Fox Searchlight has mastered the art of releasing small art house films. They understand that it is important to build good word of mouth as they slowly expand into more and more markets. And one of the ways they do this (aside from having great films) is by holding nationwide free screenings. They did it with Napoleon Dynamite. They did it with Little Miss Sunshine. And the release of Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire is no different. /Film eader Mitch pointed me towards a listing of 44 screenings which will take place throughout November, leading all the way up to Christmas. RSVP now for your chance to attend.

PLEASE READ THIS FIRST: If you don’t RSVP on the Fox Searchlight website, you will not get in. If it says SOLD OUT, do not show up at the theater hoping to get in, because you won’t. And even if you do RSVP on their website, it does not guarantee a seat. They overbook these screenings to ensure a packed house. Promotional screenings are on a first-come, first-served basis and not guaranteed seating. Seating is limited to theater capacity. My advice is if you are lucky enough to be one of the thousands of people to get a free ticket, show up AT LEAST one hour early, if not more, to ensure you get a seat.

If you’re wondering when Slumdog Millionaire is opening in a city near you, please consult the roll-out release listing in our previous trailer posting.

I tried to do this with Sunshine a year and a half ago in Chicago, but sadly I didn't know how to do it and didn't show up early enough. They MASSIVELY overbook, so make sure you RSVP and show up super early. I don't know if this is how it usually works, but when I went, a bunch of radio stations, groups, and websites had tickets they were giving out to "winners." Those winners weren't very serious about it though, so I befriended/begged a radio station intern, and both my friend and I got in without an RSVP (and got to meet Mr. Boyle, himself!!). So if something happens and it looks like you can't get in, try to find someone like that around, and maybe you'll still have hope!
  • wow, nothing in Chicago, the third most populous city in the country?

I don't even know why they do these types of screenings. They just annoy a lot of people. Seventy percent of the people on line get turned away and it is just a lot of tsuris .

Anyone from a studio marketing department want to shed some light on these fiascoes? I've even seen filmmakers get upset at how poorly these screenings are run.
  • Jamie: they do these type of screenings before they work at building strong word of mouth. Worked extremely well for both napoleon dynamite and little miss sunshine. Fox Searchlight usually does 3 or 4 screenings per market, which gives anyone who knows about them a good chance to attend. If you show up early, you get in, its not a problem. its the inconsiderate people who show up 15-30 minute before the screening that get turned away. And no, I have rarely if ever seen 70% get turned away. A theater seats 300 people, that means that another 200 get turned away? doesnt happen. I've also seen some studios open up a second theater when there is such a huge response. But they usually only do this is they can fill another whole theater. Again, things could be different depending on the city you live in. I assume a big metropolis like New York City might have more people waiting in line for these things.

PLEASE have one in or near Chicago. I live about an hour away from Chicago but I would definitely make the drive for the movie.

Either way I can't wait for the film, it looks great.
