Batman Sues Christopher Nolan

Yes, you read the headline correctly, Batman is suing The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan. Of course, I’m not taking about the fictional caped crusader - I’m talking about the real life little known city in southeast Turkey. The city named after the Bat? Raman Mountains, predates the comic book vigilante by almost a decade. Residents believe the success of the popular American film adaptations could be partly to blame for the city’s increasing suicide rates among women and unsolved murder rates. Has the comic book superhero ruined their city’s namesake value?

“The royalty of the name ‘Batman’ belongs to us … There is only one Batman in the world. The American producers used the name of our city without informing us,” Hüseyin Kalkan, the pro-Kurdish Democratic Society Party mayor, told to the Do?an news agency.

Also, local Batman residents living abroad aren’t allowed due to American copyright/trademark laws to use Batman as a title for their business. A former Batman resident named two of his German restaurants in homage to the city, but was forced six months ago by ” a team of employees from the production company of the movie” to change the title of his business.

But the time in which the city could have legally objected to the registration of “Batman” and will likely be out of luck. I’m not sure what they hope to get from suing the film’s director Christopher Nolan. Seems like a rather pointless exercise in an attempt to get some attention.

    little late on that

I think it's funny that they're not suing the creator of Batman, D.C., and not the people who own the movie rights, Warner Bros., but instead suing the dude who made the movie, Chris Nolan.

I was in Turkey this past August, waiting around in an airport terminal I saw the name of the city, and had a good laugh about it, a place actually called Batman. Obviously the turkish alphabet is different from our own, so it would have a different meaning and pronunciation there.

"let's not blow things out of proportion"
  • its nice to know theres a city named batman but for the place to bill acting like WB or chris nolan owe them something is outrageous. it really does sound like they just want attention.

in a related story, the south american town of aquaman is suing Dan Didio over massive flooding and high levels of mercury in their sea bass.

I wonder if the real-life superhero Gotham will sue the fictional city for taking his name too
  • Kenny
Where do people come up with this shit?
  • Jamie
Well, this sounds ridiculous until you see the hysterical lawsuits filed by corporations like Apple, Microsoft, Disney and so on.

They have sued for less, believe me. If your name was Joe Apple and you had a restaurant called Apple's with an apple logo, you would probably be sued. Does Apple own all rights to the word "apple?" No. Do they own all rights to a logo with an apple? No.

They sue anyway. They all do it. And in reverse, the take what they don't own. Did Apple own the iPhone name? No. Was it being used already by an electronics company for a phone device? Yes.

Obviously, this lawsuit from the people of Batman city is insane, but I'm really surprised that they weren't already sued for simply existing.
  • Congratulations, Americans, you're no longer the most frivolous people in the world :P

The residents are nuts. The success of a couple movies about a fictional character to blame for an increase in female suicide and the rate of unsolved murders? Puh-lease.

If they are so upset about the movies and everything, where were they during Batmania in the 80s?

Is there even a court for these things?

It does seem strange that WB would tell a guy with a German restaurant that he couldn't name it Batman. This new suing seems like a retaliatory response to something like that. Escalation.

I don't know what's worse. Choosing now to sue a company for their 60 year old creation, or blaming Batman for suicides and unsolved murders. I didn't know a whole city could be such a d-bag. I would probably commit suicide and murder if I lived in a place like that too. So, indirectly, they're probably onto something here.
  • Troy
    What the F*ck??
  • Dav
Technically, it's DC that could sue this city as the city was renamed Batman in the mid-1950s and Batman was created in 1939.
  • Oi Vey
it's funny how after TIm Burton's and even Joel Shumucker's Batman movies, they waited until now to sue.

Interestingly enough one of Australia's great early explorers was a Mr. Batman, and I do believe that there was a possibility that Melbourne was going to be called Batman [citation needed]

Maybe its time for alterna-reality Melbourne to sue Christian Bale
  • marz
thats like every city named springfield decides to sue the creators of the simpsons because they 'depict' the place as being crazy and wild.if that goes to court..maan they'l take ANY case!!
  • Andrew
I love how this town is upset now. But when Batman has been such a huge name for so many years, and now after The Dark Knight this town Batman wants to make a big fuss.

I think it people need to get over themselves and just STFU...
  • edc
I don't know if melbourne was going to be called Batman, but I do know that when I flew over there [from sydney, the much better city] to meet bruce timm and rino romano at a convention, rino said he went to "batman's hill". [I'm sure mr timm and his family posed like goofy tourists at the hill]
  • Nish
How did they link the movie to increased suicide rates in women?
  • theuglyspirit
    Hahaha what?
  • James Mac
Perhaps the high suicide rate has more to do with the way women are treated in the city of Batman and the high rate of unsolved murders due to lack of care taken by the local constabulary. The city of Batman needs to take a long hard look at itself particularly in light of this stupidity.

Batman comics and TV shows has been around a long time.
I think this suit is quite dumb.

Sued for using Batman? That's nothing. Did you know there is a town in Austria called Fucking?

    It's true: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fucking,_Austria

Wait until everyone in the world gets sued by that town for fucking without permission.
