Movie Music For Political Stagecraft

While watching the speeches last night, I geeked out over the fact that I recognized the movie music both candidates used during their victory/concession speeches. After McCain’s gracious concession, the score from Hans Zimmer’s Crimson Tide blasted through the speakers, while Obama used clips from Trevor Rabin’s Remember the Titans immediately following his speech in Grant Park. I thought both musical choices were appropriate, given Tide’s militaristic motifs and Remember the Titans’ soaring themes (not to mention the latter film’s themes of overcoming racial adversity in order to better achieve unity).

Shawn Adler over MTV Movies Blog makes a more astute observation: Both movies star Denzel Washington, and his role in both films is strangely allegorical for the election’s outcome. Crimson Tide “focused on a career Navy man (Gene Hackman), labeled a maverick by some, who is stripped of his authority and ultimately beaten by a young black guy, somewhat new to the scene (Washington),” whereas Titans “followed an African-American coach who brought together whites and blacks to win a championship.” This confirms what many of us already suspected: Denzel Washington embodies every politically compelling narrative known to man.

To hear a clip from the music McCain used, click here. To hear part of Rabin’s Titans score, click here. I personally own both of these soundtracks and would highly recommend them.

  • Whoa, David! Stop the trolley!

The twice repeated theme music was NOT from Remember the Titans but from John Williams' score to The Patriot! It played immediately after Obama's speech and then repeated again as Obama left the stage. As an immense fan of this score, I experienced a brief moment of film geek elation at the incredible (and fitting) selection upon hearing William's largely overlooked score.

I can't comment on the MTV blog, though, so spread the word...

Yeah, Kelly is correct. I thought it was hilarious that McCain got Hans Zimmer music, while Obama got JW.
  • @kelly and josh

I am pretty sure we are both right. If you listen to the music immediately following his speech (and compare it to the Remember the Titans music I've linked to in the post), you will hear that it's exactly the same:

(this video may get taken down but trust me, it's there)

I think he uses the Patriot music afterwards. But Rabin's score is unmistakably there.
  • I thought McCain's theme was from The Rock. Crimson Tide makes a lot of sense, I was actually thinking about it's parallels with the election.
  • What geeks me out is that I was twittering with a few friends about the elections, and one said "Obama is Morgan Freeman, dude, not Chris Rock...", to which I replied, "You're all wrong. Obama's too young to be Morgan. He's Denzel Washington." Now we know who will play Obama in the movie. :)
  • Cool, thanks for the clarification. I realize the allegory in using The Patriot isn't nearly as much fun to consider as Remember the Titans or Crimson Tide ;)

Dang it, I missed the latter half of both broadcast.

David. If you want more music from Remember the Titan, email me and I'll send you a copy, if you don't have it already..

LOL at your Denzel allegories. He is the man.
  • Historic times calls for a good soundtrack...

Because I didn't recognize the Remember the Titans score, the Patriot music stuck out much more to me in my mind. Either way, it was an epic end to an epic election.

wait a sec - I thought that music was from James Horner's score for Glory !?

actually, i don't know, but thought it would be fun to have everyone third guessing.
