Star Trek Trailer Description

Paramount was supposedly howing off the new trailer for JJ Abrams’ Star Trek on a 15 minute loop on the lot on Friday. Here is a brief decryption of what you will see:

  • A 60’s style corvette convertible tears down the road, a policeman in hot pursuit.
  • The driver, a 13-year-old boy, leaps from the car right as it goes off a cliff.
  • Reveal: the policeman has a hover bike
  • The Policeman asks “Who are you? What’s Your Name?” The boy answers “James Tiberius Kirk!”
  • Kirk years later, a young man (Chris Pine) is riding a hover bike
  • Voice Over: “You never found yourself here, you never really fit in. What you choose to do with you’re life is up to you.
  • Young kirk stares at a huge futuristic structure, possibly Star Fleet headquarters or the factory where the Enterprise is being constructed
  • Maybe you were meant for something different, something… bigger.”
  • Shots of Spock as a baby, toddler, and then a 20-something-year-old Spock yelling at Kirk
  • Quick cuts of spaceships and lots of other fun stuff

You can read the full description over at AICN. It doesn’t sound exactly what I was expecting, especially the beginning sequence. The trailer will likely be attached to Quantum of Solace when it hits American theaters on  November 14th 2008.

Ah, so excited for this moive!
  • J
i'm apprehensive to the truth of this description. i'm excited anyway.
  • J
nevermind the descriptions at AICN sound pretty legit. sounds great. there's some goood trailers in front of QoS. i'm just as excited for watchmen/star trek as i am for the movie.

    WTF?

Spock had served on the Enterprise for 11 years under Captain Christopher Pike before James Kirk even took over as commanding officer. How can a "20-something-year-old Spock" be yelling at Kirk? Wasn't he supposedly something like 60+ years older than Kirk?

Maybe it doesn't matter to most people but they've already fucked up the time-line on this 'MTV gang flies around in a super-duper Apple store craptacular adventure', which Abrams has stated "is not for Star Trek fans".

Who the hell does he think wants to watch Star Trek in the first place? Is this really going to be the movie to bridge the gap between the brainless MTV generation and Star Trek fans?

If they fuck with canon and piss off the fan-base just get get asses in seats, it just self-sabotaging their ticket sales (which is what's really important) while taking a shit on the franchise. Now that some info has been revealed about what they are doing to this pic, most people I've talked to have no interest whatsoever in seeing this WB style '30-somethings playing 20-somethings' MTV garbage.

Good, don't see it. No one is forcing you to. I for one, and many others I suppose are looking forward to this change upon the franchise. It's a drastic change, but needed imho. In todays world, the people that grew up watching Star Trek are the minority now. Break the rules every once and a while I say.

"How can a “20-something-year-old Spock” be yelling at Kirk?"
I believe they are at Starfleet Academy when this happens. "SPOILER ALERT:" Spock and Kirk do not get along in the beginning of the film. And over the course of the film they develop there friendship that we all know and love from TOS.

NEWSFLASH: They are making this for EVERYONE. Not just the fanbase. Star Trek is DEAD. Enterprise and Star Trek: Nemesis saw to that. This is trying to revive and get people who have maybe never even seen Star Trek before into the theater. This is going to appeal to a much larger and younger crowd than ever before and well it should. Wait until the movie is released before getting crazy.
  • krackajap
    since when do Vulcans yell?
  • I read the two descriptions at AICN and one of the things that stood out for me was that there was NO description or even mention of the Enterprise. I thought that was going to be a big deal in this trailer.

I guess we'll all find out on Friday.

sounds awesome but I thought Kirk rode Horses ;) thats the big cannon fuck up

btw Im sure this will be awesome mostly because there is no way in hell it could be worse than DS9 or some of the movies after First Contact
  • Aaron
    Kinda sounds like Muppet Babies.

    hahaha what?

    @ Pentarix

    take a chill pill
  • Can we see a damn trailer already? I'm so sick of speculation.

    This movie better be good.
  • orgcaptainnemo
@ Pentarix, I'm going to own you so please read this carefully.

