer in High Definition on Moviefone.com. 2012 hits theaters on July 10th 2009.

I really though this would be good but although this trailer shows a tidal wave seriously wiping out a ton of monks it doesn't seem realistic although it could happen i don't believe it would happen like this.

Apparently there are four trailers for this film:

1: This trailer based on a tidal wave

2: A second trailer being released in January based on a volcanic eruption and a meteor shower

3: A third trailer released in April showing hurricanes, storms and an earthquake

4:The final trailer released in June which will include all the action shots from the first three trailers and show the main charecters and also show the earth covered in fire then exploding (Although this wont be in the movie and is used as a though a charecter i thinking!

    The plot is this:

When Global warming and climate change take effect and the ancient Mayan calender comes to an end the world experiences huge climate change as the world changes a family of four, a tax man and an electrician struggle to survive as the group try to escape the various environmental disasters.

Apparently the world will not be destroyed and because this is a 12A film the family will survive!

    Did anyone actually google '2012'?
    It was great -
The first hit was a news article from FOX titled "Look Out 2012, Sarah Palin’s Comin’ Atcha!"

Yes, I see the connection between the end of the world and a Palin Presidency. I think that as a political/environmental satire this movie could actually work, they should consider that.

I wonder if FOX news has seen this yet?
  • Remember when Aliens blowing up national monuments was cool?

    @ chris devine

How dare that hack of a film fan use the wrong title form The Shinning!!!! His grammar looks like Crap with a capital 'C'!!! Kubrick would be rolling in his grave!!! EXCLAMATIONS!!!!!!!!

    "You've got the Shinning."

    "You mean 'Shining'!"

"Shh! You want to get sued?"
  • Good advertisment of a film that's based on mere theories. I'm getting a little sick and tired of all this "2012 end of the world" nonsense. I think people actually believe the world will end in 2012 because they believe that the Mayans have "never been wrong before in their predictions." So they're immortal to being wrong?

wow i thought that it was a giant avalanche going down the mountain then i looked at the background..

and i was like "oh shit" haha..

hopefully the movie will be good considering the goodcast that it has.. and hopefully its not as empty as alot of roland emmerich films..this teaser actually got my hopes up becasue i thought the movie was going 2 b stupid... dat giant water wave or watever it is would look good in the IMAX by the way..in 3-d!!!

Hey look, it's "Inconvenient Truth: The Mega Action-Spectacular"
Blah, blah, blah, Global warming is a bunch of B.S., blah, blah, blah
  • Independence Day is one of the greatest popcorn films ever made. I saw that at the famed Ziegfeld theater in NYC and people loved it. There are flaws, but over all its a hell of an entertainment!

I have no opnion. it's like 20 secs long.

Seriously, save your opinions and rants and hate for when a real trailer comes or *gasp* ... after you've seen the movie, huh?

shit not allowing gay marraige has melted the polar ice caps and destroyed tibet. The beastie boys are pissed, thanks california.

    Eww.

It'd have been more effective if they just cut to "They wouldn't." before showing the monks getting swept away.

Just a quick two-second shot of the water flowing over the Himalayas and you've got a million butts in your seats.

"google search: 2012" - such lazy marketing just to rely on all the crazy websites about the end of the world!

why are we all so cynical, can't we have a movie about the rebirth of human thinking (a much more optimistic train of thought in a shitty time of credit crunches and wars)?
  • authentic.imitation
    yawn.
  • >Emmerich hasn’t made a great movie in the last decade.

Sorry Peter, but Emmerich hasn't made any good movie at all. Even ID4, which could be considered as his greatest, is totally bollocks and features such lame directing and storytelling, it hurts. Emmerich is great at making cheap FX look expensive and thats about him. This one will suck for sure, too.

when that jj abrams movie cloverfield came out,i remember folk thought THAT was about a mythos monster from a lovecraft novel. they thought it was suposed to destroy the world...and find out it was just a big ass 300 ft baby looking for it's parents.lol as much as i liked that movie,it would have been nice to see it go the mythos direction and im STILL waiting for someone to make a lovecraft book into a great movie.as for this movie i know ima see it.im a sucker for special effects and disaster movies.i just love action.guess thats why i see some good in movies like godzilla and day after tomorrow.granted some of thier story lines might be lame but i get caught up in the effects some time.probably another reason why i like micheal bay when others don't...mater of fact, seeing a fight between clover and godzilla duke'n it out in a big city would be sweeeeeeet.kinda like that arcade game rampage!
  • Captain Awesome
    Woooo! More Roland Emmerich garbage!
  • gocitizen
truth be told, I'd probably have to shell-out for glow-eyed amphibious bears.
...and I'm a sucker for any time "nature" makes choices that save the planet.

