Last year there was a crazy rumor began to circulate that Will Smith’s son Jaden Smith would star in a remake of The Karate Kid, with Stephen Chow attached to direct and take over the role of Mr. Myiagi.

Sounded horrible then. Still sounds horrible now. And it turns out the crazy rumor wasn’t so crazy.

Variety confirms that Jaden will star in a “refashioned” remake of the 1980’s classic. It gets worse, the film will be set in an exotic locale, with a shoot planned for next year in Beijing. Chris Murphy’s screenplay is said to “borrow elements” from the original film, and is not a strict remake.

Jaden, an avid practitioner of karate, made his big screen debut as Will Smith’s son (big stretch) in Pursuit of Happyness. He can be seen next in The Day the Earth Stood Still. No word on if Stephen Chow will be involved, although I’d expect he might be too busy on The Green Hornet.

At least it can't be worse than Not Another Not Another Movie.
  • um, worst remake idea ever.

LMFAO... see this is exactly what I was talking about in the Oldboy remake post. You really just have to start laughing at some point...

^ starting to agree with you man.

wasn't this a rumor like a year ago, I know my friend told me Jaden Smith was the new karate kid, with Will Smith directing.

never back down doesn't seem so bad now huh lol

I still don't understand the logic behind people who claim it "ruins my childhood movie." No matter how atrocious, or even how good, the remake is, it doesn't change the movie I watch when I pop in my original Karate Kid DVD. Nor does it magically travel through time and alter the good times I had with it as a kid, hence changing my memories of it. Ultimately it has no bearing on the original or my enjoyment of it whatsoever.

Wow I'm not one to hate a child actor but this kid is very annoying...someone remind me why he appears in The Day The Earth Stood Still...oh yeah, Will Smith is putting him in movies....like a kid his age really wants to be working in films...lol.. I understand why kids get into because it's the parents idea...does Will Smith really need to have his children in movies also, even more so at their age...they should be playing with other kids and having a regular life.....Danny Bonaduce is just one of the many examples of how child actors can turn out...even with privilege Jaden could end up with issues...

Now remaking the Karate Kid is just horrible...like the idea of remaking Goonies, Gremlins or Fast Times At Ridgemount High....I understand rummaging through comic book and anime properties because of lack of original script ideas...but this is a new low....it's an 80's classic, I think the key word is 80's....and Jaden is way too young to be beating up Cobra Ki and driving lessons...Smith seems to think because he's one of the richest actors he can force feed his son into Hollywood...that's going to work for awhile until studios get fed up with loosing money...on the other hand Jaden Smith in a 3 Ninjas remake could work...

Tyler James Williams would be a better choice if the project had to happen...
  • Agree with dopiestghost

The only thing to really be angry about is the amount of effort and money that could be used for something so much more interesting
  • dopiestghost: bad sequel, and bad remakes hurt a films legacy. This is proven.
  • are you fucking me wow
  • "At least it can’t be worse than Not Another Not Another Movie."

Do not tempt fate, my friend. Just wait until we get the "Karate Kid II Spoof" movie starring Jaden Smith as "The Fresh Prince of Okinawa". On second thought, even that couldn't be much worse than this crap.

@dopiestghost: I totally agree. They can remake Citizen Kane for all I care (and I wouldn't be surprised at this point). I would just laugh.

@Peter: Only to people who are so canonically (is that a word?) minded that they can't bring themselves to ignore them.
  • YouKnow: Nope, The Jurassic Park sequels have hurt the legacy of the franchise, The Scream sequels ruined the legacy of Scream, the Star Wars prequels ruined the legacy of Star Wars. Sure, the original film will always be there for us, but the film's legacy is important. In fact, the Karate Kid sequels have already ruined the legacy of the original film. Did you know that Pat Morita was nominated for an Oscar for the original KArate Kid? It was an incredible performance. Most people think of Mr. Miyagi as a cliche now because of the sequels.

I'd say that, if anything, a terrible remake makes the original film seem even better in contrast.
  • jank
honestly, i think what annoys us are the titles they use. if they would just call it something else, it would be fine. it would be a rip off, yeah, but it would have been unoriginal anyway so who cares? some people are so passionate about film and hold certain titles near and dear to their hearts. they're sacred. and it's the title that is associated to those films that resonate through the years.

it's like a hardcore christian just finding out that the writer for the twilight series is re-writing the bible. yeah it doesn't change any of the older versions written but still that they called it the "bible" is where the frustration lies and uproar begins. so yeah, i can understand.
some things people just cherish too much and those things should not be re-visited.

bottom line: with all these remakes, hollywood has lost most of its originality. and that's what we should really be angry about most.

your wrong ,it's different with a religion is a belief and a movie is just a movie anybody who holds a movie so close to their hearts and it's sacred and they remake it and they get mad or sad they are just a lame who already lost

A movie's legacy IS important. It is the reason why, even though it came out like 30 years ago, a movie lives on from one generation to another. Just take Indy 4 for example, Aliens? Gophers? Shia swinging from trees with monkeys? Is that the Indy we grew up with? NO! But that is the Indy that this generation is gonna grow up with. That is the Indy that my 8 year old brother is gonna grow up with. Just like most of the late 90s generation grew up with Schumacher's Batman movies. Those movies ruined the God-like image that many Bat-fans, including myself, had worshiped for years. I mean, Bat nipples? Bat credit cards? Schumacher ruined a legacy that Burton's movies had created. Singer's Superman is another example of how one bad sequel or "Re-imagining" can destroy the legacy of what was already one of the most influential film franchises of all time. And he also ruined X-Men, by the way. So you see, we can't allow these directors to keep ruining the films that we all grew up with. Those movies have had a greater impact in our lives than any religion or person in this world. We helped build those movies' legacies and by supporting crap like this we are also helping to ruin it. So please, say NO to a Karate Kid re-make.
  • jank
a movie is just a movie? that's you argument?
i can tell you film has had more of an impact- more of a significance, than religion ever has to a lot of people.
and those people, believe it or not, will choose to see a movie early sunday morning over going to church.
but let's not get into that. like i said, it all depends on the person and what they cherish most.
  • Anthroman78
hmm lets see the "...screenplay is said to “borrow elements” from the original film, and is not a strict remake."

