Another Planet of the Apes Reboot?

According to CHUD, Fox is considering (read: probably won’t happen) relaunching the Planet of the Apes series again with a remake of the prequel Conquest of the Planet of the Apes. Referred to internally as Genesis: Apes, the script written by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver is set in modern times and tells the story of Caesar, the first talking intelligent ape who leads a campaign to unite the species and overthrow human society.

I agree that Tim Burton’s remake of the original film was a disaster, but I’m not sure going with a relaunch/prequel is a good idea either. I would rather them hire a visionary with a good sense of story to completely rewrite a film based solely on only the few core elements. I’d like to see it set only a few years in the future, just weeks after the Apes take control of our planet. I’m not really interested in seeing the uprising as much as the immediate aftermath, where the Apes and the humans are still trying to figure out this new world.

Discuss: Should Fox try rebooting Planet of the Apes? And if so, what approach should they take?

I've always been slightly confused. I thought that Burton's Planet of the Apes was good.
  • Graham
I thought the burton one was good to when it was in theaters
then I watched again recently and boy was I wrong. The make up was good I guess
  • This short answer is NO! I thought the idea that Burton had to re-imagine was good but the result just didn't work. You can't get better than the original. Planet of the Apes is something that should just be left alone.

    Burtons movie wasn't so bad...
  • dave
I agree Pete. An ape aftermath story would be more interesting. None of this genesis-how-it-came-to-be crap. Nothing that cant be explained during the opening title sequence using cliche montage footage leading us into an already established ape run modern world.

    Apes died with Heston.

ahaha, I was watching Conquest yesterday and was thinking how awesome it would to remake it. (of course, me remaking, not someone else) I love me some Planet of the Apes, but from the looks of how the other remake was done, it'll probably be bad.

    @ johnathan

i'm with you, and i guess i'm curious: to all the people who hate it, what - specifically - did you think was so bad?
  • Please no.
  • Dr.Doc
why not just finance an original science fiction film?

why do we need more remakes of anything?
  • thegaindeli
Hollywood no longer has any interest in making original films. They know that the "core" audience will show up to just out of pure curiosity! As long as the Hollywood "Hebrews" can make a profit...they're as happy as Mort Zuckerman in bagel heaven!
  • SOLID
I think it's a sad commentary on the decline in movie quality when you compare the remake to the original. All the cgi and advanced makeup tech we have now couldn't top some cheeseball 70s movie? Don't bother, hollywood. You'll just fail again.
  • movies have jumped the shark.

Here's an idea: Do something original.
  • razor1000
okay so many people complain about originality but come on give me a break, if you want something new go watch a movie that is out of your usual genres, the drama genra has some of the bes movies around and theres alwas indies. holliwood will remake as long as they can make moneu from it its just a fact of life
  • there is an offset that some remakes are actually good or at least enjoyable but no body can kill something like hollywood can in the attempts of money. There is nothing wrong with the originals just that they are set in a world before the stupid Iphone and Internet and people feel that is should be updated but for what I say some of the original good movies really break the model of time its self because they are really that good and they have an understandable theme, Just waiting for Gone with the wind remake or One of James Deans Great movies, Most likely starting James Franco (kinda resembles James Dean) I am 25 years old and I rather watch an older movie then many of the new releases for the simple fact they all seem bland and lack creativity especially the remakes. Me and my friends have written numerous scripts they all have rave reviews from many different professionals in the business, for some reason we can't find a studio to green light them but they can support Friday the 13th Part 11 or Prom Night and even The Happening? What is wrong with these studio Heads?

Here's an idea Hollywood: Brett Ratner's Planet of the Apes!
  • sleepinginflame
i loved tim's version just as much as i love the original films, i really don't understand why everyone hated it so much. and am i the only one who thought lisa marie was still hot as an ape?
  • While I agree with Dr. Doc, I didn't think Burton's was that bad. Didn't it make money? Why wouldn't they continue with the next Apes movie starring Wahlberg? I know Burton wouldn't continue with the series, but I don't see why it had to die. Same with WB kicking Singer off the Superman sequel. I think he could've really taken it somewhere.
  • I never got into the Apes franchise but I'd be interested in seeing a "how it all started" movie... just the same I think a movie where a talking monkey leads a bunch of regular monkeys might be more comedy than action/drama.
  • samir
my favorite thing in planet of the apes is the whole wormhole thing.
they should expand on that, how these guys got to this alternate reality/future.
now that would be a good sci-fi film.

  • I hope the studios get their dirty hands off this franchise

Ok, first SOLID the original Planet of the Apes was 1968, not the 70's. Second, Tim Burton's remake was horrible. If you don't know that then you were either too young to see the original when it was released, have questionable taste in films or both. Third, Burton's 'remake' (and I use that term very loosely) was only released 7 years ago. It does not need to be remade, neither do the other originals.

