HBO has given the greenlight to film a pilot based on George R.R. Martin’s bestselling fantasy novel series A Song of Fire and Ice. The show will be titled A Game of Thrones, named after the first novel in the series. Martin has planned seven books in the series, and the plan is to turn each book into a full season of television.

David Benioff (25th Hour, Troy), who is executive producing the series with D.B. Weiss (I Am Legend Prequel), says that “High fantasy has never been done on TV before and if anybody can do it, it’s HBO. They’ve taken tired genres and reinvented them — mobsters in The Sopranos and Westerns with Deadwood.” While supernatural and sci-fi have boomed in recent years, it does seem extremely odd that the fantasy genre hasn’t been tried in primetime, especially considering the huge box office and critical success of the Lord of the Rings films. The only fantasy television series that comes to mind is Xena: Princess Warrior, and that was syndicated and… uh, bad.

Sure, dragons, magic, and even swords cost money (Thrones has all three), but in the last decade sci-fi television shows have pushed the boundaries in the visual effects department. The producers claim that Thrones is more character centric, and most of the action takes place off screen - a formula that has worked well for Battlestar Galactica.

A Game of Thrones was published in 1996, nominated for 1998 Nebula Award and the 1997 World Fantasy Award, and won the 1997 Locus Award. The official plot description follows:

Long ago, in a time forgotten, a preternatural event threw the seasons out of balance. In a land where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing. The cold is returning, and in the frozen wastes to the north of Winterfell, sinister and supernatural forces are massing beyond the kingdom’s protective Wall. At the center of the conflict lie the Starks of Winterfell, a family as harsh and unyielding as the land they were born to. Sweeping from a land of brutal cold to a distant summertime kingdom of epicurean plenty, here is a tale of lords and ladies, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and bastards, who come together in a time of grim omens. Here an enigmatic band of warriors bear swords of no human metal; a tribe of fierce wildlings carry men off into madness; a cruel young dragon prince barters his sister to win back his throne; and a determined woman undertakes the most treacherous of journeys. Amid plots and counterplots, tragedy and betrayal, victory and terror, the fate of the Starks, their allies, and their enemies hangs perilously in the balance, as each endeavors to win that deadliest of conflicts: the game of thrones.

    THIS IS HUGE NEWS!

A Game of Thrones, and the sequels are such great fantasy books. It's old news that this project has been in development, and it always seemed like a perfect idea. Now that it has been green lit I couldn't be happier.
This is perfect for HBO, and could very possible become my new favorite show. I can't wait to see this.
  • It's been a while since I read the first book, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't have the dragons. And the magic in ASoIaF is so subtle as to be easy to reproduce on the small screen. All that's left to cost lots of money is swords. And good actors...
  • Jmoney
Well I've never read the books but this show better have huge ratings because HBO cancelled Rome because it was too expensive, and I'm guessing this show will be just as expensive to produce, if not more
  • jrai5
Rome was planned for only 2 seasons from the beginning.
  • jefe
Correct about 2 seasons but Deadwood and Carnivale were cancelled due to large budgets. will they do 1 or 2 books and then cancell this? he hasn't even finished the series...
  • simon2it
There are dragons in this series.
  • Dammshame
Not until the 3rd book I beleive and certainly not in the first
  • That's wrong. SPOILERS:

The dragons appear in the very last chapter of the first book.
  • Ry
You know, perhaps seasons would work better for high fantasy books rather than trying to distill them down to two hour bites. Just imagine trying to take Wheel of Time and distill the first book into Two Hours. It'd be like a rollarcoaster with less cohesion than Transformers. However television series would be more capable of handling it.
  • Ara
In response to Centipeed, the dragons aren't really featured in book 1 very much, but they come in at the very end of the story.

Also, I'm really excited to see how this will turn out. I would love to see the story come to life, but I'm not sure how well this will work because there is so much going on at once during the story line. I don't know though, it would still be cool to see someone try.
  • Tom
A week ago, I was looking forward to this series and the Legend of the Seeker (based on Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth epic). Now I'm down to Game of Thrones, because the two-hour Seeker pilot was a bastardized mess. I'm thinking HBO probably won't let me down similarly, but you never know.
  • Dammshame
Agreed - Seeker series is bastardized! But great Series Goodkind! Martin should get the same publisist as well!
  • Hunter
I was never a big fan of the books, but I still think this will be a good series, and a good fit for HBO. Now, maybe this will put a fire under George R.R. Martin's butt to finish up the series. That guy takes FOREVER!
  • Paul
This is one of my favorite book series. It is full of incredibly complex plots and subplots. I wonder if the show will keep the switching narratives or rely on a more traditional method of storytelling? Also, will the show keep all of the minor characters that really flesh out the world of the books?
  • orange cinema
jmoney brings up an excellent point about 'rome' - the costs(costumes/sets etc..) seem like they'd be similar. I think this could have potential, but I'm not really into these type of books so I'm not too excited.

