Columbia Pictures’ is remaking Berry Gordy’s 1985 cult classic martial arts film The Last Dragon. Samuel L Jackson will star as the film’s villain - Sho’nuff, the Shogun of Harlem, a character played by Julius Carry in the original film.

Set in New York City, the story follows a black teenage martial arts student and aspiring martial artist named Leroy Green, who goes on a quest to achieve The Final Level and a mystical energy called The Glow. On his way to becoming The Last Dragon, he must confront villians like a crooked arcade mogul named Eddie Arkadian and the evil Sho’nuff (Jackson).

Aspects of the film have been incorporated into modern day hip hop culture. Dallas Jackson, who heads up the urban family label DJ Classicz, is writing the script. Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA is co-producing.

Jack’s character, Sho’nuff was known for asking questions like “Am I the baddest mofo lowdown around this town?” His gang members would answer, “Sho ’nuff!”

this is a movie that was made in the 80's for a reason it wont work now
  • duval
while i do enjoy Samuel Jackson's acting , i'm getting tired of hollywood recycling the same four black actors. Time for new faces.
  • marz
i think jackson is the perfect actor for that part.now as for leroy i hope they actualy cast someone who knows martial arts and not just taught it in a few months.
  • bnitro
Didn't really love the first one so... SHO NUFF!
  • Mag
Bruce lee has been dead for 30 years....whats this movie about again?
  • kip
as long as they get some young black actor to break dance out of ropes...they're getting my eight bucks. Best movie ever. Blu Ray please.
  • Bones Rodriguez
    HI-FREAKIN-'LARIOUS
  • QUI
    HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! LOL
  • During its original theatrical run a matinee showing in Philly (on Easter Sunday if memory serves correct) resulted in a horde of teens clogging Chestnut Street kung fuing their way past cars, trash cans, pedestrians and shoppers. Now THAT is a movie!
  • grave dohl
You have GOT to be shitting me right?!? And then what, Beyoncé as the Apollonia character?! This is as pointless a remake as any of the other pointless remakes out there. Loved the original, it was so campy it made it fun. Watch it now though and it's just flat out laughable. Wtf are they gonna do in a 'modern hip hop version'? Seriously, Sam Jackson is cool and everything, but Julius Carry is going to turn in his grave if they do this. Please Sam, stick to the Afro Samurai and leave the Shogun of Harlem alone!!!
  • Anrkist
They are done remaking all the blockbusters... now they are moving into my cult classic territory... meh.
  • Joe
As long as Usher isn't Bruce Leroy, it should be fine..
  • Azure Trayl
THIS IS SO AWESOME! I wouldn't have it any other way. When you think of one bad mo'fo, you think of Samuel Jackson. I'm so behind this and look forward to it.
  • zero1
If Samuel Jackson doesn't have the afroriffic hair I am finna be pissed.
  • WillyK
This is going to suck. Crazy I tell you. No wai!
  • REAL6
    TERRY CREWS!!!

    Plus dont remake this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Looked this movie... cant wait
  • meant to say Loved not Looked....
  • Steelo
I'm torn. On one hand that's real nice. On the other that's like reinventing water.
  • INS
hmmm agree that this movie was great because of the 80s and now cant say it will work....the cheesy arcade villain, the crazy fits, the loser villains he beat up in the club, asian fortune cookie cats, and the MUSIC!!!

Hip Hop version will probably be another shitty DMX/Jet Li/Ja Rule/Segal type action movie...

But yea, Samuel as Sho'Nuff is a cool choice. 'Yeah they derserved to die, and I hope they burn in HELL!!!!' 'Why am I always yelling in my movies!?!?!'
  • They should use RZA or Robert Rodriguez for the music score.
  • Eric R.
    Ummm....why????
  • charles
I don't think Sam's performance can stand up to Julius.
  • Dammit!! Enough with the remakes already!!!!
  • Hupp
fantastic, although i would rather have a sequel i cannot complain!
  • amazing.. i wonder how they're going to redo the cool light effects at the end.. heh
  • Kokushi
Get Tony Jaa to use Kirk Lazarus method acting!
  • tyrone breaux
i could play leroy...seriously i've been in martial arts my whole life i've seen the movie and i can act
  • Goro
I'm down with a LAST DRAGON remake as long as they use The Glow song! :)

I think there's a decent chance for some fun with this, but while i totally see SJ as performing the attitude of Sho 'Nuff, i really don't see him executing any great fight choreography.

    Who's gonna be Bruce Leeroy?
  • luvbruce
I think they should go with someone like Pooch Hall from the tv show "The Game". He has a background in boxing and martial arts, he's young, fresh, hip, up and coming, he has a fan base and is extremely talented.
  • whatever
BRING TAIMAK BACK. HE NEEDS THE WORK.
  • korin
Sam Jack is WAAAY too old to play Sho Nuff. This is a young people's story. The target audience is teens and young adults. They really need to give some new stars a chance. What about Anthony Mackie?

LOVE this movie. A hip hop update is a fantastic idea, or it would be if hip hop was still good. But I have to say I trust RZA's judgment.
  • Mikey M
I am getting tired of Samuel Jackson acting the same in all his movies.
  • Lenny
    No!No!No!No!No!No!No!No!No!No!No!No!No!No!No!No!No!No!No!No!No!
Another of my favs to be ruined. This and Poltergeist really do not need to be remade. I can get into some other updates but it's ridiculous when the movie was awesome as is.

The new trend of acquiring rights to forgen movies and burying them to do Hollywood remakes is really pissing me off! I want to see the original of Let the Right One In not some Americanized crap...

and I'm not allowed to see Paranormal Activity because some hack is going to remake it with a big budget for the masses??Bullshit!
  • TheGuyInThePJ's
Horrible Idea. Don't get me wrong... I'm a whore for anything 80's, but this film needs no remake. The reason why the film works til this day is the camp factor. If you remake the film in present day it doesn't work. If you remake the film as a period piece thats set in the 80's, then you're setting yourself up for failure because you can't top the original. It'a really a lose-lose situation.
  • joey
what's next? road house remake directed by brett ratner?
  • edog
    @ Lenny

I agree on all counts. Burying well-received foreign films is only going to contribute to piracy -- if we want to see a movie, we'll find a way.
  • edc
let the corpse fucking cool down before recasting and remaking.
or maybe we should remake cool hand luke with shia?
  • edc
    this just in..
a remake of the remake of the day the earth stood still is being made - director lars von der smütt tells mtv; "we saw the five minute trailer and it was so five minutes ago, we wanted to update it for a younger audience" keanu reeves will cameo as the general who believes nick jonas' alien is a threat.
  • I remember that film being a lot of fun, but a remake? COME on. I also think Jackson would show up at your kids birthday party if you paid him. He's way overexposed!
  • DJR
Hell the only reason I have a smile because of this is the inevitable remastered DVD of the original that is sure to be released in time for the remake.
  • the amazing null
i wonder if they waited for Julius Carry's body to cool before casting sam to desecrate it? i bet not.
  • carg0
    no. f@&*ing. way.

    o_O
  • 90210 typa-of-hoe!
Like I said before.Every movie or everything I use to like as a kid ...........the legacy of it has been pissed on. From Teenage mutant ninja turtles remake, to the grinch, to the new muppet movie/fraggle rock movie to the thundercats to transformers to the star wars prequels to the new friday the 13th , nightmare on elmstreet , alien vs. predator movies and Charlie and the chocolate factory destroyed how i look at them.

I guess the wizard of oz is next!
