The Dark Knight is nearing the $1 billion dollar mark, with a grand total of $997,535,317 in box office receipts (as of Monday morning). The film has made $528,535,317 domestically (just $72,252,871 below Titanic’ record) and $469,000,000 overseas. Warner Bros is planning a big rerelease of the film in January, and I’m wondering just how much the film might be able to claim during this reprieve.

Warner Bros has released Christopher and Jonah Nolan’s screenplay online for Awards Consideration. You can download it for free on WarnerBros.com. Thanks to RopesofSilicon for the tip.

I think it will barely reach the $1 billion mark before it leaves theaters this year. When it is re-released come January, it should add some more to that, but I'm just happy with its success, because it wholeheartedly deserves it.
  • ghghfhj
If you watch this film more than 4 times it begins to get dull and the plot unravels bigtime. I guess hysteria played a big part in this film being a success.
  • Marty J
I'll have it on DVD by January so I see no need to watch it again in theaters.

And the more I think about it, the more I agree with what Paul Morley said on Newsnight Review: "Take away Heath Ledger and you're left with a very mediocre film".
  • simon2it
ghghfhj, then don't watch it four times...

    @ Marty J

Yeah but the same would apply to Jaws if you were to take away the shark. It's a nonsensical criticism.

The same could also be said of Titanic if you took away the iceberg. Actually, the same would be true of Titanic if you included MORE icebergs. Bad example there.
  • nadanuff
If you take away Heath Ledger it wouldn't be The Dark Knight. He IS a part of the movie. Why are people talking about what a movie might (or might not) have been instead of WHAT IT IS.

    Idiotic criticism.

Ya know guys... take away the film and this website really becomes pretty mediocre...

That would hold true if Marty was talking about the JOKER. He was mentioning HEATH LEDGER, the actor behind the villain.

But, hey, who are we to argue, this film nailed it.

Wow...why complain when A.) YOu don't have to read this article and B.) The news on Dark Knight has slowed down (obviously).
  • TheMarquis
Take away the mask/knife combo and Scream becomes a really mediocre movie. Just a dude running around screaming "boo" and tilting his head.
  • emily
TDK is still in theaters near me. I didn't see it on IMAX so I'd definitely see it again in January.
  • kevin
    Confirmed: Havery Dent is DEAD
  • slaphappyslim
take away the pointy ears and you've got....... a guy wearing a mask without pointy ears.......

but seriously, you've got to love contrarians: must attempt to appear superior to others at all costs. my favorite was a guy who said anyone who liked TDK must have no imagination. I refrained from telling him all the things I could imagine about his mom.....
  • is there stuff in the screenplay that didn't make it into the final version of the film?

"If you watch this film more than 4 times it begins to get dull and the plot unravels bigtime."

I've seen it 6 times in theatres and it never slowed down for me. I ended up always finding something I loved that I missed before.

I am SO getting this one

god I barely managed to stay awake during while watching the film why on earth would anyone want to read it?

I can just imagine how ridiculous this script must be:

Ext. Day, bank: Batman walks in from apparently nowhere, and speaks in a voice which begs for about twenty dozen Ricolas...

Batman: How lame is it that you are right now imagining my gruff voice in your head as you read this?

    Gordon: Wha?

Batman: Nothing. What happened in here?

Gordon: Eh, mob bank knocked over by Joker thugs.

    Batman: Joker... "thugs", you say?

Gordon: Yes, Joker thugs. The Joker's thugs?

Batman: Thugs are oft intimidated and easy frightened.

    Gordon: Um, okay.

    Batman: And "Joker" thugs...

... Batman turns head swiftly to camera thanks to aid of new unconnected cowl thingy...

Batman: ...doubly so, Commissioner. Doubly. So.

    @ Captain Awesome

'S all good. I was just suspecting good fun.

Sorry to hear about the name-hijack. There should really be a registration measure on here.

Huh. I would of thought there was an updated draft specifically tied to the film's theatrical cut, but in this new pdf they left the same stuff that wasn't filmed in the script. I know scripts can change even on set, and I'm glad we still get to see what changed, but whatever.

Actually, box office mojo screwed up- the foreign numbers were 3 million off. (They said 469, but now its around 466) The worldwide total as of 11/25/08 are roughly 995.7 million. Not out of the woods quite yet.................
