For Your Consideration: WALL-E

Earlier this week, we told you that Disney would be pushing WALL-E for a Best Picture nomination. I just happened along the first advertisement over on the Hollywood trade-paper websites.

  • Sean
    wall-e isnt best picture material
  • Garrett
Are you on drugs? Why isn't it Best Picture material? Because it is animated? Get off your high horse.
  • Andrew
when is the final date that we find out what all it's been nominated for?
  • A.J.
    @Sean

    yes. yes it is.
  • joelnstuff
Wall-E is one of the best films to come out this year, why shouldn't it at least be pushed for a best pic nom. I'd be happy to see it as one of the 5 films up for best pic.
  • Quan
    No chance.
  • @ Sean

    name 5 better this year?
  • optimusprime
If Wall-E can get Best Picture Nomination, then The Dark Knight should.
  • Joe
Best movie I've seen this year in a meager Oscar crop.

I wouldn't write it off entirely, but I'll laugh my ass off if we see Wall-E win Best Actor.

(In my opinion, Wall-E > TDK. It was good, but not THAT good. And yes I did see it in IMAX.)
  • Presto117
    @ Joe

    agree 100%

I loved Wall-E to death and it's my favorite movie this year.

I hate to admit it, but I even liked it better than Toy Story (toy story's been my absolute favorite movie since i was 5, which was the first time i saw it. it was also the first movie i saw in theaters)

it's just so great to see how much Pixar has grown and this movie got me very emotional and I think it deserves an oscar nomination.
  • reed
Wall-e was great, but I don't think it was near Pixar's best, and I don't want it to win when movies like Finding Nemo or Toy Story didn't. Plus, did anyone else see it more than once? Rewatchability is very low for Wall E (the beeps become very annoying). Not true for most Pixar films.
  • Brian
Wall.E is brilliant. The first thing i said, after I saw it was, "Movie of the year."

The Dark Knight is great, even fantastic but Wall.E is brillant.
  • Diego
    Wall-E Best motion picture!!! Yesssssssssssss!!!
  • James
    Go Wall-E!

Good to see it being nominated for best picture!
    It deserves it!
  • Henry Jones Jr
Wall-E is not even close to Best Picture material. Over-hyped and over-rated.
  • david
wall-e is easily my favourite film of the year, and i think it should stand a chance of at least getting a nomination. i doubt anyone could seriously name 5 better films to have come out (so far) in 2008.
  • ilves
Will never win best picture, but having it nominated would be nice.
  • Zinc
    Fuck. That.
  • Daniel
Sorry Walle, you weren't that good.
  • BCS
Just because WALL-E is a cutesy movie about spaceships and robots everybody online seems to think it somehow deserves Best Picture consideration.
  • Wall•E Plays Pong
I'm embarrassed for sensible Sean's everywhere who have their name tainted by people like the first commenter, or that ape Hannity.

Out of all the Pixar films made, I would say Toy Story, Ratatouille, and Wall-E are Best picture worthy, regardless of personal favorites. There's a quality of storytelling and emotional resonance there largely unseen in many current live action films, and on par with the best live action films.

When looked at as a whole, the fact Pixar could conjure up a character who can barely speak, is a robot, is purely digital, and still gave him a soul while creating a cohesively made story that has relevance to social and environmental problems of our times while remaining timeless and with universal appeal AND included a robot playing pong is no small feat, and worthy of best picture nomination.

FUCK YES Wall-E for nomination, plus an extra fuck in there just to make it clear for those who need four letter words to express themselves.
  • Emma
Oh hell no. I feel like I'm the only person who realizes what utter shit Wall-E was. This movie wasn't the best movie all year, or the best Pixar movie; it was a giant step backwards for Pixar and a massive disappointment. If Wall-E wins, the Academy is even more screwed up then we thought.
  • Anomaly
    @Emma
"I feel like I’m the only person who realizes what utter shit Wall-E was."

Your opinion is not fact, please do not treat it as such. Sorry if you're not actually considering it fact, the tone of the post makes it seem that way.
  • gocitizen
Wall-e is a work of art and, as such, should be nominated among the best films of 2008.
I realize that not everyone will value the remarkable creativity and accomplishment of the film, but to deny it's achievement is willfully missing the ball.

While other studios continue to give us sequels and remakes, Pixar continues to risk, create, and succeed in crafting unique and "classic" films that will be around for generations. Wall-e steps up the game and deserves this high level of recognition.
  • gocitizen
Another way to look at the Best Picture category is to evaluate a film on the sum of its parts:
    Direction
    Writing
    Editing
    Art Direction
    Acting
    Score
    Sound Design

In all of these categories, Wall-e is among the best of films released in the first 10 months of 2008.
  • Locall
I LOVED Wall-E (seen it 3 times already), don't know if it should win the Best Film Oscar though. It should deffo win the best animated award, cuz from what I've seen this year's animation films were crap, where did the magic go? Wall-E was the only one who had it for me :(
  • TheOpinionator
Of course it should be nominated!!! It's by far one (if not the) best movie of the year. Someone said...if wall-e is nominated so should Batman....I don't think you have to worry about that;)

Anyone who says Wall-E sucks, or that it's utter shit, knows absolutely nothing about good film making...and yes...I say that as a fact! I wouldn't be surprised if you in the same sentence, said that Uwe Boll was an awesome director.
  • Fidel
For all you Wall-E haters out there, don't worry: Madagascar 2 comes out this Friday just for you!
  • sbones
You know what? I agree with you when you said that you don't want WALL-E to win when other Pixar films didn't. I definitely think Finding Nemo was better than WALL-E. Finding Nemo was amazing! (a lot of Pixar's movies are awesome) And I definitely think WALL-E wasn't Pixar's best either. I didn't think the movie was bad or anything, I just didn't like it that much. I don't know why. I guess the characters/storyline just weren't for me. I'm all for an animated picture to win Best Picture if it's worthy, but this year, I don't think WALL-E should win.
  • Gary
Wall-e should be nominated, and so far should win Best Art Direction.