Is this going to be Hollywood's new trend? When they mess it up a film release they expect us to keep going back to the theater to pay for their do-over? They did this with the Incredible Hulk, now they want to do some more movies? Have they run out of Japanese films to rip off yet?

How about... maybe remake Star Wars. Maybe all six of them? Or the Godfather. Or Citizen Kane, Blade Runner, maybe Shawshank Redemption. Yeah, we'll give it a new title, maybe a music number, some colorful prison outfits for the rape scenes.... maybe Pulp Fiction could use a redo, or maybe even The Dark Knight! Yeah, I like that idea. It's not even on DVD yet, lets remake that. Give it a happy ending.

It is time to stop churning out the same old thing Hollywood. Stop trying to recapture old film glory, stop pumping sequel after sequel that pales compared to the original work. Stop dipping into Marvel and DC comics; using them as a free idea bucket and develop some new and original intellectual property. Of all the stories written over the last 6,000 years of recorded history I can't really believe that we have run out of movie potentials and are only left with having to remaking 7 year old (or younger) films.

The Burton film was so fucking horrible. It felt like just like the Lost in Space movie. The only good thing about that retarded film was Thade. The Michael Jackson make-up job on Helena Bonham Carter was a hoot too.

Burton should never do sci-fi, unless it involves goths with tools for hands.
  • Actually, I love the Tim Burton's remake of the Apes. The classic part of course the end of the film. If they want to make the sequel of the Apes, it should continue just right after that.
  • beholdmyawesome
I don't care about a remake of "Conquest", let 'em make it and fail at the box office.

I still maintain that there was/is a great movie hiding somewhere in Burton's remake. The studio's hands were all over it, and I can't think of a better contemporary example of studio meddling-- (the most egregious of all time being "Magnificent Ambersons").
  • Jonathan
I don't think any has yet to say WHY it was bad. I thought it had a good story, the acting was good and the special effects were great! So.. Yeah. I'm not comparing it to the original. I loved the original. But the new one was good too.
  • dave
What of instead they did a tv series for Sci-Fi?
  • Mayroth
I really enjoyed Burton's Planet of the Apes.

And Fox and Burton have already said that Burton's version of Apes WAS NOT A REMAKE! It was a re-imagining.
  • Oh boy!!! Another remake of a failed remake of a classic movie!

You win Hollywood. Thank God you're not thinking about creating any original movies anymore, that would be a disaster!
  • Like Dave said a tv-series would kind off work.
  • gocitizen
It's getting too tiresome to comment on all of the worthless remakes and brainless sequel ideas.

    PLEASE!
New characters. New stories. New classic films.

There were some aesthetic things I liked about Tim Burtons Apes movie, but overall I felt the movie was crap. I liked the special effects as most people who say they like this film do. But after watching the original again, it just doesnt compare in any way to the steller performance done by Heston. There were way too many things wrong with Burton's rendition to even get into.

Lets just say, let sleeping Apes lie!
  • Lenny
Yes, more Ape movies please. It should be dark, using all of the modern tricks movies can now utilize. There has to be a hot "Nova", and cool music like from the first Ape movie. I would totally go see a true, modern, same-story-exactly remake of "Planet of the Apes." Even though I know the story. I want to see a new, modern production from a great director, i.e. Cameron, or Nolan ( Batman ), and or whoever did the last T3 movie. To me the Planet of the Apes movies were very cool. Only the first two do I really watch over and over again. The first is the best by far. I don't mind re-makes. People see rock-concerts by their favorite groups over and over,..so why not movies. Don't you feel that a movie can continue to be perfected, tweaked, etc over time? I know that this generation could make a killer re-make of POTA if they wanted to. Look at Batman's resurgence, Superman's re-tooling. Come on Hollywood. Do it! p.s. I was very disappointed with the the Tim Burton re-imagineering.
  • I'm not sure if this Conquest remake will work but I am quite certain that Peter Sciretta's aftermath idea will not. Sciretta's idea is basically a 'Battle for the Planet of the Apes' remake who would really want to see that?
  • Hugues M.
I like the way tim burton's version end, it opens up so many possibilities for a sequel.
a prequel is a dum idea, just pick it up whenre tim burton left, keep mark whalberg if possible.
  • darren
i thought it was really good and would love to see a follow up

With today's budgets and CGI, someone could do a great job on these movies. Roddy McDowell was right - don't mess with perfection. Make sequels, not "re-imgaginings" or remakes! The idea of the ape/human interaction both during and immediately after the ape revolution in Conquest is a great idea and one that could be mined for a lot of potential, as it has in comic books and other medium. A really good script, actors, director, and most of all, a point, would go down well. THAT was what was missing from the Burton movie - it didn't mean anything. It had nothing to say. No real plot or point. Could have been great, but fell by the wayside. I think when Burton gets alot of money to do something like this he takes it and runs, and puts more interest in his own projects, which he is good at.