The reviewer said 20 year old Spock, because he LOOKS like he's in his 20s. If you knew anything about Trek you'd know Vulcans live much longer than humans, so while he may appear 20 he could be 100. The guy who saw the trailer probably didn't know this.

Abrams said "Ultimately, though, I wasn’t making this movie just for the dedicated fans. I was making the movie for fans of movies." He says *just*, that doesn't exclude Star Trek fans. For this movie to be successful and for there to be more of them it needs to appeal to more than just the core Trek audience.

If you think it's "MTV like" just because it has younger actors in it, well, that's certainly your opinion and you are welcome to it. But it's pretty narrow minded and silly. How can you call it "craptacular" when there hasn't been ANY actual footage from the movie released? Answer me that.

Finally, if you're some pissed off fanboy (which you appear to be) and are afraid they might change a bit of canon I hope you hate on all the movies and episodes that do the same. When you have a universe this big with as much material as is present you're going to have to change things occasionally to make for a good story. They can't change anything major or people will notice, but little things are fine, I think.

Everyone I know who has seen the pics and the teaser have thought it looks interesting, at the worst, and awesome at best.

    Batman Begins
    canon change (slightly...)
equals no epic fail, instead epic win!
  • Lance Y.
And The Dark Knight. And Casino Royale. Thinking canon change fuxx0rs everything things up is as intelligent as a blank peice of cardboard.
  • Joe Newman
To be fair Batman Begins/Dark Knight and Casino Royale are not really "cannon changes".

The new Batman film series is more of setting up its own cannon and has nothing really to do with the universe of the other movies or comics

Casino Royale is also a restart and obviously cannot take place in the classic Bondverse and is not just a traditional prequel.

A more apt example would be the Star Wars prequels. Like the addition of Qui-Gon as Obi-Wan's original teacher instead of it simply being Yoda. Although then again comparison to those is probably not something Trekkies want to hear.
  • feed me a stray cat
    "since when do vulcans yell?"

zachary quinto does not have to raise his voice to "yell" at you.. he can do much worse than that.
  • cogezek
    your name...is jim.
  • Lars
The appeal to the original Star Trek was always William Shatner. I don't think ANY actor could live up to his deliciously arrogant interpretation of Kirk. Do I really want to see these kids playing Trek?
  • Mikey M
A hover bike? A hover board? What?
  • This will suck more than anything has sucked before.
  • Pentarix
    @ Logan

Good point, but why is it necessary to remake this? It's a huge universe and in this day of remakes, this rings as tacky.

    @ orgcaptainnemo

Yes, I'm a fanboy and I don't see the term to be a negative thing.

I couldn't find the quote from Abrams, however the way it was quoted to me was without the "just", that being said, my original question still stands. Is this really going to be the movie to bridge the gap between the brainless MTV generation and Star Trek fans? It sounds like it's working for you. WHY is that something to strive for? Are there no other story lines or characters that could be used?

I don't think it's “MTV like” just because it has younger actors in it, I think it's MTV like because of the direction they've taken the universe. The 20-something crew, including emo Spock, fly around in the Genius Bar fighting the angst-ridden bad guy. It's lame, it reeks of what you would see on MTV. I'm sorry if I've insulted your favorite station but it's subpar television, something Abrams (in my opinion) is known for.

It's stupid ideas like 'Let's give Spock an action upgrade' and give him over-the-top emotional reactions that make this whole project sound idiotic. Trying to make money off of a younger generation, by changing characters which have been perfectly fine for 40 years, and adding characteristics they don't have or require, just to make them more appealing to the masses, removes what was lovable about this story and what attracted people to the characters in the first place. The actors they've used for this piece of shit look like people who would be chosen to do a spoof, which is all this will be.

"How can you call it “craptacular” when there hasn’t been ANY actual footage from the movie released? Answer me that." Teaser trailer is out. Pictures have been released. The synopsis is floating around.

"Everyone I know who has seen the pics and the teaser have thought it looks interesting, at the worst, and awesome at best." Great. So you know morons. Congratulations.

"They can’t change anything major or people will notice, but little things are fine, I think." Little things like personalities? Character ages? Technology? The Star Trek universe? Canon?

