Disney Pushes WALL-E For Best Picture Nomination

This week Disney will launch a campaign to get WALL-E nominated for the Best Picture Oscar, an award never won by an animated film. Only one animated film has ever had the honor to be nominated in the Best Picture category, Disney’s 1991 film Beauty and the Beast. The Academy launched a Best Animated feature category in 2001, which has complicated matters for end of the year Award campaigns.

A film can be nominated for both Best Picture and Best Animated Feature, but pushing for the big award could split votes. In other words, Academy members might not vote for WALL-E in both categories, and the Best Picture push could result in a loss for the Best Animated Feature category. Walt Disney Studios Richard Cook tells the New York Times: “If we didn’t do it, I don’t think we’d be giving the movie its due.” Thanks to /Film reader Wall-E Plays Pong for the tip.

Discuss: Does WALL-E really have a chance to win Best Picture? Could Pixar grab a Best Picture Nomination?

  • Brian
it is definitely good enough for a best picture oscar
  • I'm all for it -- if people are as-serious about DARK KNIGHT getting Oscar nods as they claim to be, then WALL-E definitely is in the discussion.
  • Adriel
Yes, I believe WALL-E can get AT LEAST a nomination for Best Picture. The film is moving and the film has a very high level of art. The script is well-written and the visual is simply breathtaking. It's also very original ranging from its design, characters, setting to the plot itself. Adored by both critics and audience, young and old, WALL-E is absolutely the best picture of the year.
  • David
I personally dont believe Ive seen a movie better than it this past year, but then again im not voting =\
  • Brian
Sounds good! Haven't seen it yet, but I already know it's better than The Dark Knight which I've seen a couple of times.
    Disney Pixar = awesome always.

I hope this doesn't start a trend though...Dark Knight, then WALL E, what's next? The Hulk?
  • Harry Lime
I really hate the Best Animated Feature category because it marginalizes films like Wall-E and Ratatouille as if they are lesser films than their live-action counterparts (which often feature tons of computer-generated visual effects anyway). I think Wall-E might have a shot at nomination, but zero chance for a Best Picture win, even with the unappetizing slate of movies coming out this awards season.
  • Delta Assault
I doubt it'll happen, because there's a Best Animated Film category. It's like if there was a Best Superhero Film category, Dark Knight wouldn't get into Best Picture.
  • Hector N
    Thank god you're not voters
  • @Brian

Maybe in your opinion Wall-E is better than The Dark Knight but until you've seen both you shouldn't really decide. I think there two of the best films of the year easily though.
  • I loved Wall-E and Dark Knight both on an aesthetic and entertainment level. Both well-made *and* mass-consumable. In theory, doesn't this a."best picture" make?

That said, if Dark Knight is nominated, Wall-E should be considered, too. I wouldn't necessarily say the same vice versa.
  • JT
With this year's Oscar crop being so small, and the recent pushbacks of Defiance, The Road and The Soloist, Disney probably realized they could have something on their hands with Wall-E.

And also, I've seen a dozen movies in theaters this year, and WALL-E was easily the best.
  • Daniel
I may get slammed for saying this, but I think Wall-E is a much better film than Dark Knight. And I'm still one of those Dark Knight fanboys.

Both of these films are exactly the types that would have been nominated around fifteen or more years ago before the Academy got all snooty. I don't think movies like Star Wars (New Hope) or Raiders of the Lost Ark would ever be nominated if they were released now.

But Wall-E has that special something. It's a crowd pleaser, critical darling, and it just strikes that certain tone that a very few films attain. The only comparison in tone and quality that I can think of is E.T. It's a masterful film that deserves to be recognized as such, and the bone thrown by the Best Animated category isn't enough to do it.
  • MrMad2001
I wouldn't be surprised if this hour long Ipod commercial won. I liked the movie, but am saddened there are so few movies that are good enough to contend this year.
  • Brian
    David,

Just watched Walle, and yes just as I've known of every single Pixar film to come out...it was golden.
Dark Knight = trash. It was just as bad as Batman Begins. Nolan should be revoked the ability to use anything Batman related.

