Worst Idea Ever: Spoofing the Spoof Movie Genre

It was bound to happen eventually. We’ve had spoof movies about horror movies, teen movies, sports movies, disaster movies, epic movies, and now finally Hollywood is making a spoof of the spoof movie genre in David Murphy’s Not Another Not Another Movie.

When a studio head (Chevy Chase) quits his job at a successful Hollywood movie studio, he is replaced by his ex-con brother Michael Madsen and their “equally inept gangster friend” (Vinnie Jones). David Leo Schultz plays a production assistant who is assigned to direct a spoof of the spoof movie genre, and Burt Reynolds plays an actor who is cast as the director of the movie within the movie. Confused? That’s only the beginning.

The film features a hand full of cameos from c-list actors playing themselves spoofing their “memorable” film roles. The list includes the guy who played the villain in Kindergarten Cop and the young African-American Marine on trial in A Few Good Men. Former Howard Stern lackey turned Tonight Show announcer “Stuttering” John Melendez also has a supporting role. Is there anyone outside of the people involved in the production that honestly believe this movie is a good idea?

ugh. yeah it was bound to happen, still makes it the WORST IDEA EVER. it really annoys me that there are lots of talented directors out there that won't get the opportunity to make their movies because Hollywood insists on giving funding to these fucking atrocious disasters.
I also heard some other really terrible news: apparently Beyonce wants to play Wonder Woman. Now THAT would be a disaster.
  • Jef Costello
I'd rather see a mockumentary style making of a spoof movie, from the writers being lazy and trying to spoof the most recent movies possible, and having their worlds crash down on them when the movie opens and it bombs.
  • MrMad2001
Clark Griswold? I will probably netflix it. I mean who doesn't have fond memories of the guy?
  • spikeswift
...and this years Razzie goes to.... this movie.
Seriously, i will wait an extra year and watch the remake. *slams head against keyboard*
  • I think a better question ask at the end of the post is whether anyone inside the production thinks its a good idea.
  • Nicholas Boyd
    C'mon Chevy.
  • Water
Reminds me of the fake trailer Maddox made for an April Fool's Day joke earlier this year (called "Vague Genre Movie"). I doubt it will be much different than what eventually gets made.
  • TheMarquis
    *audible facepalm*

Has it really come to this?
  • Marko
Agree with Jef. A concept like this could almost work if it was in the right hands. Like if Christopher Guest was the one helming the project.

But I don't really see much coming out of this one. Probably a direct to DVD film. Though on the plus side at least it isn't Setzer and Friedberg directing it.
  • Cody
    this... is... terrible
  • Emerson
If it makes more money than every other spoof movie put together, yes. If not, no.
  • cptcucumber
I saw this first on Movieset a few weeks ago.... They have a bunch of behind the scenes stuff.

    http://not-another-not-another-movie.movieset.c...

    Looks pretty dumb
  • Drake Whalterson
    I’ll see it.
  • Damn, they stole my joke of an idea. I'm sure that in a few years we'll see a Not Another Not Another Not Another Movie. A Spoof on Spoofs of Spoof movies movie.
  • Marvin
You know, the description isn't a bad idea if done right. However, it won't be, so yes it will be horrible
  • ghostbuster$
netflix it... that phrase is so not happening
  • Joe Newman
Well I kinda like the idea I heard about it awhile ago while looking up if Chevy was still active. I think its good just so people can realize that those Movie Movies are fucking awful and need to stop making #1 in the box office. I'll reserve judgment until either a trailer or if I see it.

