First Look: Kevin Smith’s Batman

MySpace has revealed a first look at the new Kevin Smith-penned Batman comic book miniseries Batman: Cacophoney. Written by Smith, featuring art by Walt Flanagan (of Steve Dave and Walt fame) and Sandra Hope, the first issue in this three issue miniseries hits stores on November 12th 2008. Cacophoney will reportedly feature the villains Onomatopoeia (a character created by Smith during his run at Green Arrow), Joker and Victor Zsasz. More after the jump.

The plot synopsis for the first issue follows:

“Practically from out of nowhere, the mysterious masked killer known as Onomatopoeia returns and sets his sights – and sounds – against The Caped Crusader!”

As you probably know, Smith was one of the first Hollywood guys to jump over to comic books, penning the an eight issue run on Daredevil titled Guardian Devil, which was critically acclaimed in its day. Smith also wrote 15-issues of Green Arrow, a Spider-Man/Black Cat and Daredevil/Bullseye miniseries.

You can buy the first issue or the whole set signed by Smith and Flanagan on Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash, or unsigned in for $3.99 at your local comic book shop.

  • I hope this turns out well, I'm not a big DC fan but I've always liked Batman.

It looks cool... 'til it comes out. Then, we'll see...
  • Joker looks like a tranny...

    a batmanless preview? lame
  • Oi Vey
    Joker looks terrible..

Not quite sure how well Kevin Smith's humor is going to do with Batman. Green Arrow is one thing, Onomatopeia fits well with the tongue in cheek humor with the Green Arrow, I wouldn't think it would do so well with the dark serious tone of Batman.

Hopefully this run goes on for more then 2 issues...

I don't mind Smith's humor. Batman stories can be humorous if the tone's right, and i'm not against it, per say, esp if its a stand-alone story.

But the art screams late 90s/early 2000 generic work.

    @ Delta
It's a three issue mini so yes it will but just barely.
  • Dan
damn that art sucks. I think I'd have too hard of a time reading it because the bad drawings would just distract me and turn me off from it.

    Thats a shame.
  • Henry Jones Jr
Sweet cover. How come they haven't been able to make Batman look this cool in the movies yet?
  • Chris
    "Heavens to murgatroyd"?

    No thanks.
  • Marvin

I LIKE THE IDEA, BUT THE TERM CACAPHONY IS SOMETYHING OUT OF JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL. SMITH'S CAREER IS BECOMING CACAPHONY. INSTEAD OF EVOLVING, HE IS GOING BACKWARDS, THE PORNO THING IS 9TH GRADE. HOLLYWOOD FILMS ARE REALLY BAD, IT SEEMS, POOR CREATIONS, ASIDE FROM A FEW SEQUELS. STANLEY KUBRICK ON CE SAID " IT IS DIFFICULT TO GAUGE WHAT AUDIENCES WANT. ASIDE FROM SEQUELS TO TO SUCCESSFUL FILMS IT IS A CHALLENGE. AUDIENCES DONT EVEN KNOW WHAT THEY WANT, UNTIL THEY SEE IT."

UNFORTUNATELY, AUDIENCES ARE BEING FORCED TO EAT ALOT OF GARBAGE, AND THATS FROM THE GAJONKA, BABE.

TRYING TO BE MORE POSITIVE HUNTER AND PETER, IT WILL COME ( SEE EXAMPLES FROM HE-MAN AND GI JOE POSTS) IT WILL COME, BUT IT CANNOT BE FORCED, WE CANNOT IGNORE SUB-PAR FILM. MONEY SPENT ON BAD TALENT AND IDEAS.

GRAN TORIONO LOOKS GOOD, EASTWOOD IS SMART AS AN ACTOR AND DIRECTOR. IN STAGE 3 CLINT, JUST BEFORE MYSTIC RIVER, JACKED HIM OIN HIS AWARD WINNING RUN, HE DIRECTED AND STARRED IN BLOOD WORK. THERE ARE SMART ELEMENTS IN THAT FILM. SEE THE SCEN WHERE HE SPEAKS WITH THE BLACK WOMAN, OLD FRIEND FROM THE FBI. IT IS SMART AND IT IS REALISTIC AND IT IF ( FINALLY) WORTH OUR TIME.

NOW, A NEW HALLOWEEN IS COMING, KEEPING tAYLOR MANE ( WHICH IS GOOD, HE IS HUGE, AS MYERS IS BOTH PHYSICALLY AND LEGENDARY, BUT WE NEEDA GOOD IDEA, A GOOD STORY. I NEED AKKADS ADDRESS TO GET HIM SOME IDEEAS THAT WILL WORK.

REMEMBER, MOUSTAPHA ( HIS FATHER AND CREATOR) WAS KILLED IN A HOTEL BOMBING IN LEBANON. IT WAS AL QUEADA THAT TARGETED HIM FOR HIS COMMENTS AGAINST THEIR PRACTICES. HE WAS MURDERED. THERES IS MORE TO THE STORYM, BUT I NEED TO GRAB A SMOKE, THANKS GUYS. KEEP UPO THE GREAT WORK, YOU AREW THE BEST. I WISH I COULD BE IN YOUR SHOES, TO WAKE UP AND BE HAPPY EVERYDAY, LIKE WALKEN SAYS , I PUT MY PANTS ON ONE LEG AT A TIME, JUST LIKE YOU, EXCEPT WHEN I GET MY PANTS ONM I MAKE GOLD RECORDS.

NOT FEELING IT. I hate the illustration. I'll stick to the Killing Joke.
  • CeilingCat
Just gotta say that Peter's persistent typos totally ruined the piece for me... Cacophoney != Cacophony, and when the quotes you're using and the screenshots you're including contain the correct spelling, and when (presumably) you have a spellcheck on your computer, how do you manage to screw up so consistently?
