Joe Johnston to Direct Captain America

Marvel Studios has just signed Joe Johnston to direct The First Avenger: Captain America. Like many, I was impressed with Johnson’s early art/effects work, loved October Sky, but was pretty disappointed with everything he has done since (::cough:: Jurassic Park III ::cough::). However, the footage I saw from The Wolf Man at Comic Con was very impressive. Johnston seems like an odd choice for this Marvel franchise, especially considering his background in visual effects, which would have made him more valuable in a project with a more visually dynamic superhero (like The Incredible Hulk).

A Breif History of Joe Johnston

Johnston started his career as an artist at Lucasfilm, having famously provided the final designs for Star Wars characters Yoda and Boba Fett. He won an academy award for his visual effects work on Raiders of the Lost Ark. Supposedly Johnston and George Lucas got close, and Joe was invited to cit in during George’s editing sessions. Later when Joe announced that he would be leaving the company to travel the world with the money he had saved up, Lucas convinced him to attend his alma mater USC film School, and even paid his tuition.

Johnston was a second unit director on *batteries not included, and made his directorial debut with Honey I Shrunk the Kids. In the 1990’s, Johnson directed The Rocketeer, the live action sequences of The Pagemaster, Jumanji, and crescendoed with October Sky. Steven Spielberg handed Johnston the Jurassic Park series with Jurassic Park III. His remake of The Wolf Man for Universal will hit theaters in April 2009. Interestingly, Johnson was also at one point in line to direct Hulk, but for one reason or another decided to drop out.

The First Avenger: Captain America is set to hit theaters on May 6th 2011, just two months before Marvel’s superhero team-up film The Avengers (July 15th 2011). Considering the films will be interconnected, this means Johnson will need to cast his Steve Rogers / Captain America very soon. Also, no screenwriters have been hired for the project, but Marvel has supposedly been heading pitches and hopes to hire someone soon.

I’ve never really been a fan of Captain America, like some I found his extreme patriotism and stupid outfit to be a turn off. Plus, his weapon is a shield?! C’mon!

But recently one of my friends convinced me to buy The Ultimates: Volume 1, was has totally changed my mind about Captain America and the whole idea of a superhero team-up. If you haven’t yet read The Ultimates, you should definitely check it out (it is available for under $20 on Amazon). I have no doubt that the storyline will be used as a guideline for the end of the Captain America film and the beginning of The Avengers movie.

As previously revealed, the film will be a period piece set entirely during World War II. Filming will take place primarily at Raleigh Studios in Manhattan Beach, CA. The rumored plot synopsis follows:

“Born during the Great Depression, Steve Rogers grew up a frail youth in a poor family. Horrified by the newsreel footage of the Nazis in Europe, Rogers was inspired to enlist in the army. However, because of his frailty and sickness, he was rejected. Overhearing the boy’s earnest plea, General Chester Phillips offered Rogers the opportunity to take part in a special experiment… Operation: Rebirth. After weeks of tests, Rogers was at last administered the ‘Super-Soldier Serum’ and bombarded by ‘vita-rays.’ Steve Rogers emerged from the treatment with a body as perfect as a body can be and still be human. Rogers was then put through an intensive physical and tactical training program. Three months later, he was given his first assignment as Captain America. Armed with his indestructible shield and and battle savvy, Captain America has continued his war against evil both as a sentinel of liberty and leader of the Avengers.”

Discuss: What do you guys think of the choice of Joe Johnston to direct Captain America?

Read some of Ed Brubaker's Captain America and you'll change your mind about CA even more than just reading The Ultimates.
  • gah
Really? This is the best you could do Marvel? And as for that Wolf Man footage, that was probably the most boring thing I've ever laid eyes on. I would rather play bingo with my grandma than see that film.
  • Leo
I don't know how to take this news. Is he the only director capable of capture such an intense character as Captain America. I guess we'll see.
  • William
This is definitely an interesting selection for director. I must admit he would not have been my first choice for director. Since we are working with an individual character I would like to have seen Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) direct. If The Wolf Man turns out to be a great success I would say Marvel made a good choice.
  • SOLID
A poor man's spielberg he may be, but his Rocketeer movie was very good. I like this choice. Now just get Pitt for Cap and we're in great shape guys.
  • Mr. B
How suprised I am that you hadn't picked up The Ultimates yet. Even though they've been pulling from other writers and materials.