I don't mind discussing points but the fact that you feel the need to attempt to "own" somebody on the interwebs shows a serious lack of self-esteem and is pretty fucking lame. Have a nice day.
  • Watched this last night at the beginning of Bond...

and f**kin stole the show for me!!! The first 20 minutes of Bond, I was still thinking about it

I recently saw the ‘NEW’ Star Trek Teaser (not trailer, its only about one-minute and ten seconds long) and here are some observations and thoughts for all you fans out there. I’ll try to be as accurate and brutally honest as I can about my first impressions:

    1) The intro to the trailer is pretty exciting, probably the best quality about the whole thing. Like people have said, we see a young boy driving an old-fashioned corvette convertable along a dusty yet scenic road. The horizon is filled with unfamilar-looking futuristic architecture. Rest assured, it looks epic and unique, not like other CGI effects before it. So far so good.

    2) On the downside, the emerging of Chris Pine as Kirk is painfully underwhelming, Pine doesn’t really look anything like Kirk, nor does he sound like Kirk. However, judging from the footage, Pine seems to have the character down. It should be an interesting performance, just don’t expect a Shatner revival or even a mild channeling, which fans would like to have seen (much like an idealized young Anakin, unfortunately, those movies didn’t really do that too well).

    3) The effects of the spaceships and battles & planets are frankly, not what I was expecting. I don’t necessarily mean that in a positive way. Many people have been saying that Abrams Trek would resemble a more gritty feel, ships would be metallic-like, brooding and menacing. The fire and explosions would be classic Trek universe, we would feel like part of this epic world. Unfortunately, at first glance, this is a completely re-imaged atmosphere. The effects look at lot like the one’s in Speed Racer, Transformers and Star Wars Episode I. Dare I say they look ‘fake’, but that seems to be the case. It is all very cotton-candy like, all bright and colorful. Perhaps this isn’t such a bad thing, but I didn’t recognize any technology that would feel ‘at home’ so to speak in terms of Rodenberry’s Trek. This is clearly Abrams’ and company’s creation. This is slightly disappointing.

    4) On the plus side, the story looks to be pretty interesting. A lot of hints at setting up dualities and complex themes between Spock’s quest to be more human and Kirk’s rebellious nature. Also, there seems to be something momumental happening, something like a giant war, the birth of the Federation or the invasion of a planet, thus forcing Spock’s parents to give him up and join the Federation. Kirk also seems to have been thrusted into the mess, the whole movie judging from the trailer has this feel of being a kind of coming-of-age or loss-of-innocence story, which is fantastic news. This should flesh out the characters and provide much humor and action.

    5) On the negative, judging from this brief trailer, the new actors are a huge disappointment; particularly Chekov, Uhura, Bones and mostly Spock. I found Zachary Quinto to be underwhelming. Not only did he sound sort of whiney and high-pitched like an actor from the CW on channel 7 but contrary to popular hype, he doesn’t really look like Leonard Nimoy. Karl Urban does not sound anything like Dr. McCoy, heck, he doesn’t even seem to be trying to emulate him; he just sounds like Karl Urban. This was a dissapointment. On the plus, Simon Pegg seems to be immersing himself into the role of Scotty. Expect a perfect portrayal with lots of comic relief. PLEASE NOTE: This is only judging from the small clips, we can’t know how good they’ll really be until we see them.

    6) Lastly, the costumes and make-up seemed underwhelming in the trailer as well. It frankly looked like the shows you see on WB, like Smallville or Supernatural. Uninspired acting set up against some chessy blue-screen. After the trailer was over and Eric Bana delivered that corny one-liner, the audience seemed to be braindead and gave no reactions, not even little grins or chatters.

    7) My final thoughts on the trailer is that the story seems epic and grand, the special effects somewhat mediocre, some of the performances off, though Kirk and Scotty seem fine. While the scenery is great, the effects and ships themselves look fake. This looks to be a complete re-imagining of Star Trek rather than a Prequel or re-incarnation. I was hoping for the latter, rather than the former, but I’ll just have to wait and see. Some of you may see this trailer and totally dig the new-look and feel, that’s all well and good but like I said before, its WAY too early to make any judgements. Just hope for the best and look forward to what perhaps will be the best film of next summer.
