Jurassic Park Author Michael Crichton Dies

Various news outlets are reporting that Michael Crichton, the author most famous for Jurassic Park and The Andromeda Strain, has died at the age of 66 after an unpublicized battle with cancer. In addition to writing some of the most memorable books of our time, Crichton has been involved in various film and television projects. He co-wrote the screenplay for Spielberg’s Jurassic Park, created the hit show ER, and is also a capable director, having directed such films as Westworld and The First Great Train Robbery.

I’m sure I’m not alone in saying that Crichton’s works have significantly shaped my life. His ability to intermix thrilling science-fiction with his medical and scientific background has led to some the best works of fiction in the past few decades. In recent years he became an outspoken critic against the theory of global warming—and even though I vehemently disagree with most of his arguments, I have no shame in admitting that he raised the level of discourse for both sides.

His reps released the following on his website:

Best-selling author Michael Crichton died unexpectedly in Los Angeles Tuesday, November 4, 2008 after a courageous and private battle against cancer.

While the world knew him as a great story teller that challenged our preconceived notions about the world around us — and entertained us all while doing so — his wife Sherri, daughter Taylor, family and friends knew Michael Crichton as a devoted husband, loving father and generous friend who inspired each of us to strive to see the wonders of our world through new eyes. He did this with a wry sense of humor that those who were privileged to know him personally will never forget.

Through his books, Michael Crichton served as an inspiration to students of all ages, challenged scientists in many fields, and illuminated the mysteries of the world in a way we could all understand.

He will be profoundly missed by those whose lives he touched, but he leaves behind the greatest gifts of a thirst for knowledge, the desire to understand, and the wisdom to use our minds to better our world.

Michael’s family respectfully asks for privacy during this difficult time.

A private funeral service is expected, but no further details will be released to the public.

I'm incredibly shocked and sad. Crichton has been a pretty big part of my life and I will truly miss waiting for his new books to arrive on shelves. His writing style was both unique and memorable.

I've read his entire collection, and run out to get his new books as soon as they come out. I believe he has a completed book coming out soon, but i don't know the status of it. I've read his books many times since i was a kid, and I am incredibly saddened by this loss. His books and movies have shaped my life, and now that shaping will end.

    RIP Michael Crichton.

If anyone started my love for reading it was Mr. Crichton. I remember wanting to do a book report on Congo when I was in fourth grade and my teacher telling me it was too long. I considered myself a science nerd, but his integration of science with literature made for unforgettable stories that still resonate with me. I could have never imagined how much this news would effect me. I can barely remember a part of my life where Mr. Crichton was not a presence and through his books he really did open up worlds for me to explore that I have revisited over and over again. It sounds cliche, but he has left us a great legacy that will be remember for years and will continue to brighten peoples lives as long as people read.

Rest in peace old friend. I've read all of his books and this is really a surprise.

I'm heartbroken...for me Michael Crichton as not just an amazing author but my best friend as a child/teenager. His book 'A Case of Need' actually kept me from killing myself. I was hooked after reading that book and he made me a better person. My eyes would never had been opened to the world if it had not been for this man...Thank you Michael. If I believed in a Heaven, I would know that there would be at least one Angel looking down on us.
  • wow we have lost another brilliant mind in the sci-fi wolrd
  • Ben

And, people should have more respect.

He inspired me to dream up new ideas and think about a future where anything's possible instead of just accepting what we're given. On top of that, his stories were fun, challenging, and mature. It's too bad the movie adaptations of them were so soft. I hope JP is made right one day as well as his other best stuff. RIP Michael Chrichton. You were a great author.

Because of him I always check behind the shower curtain before using the bathroom, in case there's a raptor back there.

    R.I.P.
  • I saw Jurrasic Park at the Ziegfeld movie theater in NYC twice the day it opened. I can honestly say it was one of the great movie going moments of my life. I will never forget it! Westworld is also one of my favorites! RIP!

i always like to imagine that when great creators like this pass away, they get to live on inside the worlds they created; like that becomes their new universe/existence - yes i realize 'monkeybone' and 'cool world' kinda did this, but i'm thinking of something a lot cooler! if that were the case, what a beautiful eternity MC would have.

again i'll say it: 2008 has been a roller-coaster of a year...RIP Mr. Crichton, thatnks for making science class fun for me.
  • Daniel Crichton-Rouse
'Jurassic' has two Ss and one R.

But yes, this is indeed a sad day.
  • Oh, wow. R.I.P

I love all his books. what a tragedy.

MC was the person who sparked my interest in dinosaurs and paleontology. He has fueled me to get my MD in paleontology.
  • Jurassic Park was the first "adult" novel I read: age 13. I remember poring over the pages again and again. I still remember one passage word for word:

"What Robert Trent Jones was to golf courses, Robert Muldoon is to zoos: a designer of unsurpassed knowledge and skill."

    He will be missed.
  • Ender
Holy fu--ing sh-t !!! I love his books, and am actually reading Rising Sun right now. This is completely unexpected, sad, and shocking.
  • Anomaly
Don't worry, they'll find his DNA in a mosquito and clone him, then he'll be back.

But seriously wow, what sad news. I loved reading his books when I was growing up, and this is a great loss. RIP.
  • Mikey M
