For almost a decade, Toy Story 2 has sat as the best reviewed film of all time on Rotten Tomatoes. But no longer, James Marsh’s documentary Man on Wire has surpassed the Pixar sequel to claim the title of the best reviewed movie of all time. I have yet to see this movie, but I just added it to my Netflix queue. Amazon has the DVD available for preorder for $18.99, out on December 9th. Check out the trailer below. And you can read Magnolia’s press release after the jump.

MAN ON WIRE – THE BEST REVIEWED MOVIE OF ALL TIME!
James Marsh’s critically acclaimed doc claims top spot on Rottentomatoes.com

THE INTERNET – October 30, 2008 – After a protracted draw, Magnolia Pictures’ MAN ON WIRE finally edged out long-time record holder TOY STORY 2 to claim the coveted top spot on Rottentomatoes.com as the best reviewed film of all time: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/top/bestofrt_year.php. With its 100% positive rating over 128 reviews, MAN ON WIRE breezed past its contemporaries and now sits above such notable films as CITIZEN KANE, THE GODFATHER (parts I and II), THE WIZARD OF OZ, VERTIGO, SUNSET BOULEVARD, CHINATOWN, THE 400 BLOWS, ON THE WATERFRONT, RASHOMON, TAXI DRIVER and BEVERLY HILLS CHIHUAHUA.

“All kidding aside, we’re pretty thrilled,” said Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles. “The reception that this documentary has received from the critical community and audiences alike has been really validating. James Marsh made an incredible film of an incredible story - it’s great to see it get the recognition it deserves.”

James Marsh’s thrilling documentary about Philippe Petit’s 1974 high wire walk between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center has been a box office hit as well as a critical one: to date it’s grossed more than $2.73 million, making it one of the highest performing documentaries of 2008.

MAN ON WIRE is not the only film in the Magnolia family enjoying a stint on Rottentomatoes.com’s “best of” page. Magnet Releasing’s LET THE RIGHT ONE IN (the first film in the SIX SHOOTER FILM SERIES) is currently ranked as the best reviewed film in theaters. Additional, Chris Bell’s steroid documentary BIGGER, STRONGER, FASTER* (released theatrically by Magnolia last summer) ranks as the third-best reviewed movie recently released on DVD.

Despite rumors, Rottentomatoes.com is an unbiased entity with no ties to Magnolia Pictures or the Wagner/Cuban family.

Hmm, I guess Im out of the loop because this is the first I have heard of Man on Wire. Im gonna have to check it out now.

On a side off topic note, I clicked on the link to one of your old article, Movies That Should Have Won an Academy Award, But Didn’t and wow talk about some crazy commenters. It seemed like everyone and there mama was ganging up on you, kinda surprised all that over one post.
  • Devin: Yeah, it was a very controversial post, got linked all over, including the front page of IMDb. To be honest with you, I made some big choices which I knew would draw heat. Films which are more memorable, more entertaining, over films that might have achieved technical achievements at their time of release. The article was actually sparked over a conversation about how Citizen Kane is considered the best film of all time, but lost Best Picture. It is a crazy thought.
  • Any link on the controversy??

I've seen Man on Wire... it's great, very inspiring. It almost play's out like a heist movie.
  • Lpfanaddy
That is amazingly impressive. I really wish I had seen it the one week it was in my city :\

Tommy, that's exactly how it plays out. Like a heist movie. It was a great documentary, but frankly it isn't one of my favorite films of the year. Very well done, and I did enjoy it, but it is NOT the best movie ever. The tomatoe meter is good for gathering a concensus, and deciding on whether a movie is worth seeing. It is not useful in determining the overall greatness of a movie from amoung its peers. A movie with a higher tomatometer is basically well made, but also more widely accessible than one with a lower meter rating.

Cant wait to see it and i know one is a movie and the other is a documentary but Pulp Fiction > Man on Wire!

I really want to see this one, the poster definetely takes the breath away..........

Over Beverly Hills Chihuaha?? I cant believe it!!!!! (of course, a little bit of sarcasm)..........
  • Ghost
Definitely a good film, I was surprised at how good it was.
  • Hah, although the movie is very entertaining I completely agree with Jonathan. Frankly, I don't even think it's worth seeing in theaters. Does that make it a poor movie? Of course not, but in my opinion I would hope the greatest movie ever would take full advantage of a theater experience through surround sound and a larger then life visual presentation. The climax of this film is nothing more then still pictures with narration and because it's a documentary the surround experience is less then stellar.

  • This is... it doesn't seem right. The "Best" is the movie with 100% that has been reviewed the most times. Hardly seems reliable.... Shouldn't it be the 100% movie with the highest Average Rating? Yes.
  • Jamie
    Thanks for the heads up.

    I hadn't seen this.

    couple of things

    A. does anyone at slash film ever see the movies that are blogged about? i always read "I have yet to see this movie, but I just added it to my Netflix queue" on tons of posts here

    B. why do you think any of us would care that you are adding it to your queue? just write about the movie
  • Jamie:

    A. I see 50 new movies a month. But yes, we miss some of them.

    B. Its a blog silly. Plus its a way of saying, while I havent seen the film and can't attest to its quality personally, I've heard great things about it, and I'm going to check it out, maybe you should too.
  • Chuck Norris can do that blinfolded and do it backwards...twice!

On a serious note...i give that guy mad props!
  • Hahahah, was my comment edited? Seriously? I might be loosing more and more respect for this site with each passing day.
