“Quantum of Solace” Almost Featured a James Bond Jr.

New York magazine’s Vulture has a piece (via Film Junk) that describes how Paul Haggis, a screenwriter for Quantum of Solace (and the writer/director for the Best Picture-winning Crash), almost created a child subplot for the next Bond film. According to Marc Forster, Solace’s director:

Haggis had an idea they weren’t fond of, and I didn’t know if it would work or not…The idea was that Vesper in the last movie, maybe she had a kid, and there would be an orphan out there. It wasn’t anything to insult the franchise. But they felt it wasn’t particularly Bond — him looking for the kid. I think Paul thought he just leaves the kid, he doesn’t deal with it. But [the producers] thought that would be really nasty, too, because Bond was an orphan himself. If he would find a kid, would he just leave it? They were so vehemently against it. That was the only time I saw, really, “No, we can’t do that.” They said, “Once he finds the kid, Bond can’t just leave the kid. It’s not right.”

Having spawned from the mind of Haggis, this idea doesn’t really surprise me, but it almost definitely would have been a horrendously executed. What possible positive outcomes could there have been for this scenario? As my /Filmcast colleague Devindra put it, either he keeps the kid and ruins the franchise, or he leaves the kid and is a much bigger asshole than we could have possibly imagined.

The franchise most fresh in my mind that played with this type of thing was Indy 4 and your feelings towards that film as a whole will probably inform how successful you feel that relationship was. But can we all agree that a James Bond Jr. would, as a general thing, be a terrible idea?

Discuss: Would you want to see a Bond film where he deals with his child? What action movies have dealt with father/son relationships satisfyingly?

eugh...i think that would be horrible. sticking a kid into any of the bond movies would slow things down too much...too much "oh shit, you're scared so i have to grab you and carry you here, hide here, oh no, someone is going to hit you with a bat' glad they kept it out..
  • I loved Casino Royale but Quantum sucked. The editing, camera, directing and story were all terrible.

Adding a kid to the mix wouldn't have improved the story but what surprises me the most in this post is that director Marc Forster sounds like he wasn't in charge of the movie.

I really liked Finding Neverland which he directed so I thought he'd do a good job with Quantum but I was really disappointed.

Another example of how bad this idea could turn out is Superman Returns, which had the kid storyline and it kind of killed the revival of the Man of Steel already. The writers gave up trying to come up with a sequel and WB has said they'll shelve the idea and start again.

I'm sure glad this didn't happen with Bond.
With Indy it wasn't a bad choice, considering his women history, it was bound to happen, but the difference between him and Bond is that he's not bound to the limits of his job. Indy is free to do choose to raise the kid, where Bond would have to sacrifice his job. No really an option for the franchise, really.

There was an old cartoon when I was little called "James Bond Jr." It was pretty good although they never mentioned his father who he was exactly like without having sex since he was a teenager lol But yea this would have never worked for the movie.

I remember James Bond Jr! I suppose they could show Bond putting him in a good home saying something like he doesn't want him growing up in his violent world or something.
  • It's great that Haggis is approaching the character and his world from different angles, trying to find new avenues to explore, but I'm glad the producers were wise enough to put their foot down on this. Sounds like an awful idea.
  • If I remember correctly, James Bond, Jr. of the cartoon was the real Bond's nephew.

I'm I the only one that dislikes Paul Haggis and his terrible ideas?

What an incredibly horrible idea! I'm glad there were people in charge smart enough to say no.

Bond Jr = spin off, woo! somebody call Zac Effron
  • Yeah, because that worked out SO well in Superman Returns.

It would be cool ONLY if they got Shia for the role.

I think it was more of an attempt to try to stick more of the Vesper legacy in there than a Bond thing. It might have worked of the kid was from Vesper's past lover and now Bond has to close that out with the kid about the death of his mother.

paul haggis = worst screenwriter ever. i'm not surprised this was his idea, and the fact that he is a writer on quantum of solace makes me even more disturbed about how it will be. first they say it is very bourne-esque and now this... why couldn't they just have gotten the director from casino royale back?

The tired of cliche of a kid being introduced when the show or movie has run out of ideas.
  • Phillip
He could have accepted the kid and maybe decide to get out of the spy buisiness. Then the could have killed the kid off like they did his wife earlier in the franchise. That would really piss him off and give him a motive for revenge. That could give him an excuse to really loose it and take huge risks. Then we could watch him try to regain control and move back to the agency being the Bond we all know.

Something like that could work well with Daniel Craig, who seems like a more raw, edgy 007. That's a lot about what I like about the new, almost re-invention of Bond.
  • Andrew
That is possibly the worst idea I've heard for any action movie. As stated above it didn't work for Indy 4 what makes people think it will work with this?
  • michael keaton
You can't just go around cloning people! That's just^-- That's crazy!
  • Craig M.
    @ Ryan S.

You are correct. The James Bond Jr. in the cartoon was 007's nephew. There was a line in the opening theme about how he "learned the game from his Uncle James".
  • J
Indy IV did pretty well with the kid. it worked and made sense. but it wouldn't for bond. just like it didn't for Superman.
  • Jim
Think about it. Bond has been banging an endless stream of chicks since the 50's, He's totally old school and lives dangerously so you know he ain't wrapping up his junk. To think he has gone this long without slipping one passed the goalie is naive. And before you even think about suggesting he shoots blanks, stop, you know better than that.
  • Danny
Yes! I remember James Bond Jr.

    "Bond...James Bond...JUNIOR!" LOL!

Did somebody just suggest Agent Cody Banks 3?
  • dookie
wow, what a waste of 007's time. why the heck would they make him run around looking for a kid?
  • theuglyspirit
    @ Pangloss

Thank you for a mutual hatred of Paul Haggis.

And an endless thanks to the other screenwriters on Quantum and Casino that kept Haggis's terrible ideas off the page.
  • Dangerous Dave
I don't know about a Bond, Jr., or Paul Haggis, but Daniel Craig looks like a fuckin thug in that picture.
  • jim
I saw the movie yesterday at a sneak preview here in Bulgaria. I have to say I was never a big Bond fan, though I have watched most of the movies. I enjoyed Casino Royale, and I thought this was just as good. Jeffery Wright has like a five-minute appearance and that made the movie for me plus Giancarlo Giannini and ofcourse Mr. Craig who kicked ass. And that girl - Kurylenko or whatever her name is... SHE'S HOT! But you already knew that:)

There is a series of books out about Bond as a teenager. The five books follow his adventures as a 13 year old at Eton in the 1930s. Apparently they've been well received though I've not been interested enough to read them myself. See wikipedia under Young Bond.
  • voltron001
I've always thought they should make a 007 movie where all most previous James Bond return and actually work together... sort of like a team-up Bond movie. I seriously doubt it would ever happen though and it's probably a stupid idea.