Best case scenario, the show at least opens the doors to HBO & SHO doing large projects like this, but I think they best books for something like those are the Dark Tower series. Now that'd be a risk that would definately pay off.

Dark Tower or Daredevil would be sick!!!
  • pangloss
the first book wouldn't be too expensive, not anymore than the tudors at least. every book after that though will get bigger, but even if we only get one season of this i am happy. best series of books out there.
  • dammshame
Series not even finished are you are calling it the best out there?
  • pangloss
hell yeah its the best out there. feast for crows was the weakest book in the series and it is still better than 99 percent of the fantasy out there. when martin goes robert jordan on us i will revise my opinion, but until then there is no doubt.
  • Tom
Pangloss, have you read Stephen Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen series? I think it rivals Martin's Song of Ice and Fire.
  • Matt
Holy shit. This series is so incredible, and I think the best way to describe it to those who haven't read the books is to compare it to Battlestar Galactica. It's really easy to write off Battlestar Galactica because it's "sci-fi" but anyone who's watched it knows that the setting plays second fiddle to the characters and story. Likewise, Game of Thrones is an incredibly accessible "fantasy" series, although most of the fantasy aspects are more medieval. There really is next to no magic in this series. It's just a bunch of assholes backstabbing one another, which makes for good stories.
  • ilves
I read this a loong time ago, barely remember the plot anymore. But on the bright side, if any TV channel could do this right it would be HBO. The Ursula k. Quinn stories that the sci-fi channel did were horrendous... I have a little more hope for this one, but not holding my breath. I'll be pessimistic and if I'm pleasantly surprised I'll be happy.
  • Captain Awesome
    And they turned down Preacher?

    ...
  • simon2it
Of course they turned down Preacher, that project sounded horrible.
  • Meli
I'd love to see a good fantasy TV series, so this has my interest. I haven't read the books, but based on some raves above I'll have to check them out.
  • Galaxy Bird
I found these books a few years ago when an English teacher recommended them to me. I've been hooked ever since, and I was ecstatic when I first heard that HBO acquired the rights to it some time ago. I had tried to avoid getting hopeful, because we never really had any idea how long it was going to take to get this project off the ground until now.

But as of this announcement I've gone into full fan-boy mode and I cannot wait until I get to see this pilot. I really hope they are able to make all 7 books into a season each.

I wonder if each season will be named differently for the different names of the book, or if by the time it airs, it will be called A Song of Ice and Fire, rather than A Game of Thrones.
Either way, I'm looking forward to it.
  • Ender
Fantasy-wise, this series is second only to Lord of the Rings in my opinion. It's so complex, so engaging; it's wonderful news that they're making it a series.
  • yo yo ma
I think this book series is actually better than the Lord of the Rings. It may not have the same level of thought put into the history and languages, but in terms of sheer storytelling it is second to none.
  • bobbio
Fantasy-wise, Lord of the Rings is probably the fourth best fantasy series. Just because it was the first of many things doesn't mean that others didn't do the genre better, I'm serious about that. Just like the first car built was pretty crappy in comparison to some cars now, the same is true for fantasy. Of course, both the Model T and LOTR are classics.

George RR Martin is only rivaled by Steven Erikson and maybe R Scott Bakker. Both Goodkind and Jordan went downhill after a couple of books.

    R.I.P. Robert Jordan
  • Okay. I'm reading Game of Thrones right now, and so far, it is quite good. I don't usually read fantasy, save LOTR and Potter. Now. HOLY CRAP, how awesome is this idea! WHY????!!! Has it not been done yet! This is what I said, waaaay back when the first Potter movie came out, is what they should have done with that franchise! A shorter, more condensed first season (to match the sprint of that book) and then two slightly longer seasons (maybe, 8 episodes for the first season and 10 episodes for both the second and third books) and then when GoF comes around, you bump it up to a hefty 12 episode seasons until the last book. you end with a two hour finale. BAM. Harry Potter: The HBO Series. Oh god. It sounds so good. Also, could totally do it with other, similarly constructed seasons. Red Mars for HBO is going to be another show to watch...
  • Hana
This is so fucking fantastic. If you're a fantasy fan and you haven't read aSoIaF, go spend a few damn dollars, you won't regret it.
  • Dammshame
    SoFaI > SoIaF
  • Winstonsmith
without a doubt the best fantasy series... Ever... Make that one of the best series ever, of all genres. I am so glad HBO picked this up. Please go buy the book, the series is incredible. I am so happy I could die
  • Captain Rogaine
Yes, and Finally! I have never read anything like this series. I love Robert Jordan but I can also see how others can easily wander away from his writings after a while. I just have a huge connection with Matt in that series so as long as he is still around so was I.