The Ultimates to me has been the main source of imagery (especially the Nick Fury= SLJ) and ideas for most of Marvel's newest works.

Hopefully they'll also borrow the idea of Thor as a male nurse and eco-terrorist. Also the loss of the cape and winged helmet.
  • hmmm The Rocketeer, yes.
  • Hana
Yeah, what Mr. B said - Ultimate Marvel universe is amazing, particularly the Ultimates first and second runs. Iron Man and the Hulk felt far more like Ultimate Marvel properties than classic. The entire idea of Sam Jackson as Nick Fury originated in Ultimate Marvel, and the Nick Fury of the Ultimates is fantastic - especially the bit where he suggested Sam Jackson play him in a movie...
  • Captain Awesome
Joe Johnston is a good pick. I loved The Rocketeer and from what I've seen of Wolf Man. If Johnston can pull off jingoism in Rocketeer. He can with this character.

I do agree with you Peter. I always found Captain America to be a rather stupid character as a whole. A by-product of the WW2 era that seemed to have stuck around. Just never got into him, even after reading The Ultimates (Though they did manage to make his costume less ridiculous looking in that run). I think the only time I enjoyed him as a character was when John Buscema used to draw the old Avengers comics with amazing skill. But that was mostly for art sakes.

Johnston could make an enjoyable film. But it comes down to how the character handles politics in this. You can't make a film with a character running around with what equates to a giant American Flag all over his body and a giant hub cap on his arm. And not make it political.
  • People who think Captain American is kind of dumb obviously haven't read Ed Brubaker's run on Captain American as of late. Read it and you will respect the shield!
  • StarBlazer101
Come on people! This is the man behind Boba Fett, Yoda, & Raiders! I for one have high hopes!
  • bickle
Great choice in Johnson, if only for having shot the Rocketeer. if that points to where marvel are going with Captain America thats great. what makes CA interesting especially in the Ultimate marvel universe is the contrast between the WW2 hero and adjusting to the modern world. could see the rocketeer style working to make a real folksy WW2 CA and then see him have to adjust to a modern world in the Avengers.

I like what marvel are doing with their directors hiring not hacks but reliable shooters instead of particularly visionary directors. With marvel it would be great to have a house style so their films all look and feel similar like they could have been made by the same people and fit together into the marvel universe they are creating. Hulk and iron man had a similar look to them. you don't need someone with a strong individual style like Chris Nolan for that.
  • NotSurprised
This is an inspired choice! i expect greatness! That and he already has a period superhero(kinda) film with the Rocketeer. He will make Captain America shine!
  • Captain Awesome
"I like what marvel are doing with their directors hiring not hacks but reliable shooters instead of particularly visionary directors."

So being a visionary is a bad thing now? And reliability means mindless?

Every artist wants to leave a signature behind. Not create the same mediocrity someone else can do. Unless you're happy like most hacks to just get paid.
  • Sheriff Dewey
Joe Johnston? Really? Jumanji? The Rocketeer? C'mon. Did anyone actually watch Jurassic Park 3? This guy is a hack! This is as bad as if they hired Rob Cohen or Stephen Sommers! This is bad news for Captain America and it will be even worse news for Marvel's profits. Oh well - guess we should start looking forward to the franchise reboot in 2012!

    Captain Awesome For The Win

This film is officially in bad hands
  • dlb
I retract my last statement. The Wolfman looks fucking rad
  • orange cinema
even though he's gone, i prefer rogers (top picture) over barnes (bottom picture).
  • matt
That last pic you posted on the article of "Captain America" isn't Steve Rogers. Thats Captain Winters.

    You should change it. =P
  • bickle
'So being a visionary is a bad thing now? And reliability means mindless?'

Nothing wrong being a visionary just its not always about the director. look at high end episodic TV like 24 or the Wire, they have a house style that works and is consistent that doesn't mean they use 'mindless' directors. it would be cool to have a stylistic continuity between the marvel universe films and a more independent director, the Fincher's, Nolan's etc. would want to bring their own very individual style to it.
  • Hi
amasing for you capt america it my spesial one
  • Joe Newman
Joe Johnston is a hit, miss, or sightly tap director
  • Steelo
Well if it's played right it can be a mix between Rocketeer and Saving Private Ryan.