So if it gets in, Walle deserves to get in and win.
  • Brian
Anyways, the Academy members wouldn't know a good film if it smacked them in the face. Pompous, foolish in the name of film. Oscars are not only overrated but do not EVER reflect on the season of film. Let's not even get started on how much better independent films are when compared to Oscar winners.
  • matt
i too agree that wall-e should get a best picture nomination. if there is all this consideration for the dark knight, then why not wall-e. in my opinion, wall-e is much better than the dark knight.
  • Marko
I think it does have a chance of being nominated. Aside from Beauty and the Beast which was nominated, has a studio ever tried making a deliberate effort to get an animated film to be nominated for best picture?
  • AJ
It won't split votes. Only the animation branch nominates Best Animated Picture while every branch nominates Best Picture.
  • I guess I'm in the minority when I say that I really didn't think Wall-E was all that great. I enjoyed it. It certainly had the Pixar quality. I just didn't love it. I certainly didn't think it was the best that Pixar has put out to date.
  • vader182
    Do it!
  • reed
Eh... I liked Wall-E, but I don't think it's quite best picture material. I don't even think it's best Pixar Movie material, and I would rather Pixar come out with a better movie and then win, if great movies like Finding Nemo (far superior Wall E) don't get a nod. I loved it, don't get me wrong, and Disney Pixar has never let me down. But I really don't think Wall E should get it. Having said that, the academy has gotten snobbish about nominating popular movies, and it would be interesting to see TDK and Wall E up for some big awards, because they were both great.
Having said that, someone earlier both slammed Dark Knight and Batman Begins as awful, which is treason! They were incredible movies, the both of them.
  • Suess
I barely think about the fact that it's animated. The Academy simply can't deny that WALL-E is an excellent piece of filmmaking. Forget the issues it addresses, though those should be a plus for the Academy; it tells the story almost entirely visually, and thus in my opinion one of the purest films in the mainstream in years.

And I personally think this has a better chance than Beauty and the Beast because it's not a musical. I feel like animated movies have been moving slowly forward since they dropped the songs, and have already made their first step when Ratatouille got nominated for Best Original Screenplay.
  • A.J.
It can definitely get a nomination. I'm sure about that. Hell, because of its subtext, it might just win.
  • If the Oscars were held today, I'd say it would be the frontrunner. When the final nominations come out, I doubt it will get a BP nod. But it's definitely a lock for Best Animated Feature but it may have a tougher time getting a screenplay nod as its first half hour is nearly free of dialogue.
  • Captain Awesome
If Diablo Cody can get an Oscar. ANYONE can get an Oscar.
  • gocitizen
Wall-e deserves that recognition. I love that the animated category gives more animated films some love, but it has segregated films that deserve Best Picture nominations. We are extremely lucky to have Pixar putting out classic films. They should be honored as such.

Wall-e meets every criteria. It's a beautiful film and a work of art.
I would hope that Pixar/Disney will also push for Direction, Screenplay, Sound, and Score nods.

    TDK deserves the same.
  • James
If I was in Pixar's shoes, I'd do exactly the same thing. This is their chance to push animation up to the same critical level as live-action movies, and there's no better example than WALL-E. It's definitely the best film of the year, not that that holds any sway over the Oscars.

They have to do it, even if they won't win.
  • BCS
No way, just because a movie is a fan favorite it doesnt mean that it is the best film of the year.

Why is everybody talking about The Dark Knight anyway? No where in article is TDK mentioned, so I can't imagine why the haters would bring it up. They aren't linked at the hip; there isn't some sort of agreement where if WALL-E gets nominated TDK must as well, nor vice versa. Standing on its own merits, and not comparing it to anything, in my opinion WALL-E shouldn't be nominated.

Anyway its already been decided that The Wrestler will win.
  • Cody
Until I saw TDK, I was completely convinced that Wall-E would win Best Picture. In my opinion, Wall-E is an incredible film, and I agree with the push for it in the Best Picture category.

The Academy needs to do away with the Best Animated category; the category implies that the animated feature should be viewed differently than a live-action feature. Both are films and should be compared equally.

Wow... I didn't expect to take that so seriously.
  • hey folks, sign the petition! click my name.
  • l3xo
personally would love for this to get the oscar, unfortunately dont see it happening...will probably get the nom though, one of the better movies to come out in a long while
  • J. Luna
Wall-E was a great great movie, but best picture? No way. Though I must say that Captain Awesome's argument about Diablo Cody sure is making me vacillate my opinion a bit. Also on the flip side, I that just being nominated will definitely give these films a kind of recognition that they've needed for a long long time now. They've been on par, if not better, than most of the junk out these days. So a nomination if anything would be thrilling. These films have been ready for more than the animation category for a long time now.
  • Daniel
The second half of Wall-E ruins its chances for BP. At that point, it loses its appeal and becomes another animated film. The tone, writing, and look of the first half is absolutely magical; the second half lacks presents a worn out message and predictable/boring characters.
  • Travis
As amazing as "The Dark Knight" was "Wall-E" is hands down the best film I've seen this year. I'm infinitely disappointed in how Wall-E didn't permeate daily life as much as the disaster that "Cars" was did. I can fully support Wall-E as not just Best Animated Film, but also Best Film.
  • Dark Knight will NOT be nominated for best picture. I absolutely guarantee it. I loved the movie as much as all the other fanboys, but seriously guys. Were lucky enough that Heath will be nominated.
  • A Better Class of Criminal
I would love to see TDK or Wall-E nominated... but even if something that miraculous happens, they still won't win.
Wall-E has best animated film in the bag... and Heath probably has best supporting actor in the bag.
But if either film actually gets lucky enough to get nominated there is no way in hell the Academy will pick them over some artsy flick.
  • Zinc
No. They have the Best Animation award for a reason. Stop sucking on that cold robotic cock.
  • Colombus
No need to be rude. Besides what kind of junk would you rather have? I bet you're the kind of person who think Rambo's a work of art.
  • TheOriginalHappyDais
Giving WALL-E the nomination would be a *very* good play by the Academy. It would restore the Oscar's show ratings (which have fallen) as people wonder, "Could this actually happen?" It would also restore faith in the system (animated movies have NEVER won Best Picture) and give a good movie a wonderful achievement. (It also gives the Academy an excuse to not give out another nomination for another 17 years. "Well, we did it last year, and it didn't win!!" ...XP Blech.) But it would be tossing a bone to Pixar and fans alike (however tasty it may be). The chances of WALL-E actually winning (unless a LOT of actors hop on the "It was a REALLY good movie"/"Let's get an animated feature to win!" bandwagon) are slim. Let me clarify: I am one of WALL-E's biggest fans (DVD: preordered, Fleece Blanket: on bed WALL-E Fanart- by desk) and would LOVE to see it win; I just realize that many people are prejudiced against animated films (or biased towards 'artsy flicks', as one person put it.)

