Monsters vs. Aliens Movie Trailer

Update: A revised trailer is now officially back online.

Dreamworks Animation has released the official trailer for Monsters vs. Aliens I had an opportunity to see ten minutes of this film in 3D before Comic-Con, and while I’m not entirely sold on the characters, I will tell you that the 3D in this film is the best I’ve ever seen in a computer animated feature. It’s the first movie to be completely developed for 3D, instead of just converted to 3D in a post production process. Its something that needs to be experienced to be believed. Check out the trailer below, and tell me what you think in the comments.

Plot Synopsis:
“Monsters vs. Aliens,” which is slated for a domestic release date of March 27, 2009, reinvents the classic ’50s monster movie into an irreverent modern day action comedy.

The cast of “Monsters vs. Aliens” includes: Oscar® winner Reese Witherspoon (”Walk the Line,” “Rendition”) as Susan Murphy, a.k.a. Ginormica; Golden Globe winner Hugh Laurie (TV’s “House,” “Stuart Little”) as Dr. Cockroach, Ph.D.; Will Arnett (TV’s “Arrested Development,” “Blades of Glory”) as The Missing Link; Seth Rogen (”Knocked Up,” “Superbad”) as B.O.B.; Rainn Wilson (”Juno,” TV’s “The Office”) as Gallaxhar; Emmy winner Stephen Colbert (TV’s “The Colbert Report,” “Bewitched”) as The President of the United States; Golden Globe winner Kiefer Sutherland (TV’s “24,” “Phone Booth”) as General W.R. Monger; and Paul Rudd (”Knocked Up,” “Night at the Museum”) as Susan’s boyfriend, Derek.

“Monsters vs. Aliens” is directed by Rob Letterman (”Shark Tale”) and Conrad Vernon (”Shrek 2″), produced by Lisa Stewart (”I Think I Love My Wife”) and co-produced by Jill Hopper and Latifa Ouaou. The film marks the theatrical debut of DreamWorks Animation’s Ultimate 3-D, the studio’s proprietary production process of authoring its animated films in 3-D from start to finish.

When California girl Susan Murphy is unexpectedly clobbered by a meteor full of outer space gunk, she mysteriously grows to 49-feet-11-inches tall and is instantly labeled a “monster” named Ginormica. The military jumps into action, and she is captured and held in a secret government compound. The world learns that the military has been quietly rounding up other monsters over the years. This ragtag group consists of the brilliant but insect-headed Dr. Cockroach, Ph.D.; the macho half-ape, half-fish The Missing Link; the gelatinous and indestructible B.O.B.; and the 350-foot grub called Insectosaurus. Their confinement time is cut short however, when a mysterious alien robot lands on Earth and begins storming the country.

As a last resort, under the guidance of General W.R. Monger (on a desperate order from The President), the motley crew of Monsters is called into action to combat the aliens and save the world from imminent destruction.

"UFOs has landed in America...the only country UFOs ever seem to land in"

    HAHAHA!
  • r caya
    haha this movie sucks
  • BadWasabi
This is gonna be Dreamwork's best! Looks on par with Pixar stuff!!
  • r caya
you were wrong. pixar is the best. movie sucks
  • Unfortunately you are right, this movie sucked. It was fun, but not a good movie. I had higher hopes.
  • Blobbi
Looks like fun... but the evil alien looks like Obama - coincidence? :-)
Btw: the "fullscreen" button doesn't work on this trailer.
  • Belasarion
@Blobbi - My son and I just saw it. I noticed the resemblance and commented to my son after the movie and he burst out laughing and said he had noticed it also. I googled Obama Aliens and Monsters to see if anybody else noticed it and found this site. Was it intentional? The ears, mouth and jaw + attitude. Had to be ....

Dreamworks seem to have re-captured what made Shrek and to some extent Shrek 2 so good. After a few not so good movies I think they're back onto thier animated best.
  • Eric B.
LOL! This is gonna be so great
  • simon2it
Looks alright. Some of the jokes seem to obvious in my mind. Like the "A UFO has landed in America, the only country UFOs seem to land in" or whatever. I mean, people have been making that joke for years.
  • Chris
I liked the teaser, and I like this too. Looks like it will be funny.
  • R_McCall
“UFOs has landed in America…the only country UFOs ever seem to land in” - loved it. This is cute, it's just damn cute. I can't hate you cute Dreamworks film (even though I may try). C'mere, let me give you a hug...
  • i think this looks pretty good too - solid cast. i thought id be sick of seth rogen's voice roles - but not yet!

def looks on par with Kung fu panda - but no way is it anywhere near the classiness of a pixar title.

not a diss on dreamworks - but let's face it - not even 'oscar calibre' films are as good as pixar flicks.
  • charles
    Looks better than Shreak
  • BeyondtheTech
Hilarious! I don't know who's gonna love it more, me or my kids!
  • Ryan
    Looks pretty solid.
One thing I know, what a kick ass movie title.
  • Suess
This certainly looks better and more original than most of the garbage Dreamworks Animation has been putting out (in other words, everything but Shrek, Shrek 2, and Kung Fu Panda). I love how the news reporter sounds like Tom Brokaw, which makes his line ten times funnier.
  • MonkeyMafia
I thought the same exact thing Blobbi
  • Rodney
"It’s the first movie to be completely developed for 3D, instead of just converted to 3D in a post production process."