There probably is material in the 2012 mythology for an interesting film, but it's most definitely not going to be made by Emmerich. This all makes me think of the curious case of the crystal skulls.
  • Dan
    HEY PETER!!

Do you have a link to the ID4 Super Bowl spot?? I always hear it referenced but I've never seen it...
  • @ gocitizen

The amphibious bears are exactly why I'm going to see this movie - their eyes glow red! Go ahead, man, tell her how you feel
  • gocitizen
I envision a lot of desparate phone calls between loved ones telling each other that they are sorry and that they love each other and that they can't be stopped from doing what they are going to do, so don't even try.

...and while the hero is under a mile of water trying to pull the drain plug out and save the world, he will be attacked by a school of amphibious bears.
  • Greyson
Interesting. A better trailer would have been better but thank you for this none the less. It can't be worse than Godzilla.
  • Seth
    'the hell's with that music?
  • I thought that this was going to be based on the Whitley Shrieber book, but I guess I was wrong. Didn't seem like something that Emmerich would adapt.
  • Literal disaster.

Not even an official website yet. Lame. The IMDb page is the 9th result down. Come on!
  • Blackstar
Looks like the prequel to "Waterworld". And I don't think it is going to be any better.
  • h2opr00f
The bad CGI takes away any of the "oh shit" factor..
  • StarFox
Such a shame, because there's a really great movie to be made about the mythos of 2012. I'm surprised this was set in the Himalayas, because it was the Mayans that foretold the end in 2012 (the Mayan Calendar ends on Dec. 21, 2012, which is a day when all the planets will be in perfect alignment). There's a great story there based in truth a fact, but this will be another sci-fi disaster extravaganza with no relation to the actual events surrounding that date or the spiritual consequences.
  • blueberry
    This solves it!

The day after tomorrow is 2012, which means today is December 30, 2011.

    Genious.

Looks and sounds kinda like LOST.
  • What "is Crackin"
No, this looks undeniably sick. Movie could suck, but teaser = boner.
  • Deathmask Divine
I liked most of Emmerich films.
I don't see why everybody hates him.
Yea hes not the best.....but hes not the worst!
  • they told us to google it because it should attract more fans because there are supposedly a billion things that are going to go wrong in 2012. if fans see just one of those things and they think it would be cool to see in theaters than youve got peole wanting to this this film.
  • Easy, there, buddy. Kubrick might barely register this or he might even enjoy it. How well did you know the guy? I could be wrong, but I don't think our lord and savior Stanley Kubrick wrote that music. As for this particular trifle, I thought The Day After Tomorrow was way funnier than Independence Day. And I for one look forward to this being just as stupid.
  • Movie Reviewer Guy
Emmerich is/was/always will be a hack. NEXT.
  • helicopters
    i went ahead and google searched '2012' like the trailer suggested, and found this;

    http://www.universetoday.com/2008/05/19/no-doom...

i don't think that's what the film makers intended.
  • chris devine
How dare that hack of a Filmmaker use the original music form The Shinning Trailer!!!! This movie looks like Crap!!! Just like his last movie!!!! Kubrick would be rolling in his grave!
  • Arch Stanton
I agree with Nate. This looks retarded.

    In a bad way.
  • Mr. B
    @ Nate

Exactly. What kind of sad marketing hack thinks making us Google stuff is going to help sell this film to us. We're lazy. I'd rather just wait for the full trailer.
  • Dylan
I actually read the script of this movie and its entertaining but not a great script. Also a pretty stupid ending.
  • Aaron
Is is just me or does the scale of the water look way off? Those waves look big, bot not nearly as big as the Himalayas. Granted, it's probably impossible to simulate water at that scale.
  • Nate
Did a trailer jus tell me to google something? Christ. The movie has ALREADY jumped the shark, and it's not anywhere near release.
