Sam Mendes to Direct Preacher

Good news for comic book fans. It looks like Preacher might finally make its way to the big screen. Columbia Pictures has picked up the rights to adapt the series into a feature film, with American Beauty/Road to Perdition director Sam Mendes attached to helm the project.

Preacher has a long history of false starts, despite having a loyal following among geek filmmakers. Originally set-up at Kevin Smith’s View Askew with a $25 million budget and James Marsden attached as the title character, the project fell into limbo and later found light as an HBO television series helmed by Mark Steven Johnson (fans were not happy about this one). When the one-hour series was first announced in November 2006, Pretty in Pink director Howard Deutch was named to helm the pilot episode. Robert Rodriguez was said to be one of the “many top-shelf directors interested in” directing an episode of the series. I have yet to read the series, but from what I understand, most fans saw it more as a television mini-series than a big screen movie.

The official plot synopsis from the graphic novel follows: “Here’s a book guaranteed to offend a bunch of people, not only because of its profuse profanity and graphic violence, but because it’s the epitome of iconoclasm. Like a brutal accident, you can’t watch but you can’t turn away. The story follows an ex-preacher man, Jesse, who has become disgusted with God’s abandoning of His responsibilities. So Jesse starts off into the wilds of Texas with his hitman girlfriend and new best friend (a vampire) to find God so that he can give Him a piece of his mind. Despite its superficial perversity, this book contains what may be the most moral character in mainstream comics. A cult hit in the making. Fans of Quentin Tarantino take note.”

The 75 issue comic book series was created by writer Garth Ennis and artist Steve Dillon, and published between 1995 to 2000.

I like this director. But the thing is, Preacher has so much content and backstory. That I find it hard to see it pushed into one movie.

It's why I loved the idea of it being an HBO series.

    Jesse Custer - James Marsden
    Cassidy - Sam Rockwell
    Tulip - Charlize Theron
  • I'm liking the choice of Sam Mendes, but given all the false starts this thing has had, I won't believe it until it starts shooting and I certainly have questions about how they're going to fit 75 issues of story into the movie without totally butchering it. I'm not saying it's impossible, but it's going to be tough and since I really enjoyed the comics, I have my concerns.

I would prefer a cable series, but at least we can somewhat trust this director. Dunno which story arc they'd go with for a movie (if they'd just do the first arc, they could set it up for sequels, but I personally don't see Hollywood doing 5 or 6 of these to tell the whole story).

And I don't see any of those people listed above as being right for those parts.

Oh my god! This is such good news for me. I love the Preacher comic series and I love Sam Mendes too! I think there's only one thing to say....WOOT!
  • Lee
a 5 season Showtime or HBO show would have been so much better. I just don't see why cutting out all of the content from this comic run is worth it in order to squeeze out a 2 hour movie. The best part about this series was the ride, the characters interacting and the crazy shit that happened. I really don't think I would have felt the same way about Preacher if it had just been a 4 part limited series.

The only way to really appreciate the depth of Preacher would be to film a cable show. This just takes the fun out of Ennis' work.

    @NElson
I'm sorry but James Marsden as Custer? Its pretty evident you didn't read Preacher.

    @Reggies
No one who actually read Preacher would say 'woot'.
  • Aqualeo
I'm on the 8th book now. love it. i can not imagine how they are going to make this even a 3 hour movie. can't wait.
  • Captain Awesome
Chris Evans would make a great Jesse. After seeing him in Sunshine. The guy has good acting chops and the face for Custer.
  • Nawid Ahrary
I don't see it as good news but whatever.

NO COMPROMISES at all must be made with this, in order for it to be successful. none at all! i don't know if a hollywood film can do that, but i had hoped hbo or showtime would've been able to do it right - dexter is pretty damn darkly amazing.

john constantine was already sacrificed to the demons of the visual medium...must the same happen to our beloved cast of preacher?!?!
  • Ghost
I honestly think Barry Pepper would make a really good Cassidy over Sam Rockwell and most ppl out there.

I always thought of Sean Penn as Jesse though. And a younger Patricia Arquette as Tulip circa True Romance era.

I totally agree with NELSON except for THERON, she would be a huge miscast! I like that Mendes is doing it but I still think it would work better as a mini series but at-least Mark Steven Johnsons name is off it!
  • somethingawful
    Jesse Custer: Skeet Ulrich
    Cassidy: Michael Fassbender
    Tulip: Katee Sackhoff
    Saint of Killers: Lance Henriksen

You have to do this as multiple films. Watchmen should have been done that way too. Plus it means more money for the studio.
  • Mendes certainly wasn't the first person who came to mind when I thought comic book adaptation (but he did do an excellent job with Road to Perdition). This really makes me excited.
  • Ben
Peter (and everyone else) - read Preacher. Make it a priority. It's fantastic.
  • @Nelson - perfect except for Tulip - someone younger (sorry) umm...a blonde Eliza Dushku (just because chances are high for a topless scene)

Marsden should be a much bigger star than he is now.

Though if Mendes went older then Tim Roth as Cassidy then you can have Theron as Tulip and maybe a thinner, slightly younger Michael Madsen...I always pictured the comic alot more gritty but for Hollywood its gotta to sell to the kids.
  • I'd be excited except I know that this will probably never happen. How many times have we heard about PREACHER being a movie or a TV show now?
  • Anti-Septic
Whoever mentioned Skeet Ulrich, I must say I agree. He can bring intensity to this project.

A big fan of his work!
  • Khory
I don't know how i feel about this. I'm really excited yet i feel that this would make such a better series than a movie. There is to much going on through out the whole series for them to stuff it into a couple hours with out destroying the whole thing. But i have to admit i am very anxious to see how this plays out!

OK I'm glad they're still talking about a Preacher adaptation. Though I think a lot would prefer a miniseries, a highly successful movie would open up doors for a miniseries in the future. As for who would play Jesse, I say Sam Rockwell. Very underrated actor. Or Edward Norton if they could get him. For Tulip, I'd say Brea Grant, the fast chick on Heroes. Full of spunk that lady. As for Cassidy, I'd say a little known actor named Leo Gregory. Look him up. You'll agree.
  • Agony
Leo Gregory as Cassidy and Brea Grant as Tulip definitely look the parts, though I haven't seen them in anything. Best idea I've seen for Jesse so far is Jason Patrick. And Lance Henrickson as the Saint would be awesome.

Even though it'd be a draw for the movie, I think casting bigger names like Colin Farrell or Edward Norton would be a big mistake. Sam Rockwell is interesting, but I'm just not sure which part he'd really fit.

And I'm sorry, but James Marsden is awful.
  • shitgazer
    shia lebouf for arseface.
  • Captain Awesome
    lol @ shitgazer
  • DJR
For all of the horrible shit that goes down in this series, there is NO way this could even be an R rated movie. Hell I think NC-17 would have trouble containing it.

Let alone all of the Christians that would have a hurricane sized shit fit when the found out the story.
  • scarcat
i think either a young micheal madeson for jesse....(otherwise olderhe would be perfect for his dad)
otherwise how about jaquin pheonix, moody sexy and a certain moral integrity old time southern grit thing going on- think walk the line

Star should definatley be played by ben kingsley

tulip I dont know... maybe someone completely new
  • superfly
How can i get a job working on that set????? I'm a film student and a huge fan of Preacher. Would be awesome.
  • abu
The guy who manages Arseface should be played by Matthew Mcconaughey ha ha ha ha ha!
  • Adam Richman
Please, please, please make this into a series.

And please, please, please let me write one episode.

    Adam Richman
Host of Travel Channel's Man v. Food
