Argghh! The Sounds of Twilight top Billboard

As if we didn’t already expect this was going to happen… The soundtrack to Twilight made its debut at #1 on Billboard’s Top 200, beating out AC/DC. With Juno and Mamma Mia, this is the third soundtrack to hit #1 on the album charts this year. 29% of the sales were digital downloads. [THR]

What is the deal with this movie? Judging by the trailers and the plot synopsis, it looks terrible. So why the big fuss? Are teenage girls really that starved for entertainment? I don't get it. I'm trying to understand, but maybe being male, I am simply incapable of understanding.
  • Tyler J.
    Wow.

Twilight mania is encompassing all aspects of our entertainment culture.

It's amazing how such a low quality product can hit a sweet spot of fanatics in the market and do so well. It's a true shame that good products are neglected by the masses, but drivel like this hits it big.
  • Leticia
Beating out AC/DC? Brainless people seem to grow faster...
  • the movie looks so freakin BAD.
  • Teenage girls are insane with hormones and fantasies.

What I don't get is what exactly makes them vampires. They can walk in the daylight, and apparently they don't have fangs and don't drink blood.
  • rcblinker
I'm not going to lie, the soundtrack has some good songs but the Twilight name is the only reason it's so high up on the charts.
  • Jack M.
The amount of moaning this movie brings to the internet makes me smile.
  • starscream9289
Well at least it wasn't HSM or some Hannah Montana shit.
  • Allynd Dudnikov
Anyone notice the main trailer theme is an exactly copy of Starship Troopers by YES only with the Metal Gear Solid "The Best is yet to Come" opening?
  • Joe
Goddamn it. I am ready to puke at all this fucking Twilight business.

Why the fuck is Supermassive Black Hole on a fucking vampire movie soundtrack? Muse is a fucking alt-rock, nearly prog-rock, band, but apparently teenage girls are snapping them up left and right.

Paramore, Linkin Park, Perry Farrell (what?)... oh wait it only moved 165k copies, which is incredibly weak compared to some recent numbers (AC/DC moved 700k, Coldplay moved 733k, Kanye's last one and Lil' Wayne's last one each moved a million plus).

Oh, and all the fans on Amazon hate it, saying it's nowhere near what they envisioned. Still predicting the biggest 2nd weekend dropoff in history at the movie theaters. It'll be more front-loaded than Cloverfield.
  • Meli
LoL, Peter why do you continue to frustrate yourself by posting Twilight news? At least after next weekend it'll all be over.... well, sort of.

I'll be glad after next week's opening, so some of the overload of marketing can stop.

The soundtrack has some good songs if you're into the bands on the CD.
  • Troy
    Is the bad dream over!!
  • Meli
@Joe - Muse is the author's favorite band and said that she often listened to them (among others) while she wrote the novel. It was inevitable that one of their songs would be on the soundtrack. Just because teen girls might like fluffy fiction doesn't mean they're completely devoid of musical taste.
  • Em
crazy stuff, not surprised though. any one seen the film yet or just goin to skip out?

well i'm glad the cd has some good indie artists, but def not a fan of the bigger bands, no thanks paramore
  • Trebek
I don't understand what the big deal with this movie is? It looks like crap to me...But that's me.

And whoever is surprised about it beating out the new AC/DC...Don't be surprised. Their new album isn't all that great. It's just more of the same.
  • John
It's a good soundtrack with some good songs, but I can understand the response Twilight is generating on here, since the readers of this blog are unbearably narrow minded thirtysomethings with little in the way of appreciation, just because it's a fucking vampire movie with a cult following, albeit a rather pretentious, estrogen-fueled one.
  • Joe
Her "playlists" just list music she kinda likes, and fans treat them like gospel.
  • Meli
Most of her fans are teenage girls, so of course they treat it like gospel. There is always something popular for a hormonal teenage girl to be obsessive over. It's part of growing up. Now for those crazy mom types who are obsessing like teenage girls, screaming and stalking, it is down right frightening.
  • Rosario
Sorry StarBlazer101, but the High School Musical one was #2 so yeah, its not that far behind, And Miley Cyrus (dont ask me how this happened) deputed #1 almost selling more then Mariah Carey. Tell me thats not crazy.