I really hope WALL-E gets the nomination; It's a win-win situation, and a chance to make history happen for one of the best movies I've ever seen. (Wait, scratch that... THE best! ^^)
  • CaptainChunk
I hope they're successful, it's the best film(animated or not) I've seen from Disney in a long time.
  • spikeshinizle
I hope it gets a nomination at the very least, as a huge fan of animated films I'm hoping it might finally start to show people that these "cartoon movies" actually have a very high place in cinema and aren't simply for kids....the amount of people I've heard criticizing WALL-E without having seen it, because its "looks like a stupid cartoon" drives me insane (and these are people who are studying film).

While I loved TDK, I think WALL-E has a little more potential to win best picture, although having said that I'd be just as stoked if TDK was nominated.
  • ElasticPoodle
    OH MY GOOD LORD!!!!!!

This has made me so happy I could cry
  • caroline
YES! YES! YES! WALL-E deserves the Best Picture nomination along with the Dark Knight. It is a unique love story. If not Best Picture win, then Best Original Screenplay win for Stanton.
  • Wall•E Plays Pong
I think Ratatouille could have also been nominated for best picture considering how great, entertaining, and cohesively made it was, not to mention how well reviewed it was (I think it had even a slightly higher average than Wall-E) , but at least it had the original screenplay nomination and best animated film. I'm still ambivalent about best Animated feature film award. I think that award helps pull more quality U.S. and international animated films to the attention of the public and the academy, at the expense of treating them as some sub standard of film with a special little category. But the fact remains, an animated film is still a film, and should be given the opportunity to win best picture.

Regardless of an actual win, a nomination would be a step in the right direction to get the public and the academy thinking about animation more seriously. The U.S. needs to stop thinking about animation as a kid/family centered medium, even if Pixar's frequent goal is to make universally enjoyable films.

I'm reminded of Roger Ebert's last line of his Ratatouille review and think it's relevant here: "Every time an animated film is successful, you have to read all over again about how animation isn't "just for children" but "for the whole family," and "even for adults going on their own." No kidding!"

Also, Wall-E for president. He's good at cleaning up messes.
  • Wall-e_Fanatic!!
I feel wall-e's chances at winning are very higher considering the fact that the typical BP films coming out aren't at all that great.Someone mentioned Ratatouille got a higher average score for reviews and it did but it was NOT considered a "masterpiece for the ages" just a very good film.I hope and pray everynight that the academy can cement wall-e into film history and let it win because it hands down is the best picture of the year.Point blank. The best film should win not the one that's more artsy as someone put it.To get wall-e to win the fans and critics have to have a hue and cry lasting up to the nominations and I feel we can do it.Wall-e is my favorite film so i'm extremely passionate about this subject.
  • Russian den
    Ya Russkiy !!!
  • Quan
I don't think it stands a chance in hell of winning.
  • jamie
"If Diablo Cody can get an Oscar. ANYONE can get an Oscar."

maybe, but a little animated robot can't sleep his way to the top of the pile
  • Chip
WALL-E is certainly good enough to be nominated (and even win) Best Picture. Who knows, even if it doesn't happen with WALL-E, as long as the Oscars are around, it's going to happen one day. I wouldn't mind seeing The Dark Knight getting a nomination either. As for which I liked better, I might say The Dark Knight, though it had more flaws than WALL-E. But both are excellent films that I will be purchasing on DVD.

All I can say is, if neither WALL-E nor The Dark Knight is nominated for Best Picture, then I will NOT be watching the 2009 Academy Awards, I really will not. I don't care what else they're nominated for, but ONE of them at least has to get a Best Pic nomination.
  • No big deal!!! the movie is simply superb and stands along far beyond other animated flicks on the same year!! it will surely bag few oscards easily