Song of Ice and Fire though. This is like LoTR meets greek and roman mythology meets Braveheart and so much more. Things happen that blow you mind and the fact that every single character you make a connection too is at risk makes it feel so much more real. Which it doesn't even need because the characters and the things that happen already are very grounded in reality for a fantasy setting.

Pick this book up and it will truly change how you think of Fantasy books. Sadly this might mean that most every other book you pick up will not be as good. Pick these books up or be eternally sorry.

Winter is Coming! Winter is Coming! WINTER IS COMING!
  • Denny
These are great books, but has anyone realized that the series doesn't have an ending yet? He's like two books away, at least, from the end, and GRRM has been dragging his feet getting the next book out. Granted, it's going to take a LOT of TV episodes to get through the 4 books of already-published material, but isn't it going to be a lot harder for the screenwriters to figure out what to keep and what to leave out, if they don't know what's most relevant to the end of the story?
  • Panda
    AWESOMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!
  • mern
I have been waiting for this news! I fully expect HBO to nail the characters and tone of the series. Heck, if this is green lighted after the pilot, I will sign back up for HBO. The books will provide potentially endless options for each week's show. This is not a typical fantasy story where a protagonist is thrust in to a quest unwilling or unprepared only to rise and conquer. This is a series told from multiple perspectives.
I still remember being shocked while reading the first book. Gerorge R.R. Martin kills off main characters with seemingly sinister enjoyment. Even those characters you expect to be untouchable are often destroyed. It adds to the weight and intensity of the story in that those characters you have come to love or hate may only be a page turn away from death. This will be a series of weekly cliffhangers.
  • fiveongas
dude. that's awesome, man. great series, great characters, great writing. i'm anxiously awaiting 'a dance with dragons' which is the next book in the series. i recommend these books to anyone and everyone who likes a great story. throw the term 'fantasy' out the window. this is simply great writing. i'm very optomistic about hbo doing the series. if anyone can nail it, it'll be them. i'll be tivoing the entire series guarenteed. let me just stress again...dude. that's awesome, man.
  • incredible, awesome.........

I hope they decide to let George RR Martin himself get involved on some level, because he does have experience with television. The series is fantastic, great books for anyone, not simply fantasy fans. They are pretty down to earth, I think the Tudors was a great comparison.
  • Bad? It had its hokey moments at times but it was far from bad, but in any event...the very same cast and crew who worked on "Hercules the Legendary Journeys" and "Xena: Warrior Princess" did "The Lord of the Rings" film anyway.

A movie budget and a television show budget for things like special effects is hard to get around.
  • Dammshame
    Personally,

I won't watch it or ever read another GRRM novel. I am soooo tired of Aurthors dragging out series so they can pinch every little $$ out of us.

GRRM my be a great author and SoFaI and GREAT series, but he cares nothing for the readers - just another Robert Jodan sellout and he'll not get another penny out of me.......

    DS
  • Aydro
Yeah for sure this will make the greatest story [ive yet to better] become even greater,i cant even begin to tell you how excited i am to see all my favorite characters brought to life. Truely great news for GRRM, congrats dude...however i am going to have to agree with Denny, every time i finish anouther novel i check GRRM's update" on "ADWD" and am bitterly dissapointed to find that nothing has changed. :[ .Come on George you can do it !!! Weve been waiting for years, now put down everything else youre doing and finish what you started...... NOW!

I'm hoping they'll cast Peter Dinklage as Tyrion. I better not even HEAR any talk about casting Warwick Davis. Is he the go to midget or something? I think I'd rather watch two hours of Jar Jar Binks that see him in another movie.
  • MuffinMan
Peter Dinklage ftw. Tyrion is my favorite character in aSoIaF, and I would trust Peter Dinklage with my life to carry out this role brilliantly.
Portia De Rossi as Cersei? Anyone?
One concern I do have, however, is the kid actors are going to age way faster than the pace of the books! I don't think anyone wants to see a 20 year old playing Rickon Stark.
  • snow
    that book is cool
