In 2003, it was announced that the Farrelly Brothers were developing a film based on The Three Stooges. They spent five years trying to make the film at Warner Bros, but for one reason or another, the film never went into production. Now, Peter and Bobby Farrelly have brought the project over to MGM, and not only is the film going into production, but they’ve announced a November 20th 2009 release date. The Three Stooges will go head to head with Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes, the animated sci-fi film Planet 51, and Disney’s Old Dogs (which opens five days later).

I use to be such a huge fan of the Farrelly Brothers. I mean, these are the same guys who directed Dumb and Dumber, There’s Something About Mary and Kingpin. But they haven’t helmed a really good film in at least 8 years (Osmosis Jones, Shallow Hal, Stuck on You, Fever Pitch, The Heartbreak Kid). The fact that the film didn’t get off the ground at Warner Bros doesn’t exactly instill faith in the project. And honestly, a Three Stooges movie just sounds like a horrible idea.

Discuss: Do you want to see a Three Stooges movie?

    no.
  • Webb
    Yes, yes I do.

I still have faith in these guys, I actually thought fever pitch worked really well. but yeah the rest of the output has been sub par.

This seems right up their alley as a return to form sort of thing. They can do slapstick better than most.

I want to see a 3 Stooges movies as much as I want a ground glass enema.
    I think I'll pass.
  • Graham
heartbreak kid was pretty terrible only good thing in that was danny mcbride.
I think this could work though
  • Serafina
I dunno... you cant really have a Three Stooges movie without the three stooges....
  • Farrelly Bros. are great, but they need a GOOD SCRIPT! The only reason Mary and Dumber were great was the script, and the script brought out great talent.

3 Stooges could be great if well scripted and CAREFULLY casted.

We'll see. I'm rooting for them.

Knowing them it'll be starring Dane Cook, Jimmy Fallon, and Frank Caliendo and a flawless blonde love interest. I honestly don't expect them to pull in top comedic talent at this point in their career. There was a time back in the 90s when Jim Carrey and Chris Farley were onboard but that time has obviously passed.

I don't want to see a 3 Stooges film but I do want to see a good Farrelly film. If this is what makes that happen then I'm there with bells on, if not it'll be just another nail in their ever-sinking filmic coffin.

Seriously can't believe Me, Myself and Irene wasn't mentioned. Movie is incredible.

i want to see a period piece three stooges drama. the story behind what really went down with the 4 of them (yes, shemp is worth mentioning) is a very sad and poignant tale of how hollywood has changed since their time - and also how 'mythic' guys like this don't end up the way we assume they would.
  • MKW
    No.
  • Goobity
    Blaspheme.
  • John
I hope they cast unknown people as the main characters...it's risky but I think it's the best. The important thing here is the script, the plot, the jokes....
  • no, i have no interest in such a movie. why ruin something like that?
  • Aaron
    With the Jonas Brothers?

Regardless of some of the lesser work, The Farrelly Brothers know how to direct comedy. When they're on the top of their game and have a great script to work with there's probably no one else alive who can stage a funny scene better than they can. There's Something About Mary and Kingpin are mindbogglingly good comedies, there's a reason Gene Siskel put them both on his top ten list of their respective years, they're modern classics. Their work since then definitely hasn't reached those heights but I think that doesn't mean it's been a series of misfires. Stuck on You is incredibly sweet and underrated and even The Heartbreak Kid, which most people seem to hate with a passion, is far more charming and energetic than most mainstream comedies (Get Smart, I'm looking in your direction). If anyone has a credible shot of making a decent Three Stooges movie, it's them. And since it seems like they're really passionate about making it and have been for years, I think they could pull it off. Or at least I hope they can pull it off.
  • charles
Yeah I want to see it but..... How is this going to work? I mean really.
  • Kenny8
Watching others play the Stooges is going to be like watching Brandon Routh trying to play Christopher Reeve.....FUTILE.

I might sit this one out, but I'm looking forward to "Abbott & Costello Meet 28 Days Later"
  • Paul
Only if the Three Stooges are in it. Otherwise, fuck you for trying to remake people. Remaking movies wasn't enough for the bastards.
  • Seth
If only Moe were alive to slap the people responsible for this...

    "Seth Says:

If only Moe were alive to slap the people responsible for this…"

    Amen.

This is an awful idea for them. Shame on you Farrelly Brothers.
  • "Hey Moe!, were going to the big screen"
  • Daniel
I want to see it. The type of humor they used in those old shorts is timeless, and sounds like it is in the perfect hands to handle it.

The only real concern for me is the setting. I think it would be ideal if it were set in the 30's like the old shorts, but that's probably just not commercially viable. More than likely, it will be set today in some way or another. Which would completely dilute it due to the fish-out-of-water scenario.

I'll see it, but there are going to be a lot of factors that will more than likely keep it from being as good as it could be.
  • Daniel
On another note, for the people saying that "Moe would slap those responsible", that's simply not true. Moe Howard recast the Stooges many times, so long that he was eventually the only original member left. Plus, he put a big stamp of approval on an animated version back in the 70's. I can't imagine that he would disapprove of this.
  • Bunterman
I loved "Stuck on You". Underrated film. My favorite part is Eva Mendes walking up, in bikini, and saying, "Hey, you guys are stuck together!"

    Greatness.
  • Sean
Didn't anyone see that horrible Three Stooges TV movie that Mel Gibson produced? Gag. I mean, this is one of the lamest ideas I have heard about since "The Birds" remake.
  • Mets
The Three Stooges are an all-time favorite with me. I know how to make the Curly laugh and Shemp's noise. So if the Farrelly brothers need someone to make the sounds, I can. nyuk nyuk nyuk
  • Mets
I didn't see my comment go up there but, I love the Three Stooges and can make the Curly laugh and Shemp's noise if the Farrelly Brothers need me.
  • danno
I'm good to go on this one.
  • I think its a good idea. The 3 Stooges type of comedy was unlike any other. I know it made me laugh hard. I look forward to this.
  • Ejiehi
Just watch the Mel Gibson "Three Stooge's" movie, for a TV movie it's great.
  • Patti Crowley
Please Please, you need my son Reilly in this movie, Really, it would be the best comic unknown actor, but he would fill the movie theaters, he's hysterical!!!!! I promise you Mr. Farrelly, you'll thank me for this tip, absolutely! Don't let someone else steal this chance, someone is GOING to notice this kid's talent and than it's going to cost you a fortune when you want him for a future project. His name is Reilly Lawless and EVERYONE says his humor is a cross between Jim Carey and Kramer from Seinfeld.
  • Hershey
HELL YEAH! I loooooove the Stooges..I grew up watching them..of course the movie may not be as great as the original 3, but it would be a great way to show the new generation some old school comic genius because thats what they are. Its time for the original kings of comedy to be payed some respect because they were waaaay ahead of their time and havent been recognized enough for it.