So Peter, when can we expect your write up of how the midnight screening was.
  • Harry Lime
Thus Robert Pattinson launches his incredibly successful career as an acoustic singer-songwriter...
  • You know I hate to say it... but the soundtrack is actually really good! I may not like the movie, but there's some great songs on it. Carter Burwell's score is also great... So this news isn't that bad... :)
  • MrMad2001
I bought six copies, and ordered tickets for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Oh and I was purposely turned by a vamp for this special occasion.
  • Allynd Dudnikov
Everyone! I propose a massive MST3K-style riffing in theatres! Let us go and enjoy ourselves while the twilight tots (from here-in called TWots) shit bricks!
  • G
I still can't believe an album as bad as Juno hit #1 with anything but the "top worst" list.
  • evanz
Folks, the thing that is shocking is not that it hit #1. It's that it hit #1 *before* the movie is even out. You have to go back to 8 Mile for the last time this happened - and that was when Eminem was arguably at his prime.
  • Melissa
@ John "but I can understand the response Twilight is generating on here, since the readers of this blog are unbearably narrow minded thirtysomethings with little in the way of appreciation, just because it’s a fucking vampire movie with a cult following, albeit a rather pretentious, estrogen-fueled one."

Haha I couldn't believe you said this... brave person! I feel like the people on this site are incredibly aggressive when it comes to Twilight, and your post made me smile...

But to everyone else: No need to go on rampages yelling "fucking this, and fucking that." I mean, aren't the Twilight fans supposed to be the fans that you say post stuff like that??

I actually think the CD looks pretty good and I'm excited they are using more lesser known music and avoiding (well for the most part) the top 40s, everyones heard these songs before, crap that most soundtracks use. Maybe it will open young fans up to some new types of music??

I have yet to buy the cd but have listened to most of it online and I think (besides the Paramore song that all the young fans seem to like) its really a great cd.
  • Lorelei
Wow! I can't believe how... aggressive (I think that was the word I liked in one of the prior posts) people are about this book/movie. I'm a fan of the books and can't wait to see how the movie is adapted. And as a 30 year old woman, with a husband, a mortagage and a full time job, I can relate with the shame of liking something that only 14 year old emos/goths should enjoy.

But you know, what? I like the story Stephenie Meyer created. And if you can get past the vampire-thing (it is a fantasy book, after all) the themes of being a teenager are there and perhaps that's where the connection lies. Finding first love, how consuming it could be, not relating to anyone, parents, ect... Now if you've forgotten all those things then I could see how the exposure could be frightening, but the answer is simple... Just don't go to the movie. I'm sure it'll do fine without your patronage. Stop the hate. Use nice words.

Do any of the posters find True Blood on HBO as offensive? Just wondering if it's the vampire thing or if it's the teeny-bopper thing that's so repulsive.
  • Ax17
    Cool! Go Twilight!
  • Becca
Hm, have you read the book? It's more than hormones and fantasis. The story is a beautiful one and one that almost any girl can relate to. The story is such a powerful one that you can actually feel the characters' joy and pain. It's a feel good book, a happy ending that gives you hope...because I don't think a relationship can get much worse than having your boyfriend feel the urge to kill you every minute you are together. If they can make it work (even if it is a fictional story) it gives you hope that you and your significant other can make it work, it gives you hope that there is someone out there somewhere.
  • Becca
Secondly, yes, walking in the daylight doesn't harm them, not directly anyway. When they step into the sunlight, their skin glistens (as if studded with diamonds). If humans see this, and thus discovering their existence, the "vampire police" must destroy them...so it's not really a good idea to go out in sunlight. No, they don't have fangs the way you think of them, but this is to protect their identity...their teeth are remarkably strong and sharp though. And yes...they do drink blood...human blood even. They are supposed to drink Human blood, thats what makes them strong and most vampires do follow this unspoken rule. The Cullens in Twilight are the "freaks" of the vampire wall (they call themselves "vegetarians") since they only drink animal blood, in attempts to protect human life...none of them chose the life they live....they were all turned into vampires to save themselves from and unfortunate event.
  • Jessica
okay i don't get the "paramore song" hate. i atually like paramore..both songs. i went 2 see them in concert and they were the shizz! and yes i'm 18 but a crazed screaming teenage fan girl i'm not. i don't go insane for ppl who don't kn ow my name. i also like twilight.