Captain America is propaganda and always has been. to criticize something like that is ignorant. It's like Uncle Sam and Kernel Sanders. It's just a character in the purest sense.

The Ultimates works because that 50's propaganda is now put in the context of the modern day. How does it hold up and what does the American ideal stand for? That's why Cap has a gun now and the shield stands for the defense of the nation.

That's why if this is a period piece I think this suits everything. It won't be taken seriously and at least Marvel is thinking about it's director based on past experience, Because let's be real: Rocketeer, Jurassic III and The Wolf Man whether good or bad al have the feel of past classic propaganda and monster movies.
  • Dr. Lizardo
Yeah, this guy directing the Rocketeer gives me hope for this film
  • edog
Am I the only one who thought that October Sky was so cliched it rendered itself unbelievable?
  • Steelo
    to edog

And a dude in red white and blue with a shield fighting a nazi war criminal that looks like a talking red skull is supposed to be real?

    come on dawg.
  • Steelo
    or "believable" I should say
  • Iron Matt
    @Hana

Exactly how familiar are you with the Ultimate Iron Man property? Because the film Iron Man is almost nothing like Ultimate Iron Man.
  • Detective Comic
I think he's actually a great director. He made Jurassic Park 3, the script for that movie wasn't good but he did a good job executing it! The scene with the pteradactal walking across the bridge through the fog and The Scene with the Spinosaurus staring at them in front of the electric fence come on!!! I can't say I'm "unhappy" with this choice, i'll give hm a chance!
  • David
Hope he doesnt make it that a peice of crap turn Cap into a black guy instead of blonde hair blue eyes I will storm Marvel and tell them they have failed their base.
  • Well, people are overlooking that he directed Hidalgo. That was a fantastic film, with tons of goosebump-emotional beats mixed in with action and adventure. Between Hidalgo and Rocketeer, it is easy to see why he was the choice. Now look at the cast that has signed on for the wolfman, actors like this guy, actors want to work with this guy. He is not going to have a problem getting big talent for supporting roles, allowing him to perhaps have some freedom in choosing a much smaller-name talent for the lead, should he choose. I dont know of any A-Listers that can really fit the bill, besides Matt Damon or Matt Mc-kinda-gay. While both those actors could probably do a fair job, I think there are certainly better options out there to portray captain america among up and comers from a variety of television shows.

For those who are comparing Captain America to Uncle Sam, you are just off-base. Captain America is closer to Austin Powers than he is Uncle Sam. His defining characteristic is that he is a man out of time. His morals, beliefs and ideals are of a bygone era, the greatest generation. What makes him interesting in the comics, and hopefully in the film as well, is how his world-view compares to our reality. Granted, the first film will take place entirely during WW2, so this comparision will only be for the audience to make as they would while watching any period film, but in the Avengers, it should be quite a bit more evident. The dynamic of Cap representing the values of the past, clashing against Stark, who represents the future, is a big part of what makes Avengers work.

What I think is interesting is that for his time, cap was probably a very liberal man when it came to things like race and gender relations and other issues of the day in the 1940s. However, when you bring him into the year 2010, his views are probably still extremely conservative. It will be interesting to see how Johnston sets this up for the Avengers film.

Cap is certainly a complex character, who finds himself serving the United States Army, which rarely is able to live up to Cap's strict moral code. This puts him in morally compromising positions regularly. Cap is used as a symbol of government corruption almost as often as a symbol of unbridled patriotism.

Cap is a great character with a great mythos, and I can't wait to see what direction this film takes. I am happy with the decision for director, and I think the next two most important pieces of this film are going to be casting steve rogers/cap, and how the captain america costume is designed. We already know some tidbits of the script, such as its WW2 setting. I think that is already on the right track. I am just curious who the villain will be, nazis, red skull, or chitarri aliens, or something else.
  • Turned off by his costume? WHat kind of Liberal scumbag are you? Geez. The greatest country in the world for a reason.
  • Jimmy P Niss
Captain America is a pathetic concept that will be more visually pathetic on screen. A fruitcake wearing red, white and blue tights brandishing a shield is hardly enough to raise the fears of foes. The only thing that could get me to pay to see this is a gratuitous sex scene between Bruce Banner and Steve Rogers...Bruce hulks while he is inside Steve...awesome! Joe Johnston sucks and his list of movies directed were all crap. The Rocketeer was about as riveting as a cold toilet seat.