I believe they did that already, it was call Never Back Down and it sucked. Do we really need to do that again, except this time tarnish the original Karate Kid in the process?
  • skimasksoldier
jank i don't give a fuck i don't go to church on sundays or any other day of the year but religion is more impacting then a movie and it's not even some amazing movie it's fucking karate kid but i don't care i just said what i said i didn't make an argument i just said what i thought.

Why have in Bejing when Karate is a Japanese martial arts?

I mean, it's like me wanting a movie about the Mexican Revolution that takes place in Cuba.

God, the original movie was great. screw the remake.

remake of the last dragon would make more sense.
  • marz

@Peter: It doesn't do any good to worry about what the general public thinks of our favorite film/character/franchise, or how future generations are going to look at it. That's really the whole reason why people get so upset about these crappy remakes and sequels. We want everyone else, especially kids growing up today, to have the same respect and warm feelings about our favorite films as we do. If their experience of the film gets sullied in any way by seeing a bad remake first, or worse, never seeing the original at all, or if their perception of a franchise is watered down by bad sequels, it bothers us. Worrying about a film's "legacy" boils down to just caring too much about other people's experiences.

Think about it... what kind of people do you think will actually go see this film? Then ask yourself if you *really* care that much what those people think of the Karate Kid franchise. I certainly don't.

Any film buff who has any respect for the original is simply going to ignore it. And any kid nowadays in the age of the internet who even skims film news sites at all is going to know that this is a remake, and if they're at all a "film person," they're going to want to see the original instead, or at least first. I know I do when I see something come out now that I find out is a remake of an older film.

I'm a firm believer that future film history books are goign to look at this period as the "bad remake/sequel" period where Hollywood literally ran out of ideas and started to cannibalize itself. And the future generation will probably ignore most of them as a result. And if they don't, who cares? They aren't goign to appreciate the originals as much as us anyway. They didn't grow up with them.

I think that its a shame that all the movies from my childhood are being remade. Mostly because they were original films that I would watch over and over again because they were so great and new. Most people will probably say the movie is to introduce the characters we loved to a new generation. Thats not needed. The new generation needs new characters, not the ones we loved made "modern". If only hollywood would care about artistic integrity and not money.
  • optimusprime
    waste of time
  • Getoverit
If this makes you angry...get over it. People act like these remakes stomp into your homes and burn the original movie's DVD. If you care that much about the Karate Kid(...really?) don't watch the new one. Its a simple solution. Do I agree with the influx of remakes? No. Does it ruin my day, let alone entire childhood? No.
  • filmkid
i agree Tyler James Williams would be a better choice
  • Oi Vey
    @ Getoverit

I think it's the principle of it all, and how Hollywood is really getting desperate here. Then they're going to remake 90s movies, and so forth.

What really irks me is that the movie is taking place in Bejing. China. Karate is Japanese. To normal people, it doesn't matter. But it matters to me because the whole "Asians look the same" mentality has never left Hollywood for some odd reason, and they have all the wealth and power in the world. They have interns to do hours and hours of research for them. Are they that ignorant?
  • Mikey M
    Oh god. Why?

    Remake overload....
  • mudywaters
It's hard not to like Big Willy, but he sucks as an actor. If there aren't any special, Big Willy style isn't all in it. Now, because he makes a ton of money, he thinks he can do whatever he wants. I'm not even criticizing his success. A lot of people like his movies, but I'm not one of them. Don't remake "classics" (I'll put the Karate Kid under classic cheeseyness), but it's still a good/fun movie.

They better make a part II and call it Karate Kid 2 Da Streetz. But in seriousness I told my wife about this and she is NOT a film geek and she was totally against it and asked why.
  • Justin
im not gonna lie the kid is gifted he def can act, but come on there are certain movies that you just dont remake and the Karate Kid is def one of them, i think this is one of the stupidest ideas theyve come up with

    Karate Kid remake? EPIC FAIL.
  • Nate
It can't be a "Karate Kid" Remake if they're practicing Kung-Fu. And Jackie Chan would so not make a good Miyagi.
He basically took ideas from The Karate Kid and was like "Hey son, lets totally butcher my favorite movie only make it The Kung-Fu Kid."
"But wont it be the same movie only differently titled?"
"No, were just going to include the elements of bonzai trees, the scene with the fly, the car washing, fence painting scenes and some other stuff associated with it. And its gonna be in China!"
"But I dont speak Chinese! And neither does the character."
"Well we'll have the replacement Mr. Miyagi teach you that too, and then the whole movie will be in Chinese!"
This was such a bad idea, I swear.
And Jaden's not even a teenager yet, is he? So its all gonna have little kids in it. Yeah. That's WAY better.
  • Glenn Huber
i think its a big mistke, leave well enough alone. some remakes come out good(ie:halloween by rob zombie) but no good can come of this! dont ruin a childhood classic!
  • gfg
It's funny - I am watching The Day the Earth Stood Still and I was thinking this kid is the worst actor ever. I looked him up and saw this crap. It's sad.