IMDB Summarizes it as "In this non- stop hilarious ride we follow a struggling Movie Studio that is willing to do anything to make a buck even if it means ruining its reputation, and running the Movie Industry into the ground. This film has everything that an audience wants from a LAUGH OUT LOUD COMEDY by taking a no-holds barred attack on the Spoof Genre from Blockbuster Action movies to Dramas and Documentaries to Popular Television shows. "

"Non Stop Hilarious Ride" is probably the funniest terminology I've ever heard but not if it is serious
  • cib3k
That's definitely not the worst idea ever - it's actually an interesting one which if done right might actually work. And the problem with Hollywood is usually the execution, not the idea.
  • Max
Spoofing comedies is something that never fully made sense to me anyway. The whole idea of looking at things in a humorous manner sort of loses its punch when the subject matter is humorous to begin with.
  • Jud
I'm sure there's plenty of people within the production that honestly believe this is a bad idea.
  • Joe Newman
Max: hahaha but those movies AREN'T humorous
  • fanboy d
you never know, could be a masterpiece, like 81/2 or le mepris...
  • Harrison and Steve
BOWFINGER iS THE KING OF THIS KIND OF plotline.

"the big picture" "the player" and "tropic thunder" are good as well.

michael madsen was funny in scarymovie4 but i dont see it here.. make steven seagal the studio boss.

MAKE CHEVY CHASE a writer/DIRECTOR and get some other loser type guy to play his asst writer director.

    "spoof movie" needs to hammer:
    -- writer/director duos
-- the competing other legendary spoof team (ex. Zucker Bros.)
-- the friedberg seltzer team that ruined the genre
-- vapid sextapewhores who think theyre actresses
-- the serious actor who needs work (ex. crispin glover)

-- the movie is filmed in one week

-- writers on the set changing/inserting worse jokes and asides/bizarre non sequiturs on the fly, while an UNamused, far intelligent crew/staff/extras winces on

but i dont see how a spoof of a spoof is going to be funny. thats hard to do if the movie within the movie is intentionally unfunny.
  • Philsauce
    that's like dividing by zero
  • Harrison and Steve
    oh shyt.

steve martin and chevy chase as the directors.

    now there youve got something.
  • Oscar
God dammit. I always thought that some day somebody would do a funny comedy about the spoof movie genre where they really skewer the people who make the movies and the people who watch them. Instead we have this ridiculously convoluted piece of crap that is trying to hard to be meta.
  • Whatever happened to the good spoofs, like Mel Brooks films? I just wish that Hollywood would force these movies to be straight-to-DVD.
  • The title is stupid, but the idea is solid. You guys are wayyyyy too cynical. You don't even recognize that this film is ripping on the same shit we are. This isn't another flick from the Date Movie/Epic Movie guys that's called "Spoof Movie", it's a satire of that whole world coming from an outside source.

Give the insta-hate a rest and at least look at the whole picture before you start writing your hate mail.
  • Captain Awesome
I'll be over here enjoying Mel Brooks work instead.
  • theuglyspirit
I'll be somewhere nearby Captain Awesome watching History of the World Part 1.

Effective and funny satire as attempted by Hollywood has been dead for many years.
  • Josh
I still think Mel Brooks is the only person who should be allowed to make spoofs.
  • Beefy
This is one of the genres, like zombie movies, that needs to rest for a little while. We need new ideas. I'll just curl up over here with Top Secret and Airplane 'til this is all over. Blazing Saddles can come too.
  • Joe Newman
comparing Mel Brooks movies to the Movies after Scary Movie I is not even fair since all they are bad reference jogging.
  • /m
    what is wrong with Hollywood...
where did all the brilliant writers goes?
  • Rik
LOL. Some comics writer named Kris Straub (which is not me, by the way) came up with this a few weeks ago :-)

    http://chainsawsuit.com/20080826.shtml

and now we're at it, he also did a genius batman comic :-)

    http://chainsawsuit.com/20080917.shtml
  • I'm not suprise, when you have made fun of everything the
last thing to do is really kill-it at the box office!
  • edog
If it puts a nail in the coffin of all the crap "spoofs" we've had in the past several years, I'm all for it.
  • Slipstream
I have a weird thing for Burt Reynolds, I mean I even just got him as the voice on my GPS. I got it from www.navtones.com that does celebrity voices for GPS. I love it! I also got Mr. T and Kim Cattrall but for some reason I keep going back to Burt!
  • Trevor
Umm Guys, I am inclined to believe this is a hoax. At least I hope to GOD it's a hoax
