Fantastic list. I love finding out what good directors are into.
  • May
    wow, what a shocking list.
  • A.J.
I would say "awesome list" but I'm pretty sure that any fan of movies would have the exact same list. I know I would. I know I'm not the only one who loves each of those movies, however, It's nice to know that one of my many favorite directors likes all the same movies I do. weird.
  • andrew
it is surprising to see Year of Living Dangerously, Days of Heaven, and Paper Moon.

I like all of those films but they are definitely not on every movie fans top films list.
  • orange cinema
solid stock answers for all, I wanna see the next 20
  • Adam
nothing on that list is particularly surprising,
  • All good movies but can't say that most of them are in my favorites.

What's the deal with the lack of backstory on the list? /film just throwing it out there eh.
  • Tommy: remember that Empire top 500 movies of all time list that we posted a few weeks ago, a bunch of directors contributed to the poll. Fincher was one of them. That is where the list came from. I'm not sure what other directors contributed lists, as I have yet to see the issue. Unfortunately, Empire has not included this material online.
  • Tarantino, Edgar Wright, Rian Johnson, Roger Deakins, Uwe Boll (he had Postal), Louis Letterier, Mike Leigh, Kevin Feige, Cameron Crowe and more. I would suggest picking up the issue theres many a nugget within.
  • Gajonka
this is a very GENERIC LIST. YOU CAN FIND THESE FILMS IN ANY TOP 50 LIST COMPILES BY ANYONE. NOTHING SPECIAL HERE, I LIKE THE INCLUSION OF JAWS, BEING THERE, (ESPECIALLY), AND ROAD WARRIOR. BUT OVERALL, VERY WEAK, UN-CREATIVE AND REALLY GENERIC.

    NEXT!
  • Steelo
    yeah that seems about right
  • How is one to bitch about the predictibility of an all-time greatest film list. What are you supposed to try and be original and pick things off the beaten path? It's a great list. I love that Bob Fosse's "All That Jazz" is on there too, cause that's a gem that a lot of people don't seem to appreciate. Highly recommended if you haven't seen.
  • @Gajonka. Again: a ridiculous argument.
  • Nikolai
all the presidents men ... zodiac
    alien ... alien 3

+ most of the movies are from the 70s and one can sense that distinct hazy atmosphere in his movies, wide shots, etc

great to see where he's coming from tho + great list
  • Oh, and I suppose you people are "creative" coming on here to bash his list as "obvious"...??? If he would've went w/ lesser known choices you would have asked how he could've left out Godfather 2, Citizen Kane, Alien, etc. Point is, they are HIS top 20 movies...not yours! Let it go.

BTW, some excellent choices. He forgot to mention The Happening though (lol).
  • the last bampf
wow, he likes jaws and citizen kane. that explains so much. don't stare at that list too long. the brilliance of it may drive you stark raving mad.
  • Josh
I know the man directed it... but where the hell is Fight Club?
  • "Animal House
    Road Warrior"

In my mind, at first, I read this as Road House! Bummer that wasn't it... ;)
  • Come on he's not gonna list his own film and if he did everyone would be calling him a douche for it.
  • J
Awesome list, you know a guy like him would have great taste in movies.
  • vader182
These are all fine movies, but what would anyone expect? Any big fan of movies would have to name at least a healthy portion of these. Wow, I love that man though, so maybe I'm just bias.
  • no Se7en or Fight Club?
    Lame.

In all seriousness, David Fincher is one of my top 3 directors of all time, and I love this list, because I fully agree with it.
  • Mr. 62
What's wrong with the original Godfather? It was better than number 2!
  • You can tell Fincher's fondest memories are attached to films from the 70's -- but if you ask me: Fincher's list might be more complete if he were to: watch the many great films from the 40's and 50's and perhaps dabble into some international cinema. Kudos for including Zelig!
  • glucas
meh. those are all great films no doubt.
it reads like an internet forums greatest list.
  • Billy
As someone said this is taken from the latest Empire magazine. They have these lists for a few dozen filmmakers, producers, writers etc. The funniest is Uwe Bolls, who placed Postal in tenth position below the likes of Raging Bull and Taxi Driver.
  • Captain Awesome
    Gajonka,

    Die in a house fire.
  • Gajonka
yES, VERY GENERIC, NOT AS BAD AS CAPTAIN AWESOME'S LIST. THAT IS JUST FRESHMAN! POOR GUY!
  • VegaBro
Peter. Where the hell did this list come from?
  • Vega: read my previous comment above. Also, there is a via link at the bottom of the post
  • No respect for the first Godfather? C'mon Fincher. No Pulp Fiction? Probably doesn't wanna give Tarantino any respect. Good list though. I'm glad Chinatown is that high.
  • IronMatt
    Days of Heaven.

Not enough people have seen this movie.
  • 90210 typa-of-hoe!
what can you say the man learned from the classics
  • Detective Comic
@Gajonka who the hell do you think you are?? The man has taste in movies unlike you who probably woulda chose some shit like transformers or old school! Get some Culture ya' prick!!!!!!!!
  • The Gajonka
detective boy: YOU HAVE NO CLUE, DO YOU? PLEASE , FETCH YA SHINEBOX BOY, AND SHINE EM UP!

    "i HAVEN'T KILLED ANYONE. SINCE 1984."