This is not true... It's not even close to being true. There have been quite a few movies made with 3D in mind from start to finish.

I do expect the 3D to be great, I'm going to be seeing it in IMAX 3D!
  • mikem
My Nephew is gonna love this
  • tobor68
good concept, bland execution. god this animation style hurts my eyes.
  • Ender
The humor's good and the animation is great, but I'm not big on the plot (and I hate it when movies put the word "vs" in the title).
  • Rodney is right.
    The Ant Bully for one.
  • Bill
I LOVE this concept. Can't wait to see it.
  • Reggie
I love how they made Seth Rogen the brainless alien. So true to life!
  • south texas terror
    Hotdogs!
  • Smumdax
Darn.. trailer removed... is it anywhere else, in a "legal" kind of way? (On a personnal note: It's only a stupid trailer... this is free publicity, and they ask you to remove it, quite dumb)
  • danno
It should be "Monsters Versus Aliens", as in "Joe Versus the Volcano".
I'm sick and tired of explaining this.
  • aled
couldnt see the trailer but anything with seth roegen, paul rudd and stephen colbert i am seeing it.
  • OAKside
Fuckin' eh, Dreamworks. Remove the trailer or die?! What kind of nonsense is this?!?
  • Bobcat
    I'm sold!
  • @ Blobbi "The evil alien looks like Obama - coincidence?"

I thought that too...the movie looks fun for the kids.
  • Joe
Just one difference between Dreamworks and Pixar:

It takes me 30 seconds to recognize the voices in this movie from the trailer alone (even Colbert).

I only knew one voice from Wall-E going into it, and only one from Ratatouille. I knew a few from Cars, but none from The Incredibles (well, Sam Jackson).
  • ilves
yea... the obama face was a bit creepy
  • Ghost
The style is almost bordering on ripping the Incredibles. The monsters could have been better and I'm tired of Rogen in everything especially voice work, but I will see it for the 3D since it's supposedly that good.
But I think Dreamworks touched Pixar when they did Kung Fu Panda, this won't come that close. But looks like it's some fun.
  • Meli
    This looks highly entertaining!
  • Andyrooskie
I'll second that this isn't the first CG movie to be developed for 3D. Monster House is the first that leaps to mind.

A lot of this trailer works really well, and then they kill it by going one step too far. The montage of the guy having to scan every body part was funny in a wry kind of way... and then he pulls down his pants and scans his butt.

And every kid in the theater shrieks with laughter, cause they suddenly get the joke. This is what separates Dreamworks from Pixar- faith in the material enough to exercise restraint. The robot stomping on the blob doesn't get funnier the more times you show it.

    Fun concept though.
  • Diana
Oh my goodness! I can't wait to see this.

It looks fantastic. I think I'll even go see this without borrowing a friend's kid as an excuse!

    Looks so cute. And hilarious.
  • The first non-Pixar animated movie the trailer has made me excited about since Shrek the Third (sure, that turned out to be meh, but you see what I'm saying).

And holy crap. I forgot about the awesomeness that was Monster House. Should've won Best Animated Feature over both Cars and Happy Feet.
  • Oh, and the President looks like Mike Nichols.
  • Brian
I would say it looks good, but Seth Rogen is in it so...
  • edog
Hopefully the actual movie is funnier than the trailer.
  • this is just a wanna be monsters inc and monsters inc kicks ass
  • gocitizen
    Andyrooskie nailed it.
I'm sure kids will love it.

I just don't respond to the Dreamworks humor. It seems forced, like I can imagine the writers sitting in their room coming up with the joke. If they could relax and allow the humor to come from the characters, I'd be more apt to buy in.
  • thomas040
    bah. didn't even smile once.
  • Sue
Well, the animation itself looks solid. But I can't get along with the frozen humor of Dreamworks. Some people lik it, some not, not dissing anyone. The idea is old like my grandmother. Aliens and Monsters, they've got to be kidding. It's no use, for some brilliant voice-actors and the Oscar-nomination title behind them. Pixar has more innovation.

Anyhow, it shure will be fun for the kids. Just for them.
I agree with gocitizen, its a slash of The Incredibles and Monster Inc.
    Sad but true.
  • mimi
Exactly...I saw the movie yesterday and the first thing I noticed was that the boss Alien looks and acts like Obama.
