TR2N Helmer Joseph Kosinski Directs Gears of War 2

Apparently we’re all about the slightly deceptive headlines tonight. Joseph Kosinski is the fx-heavy commercial director who is now helming TR2N for Disney (or TRON 2 for those who refuse to use Disney’s stupid title). We’ve featured some of Kosinski’s work in a past Commercial Directors Spotlight, which if you haven’t already, you should check it out. Some of you might recall that Kosinski directed the popular Gears of War trailer which made use of the Mad World song from the Donnie Darko soundtrack. Well, Kosinski has returned to direct a television advertisement titled “Last Day” for the game’s sequel, Gears of War 2. You can check out the new ad below.

I felt like i had muted the sound to the ad and was listening to the Little Miss Sunshine soundtrack. He sure likes to use songs that have already been used in movies. Still a pretty cool ad.

The music seems off but the overall video is very good. The drilling through the dirt part reminded me of the drop sequence in Aliens.

Han: I know, I saw the trailer a couple days back, but only learned that Kosinski directed it tonight. Didn't see it mentioned on any of the video game sites, and I think its relevant to the movie watching audience, agree?

I've never played Gears of War, but I'm familiar with the game, and I really love this ad. It's cool to see an action game like this with such a subdued trailer.

Liked the ad, but felt like they were trying to hard to capture the same vibe as the one from the first game (with Gary Jules' Mad World). Didn't work as well.

I am so sick of you flipping media glommers ripping on the title of Tr2n. Every time I see an article about this heavily buzzed flick (or in this case NOT about...), the author just HAS to drop a parenthetic snark to show everyone that he/she has an opinion. It's a bit like hanging your bare butt out the window of a schoolbus to prove your a teenager. We know what you are. We've seen it before. Put it away. Insisting on ripping the title with every post tells the world that you just don't "get it".

When i first saw this i did not think much of it. I would agree with Adam Quigley...but after i saw it a 2nd time it grew on me and i like it!

Crazy that people felt the music and the visuals were off. There are so many little cues that are bang on with the music, and obviously he's going for a hard contrast. I think it's genius, just as the Mad World commercial was for the first game.

I don't think the music fits the piece. It almost was a complete contrast to be a complete contrast instead of fit with the mood he was probably going for. Not my fav.

I thought they synced together beautifully; it really gave it gravity, like the Mad World commercial did. If you want the pump-up stuff, then play the game.

Every time I see this commercial/ad I tear up. I don't know why it tears at my heart strings. I disliked the first game itself but this makes me want to get the sequel to see if the story improved any.

I'd say it's a great follow-up to the Mad World ad. Now if only I could get an artist/song name...

It feels like it's ripping off the original Mad World trailer because it was cut by the same company that made the Mad World trailer (with the help of joseph kosinski i guess). i personally love the trailer and think the lyrics are pitch perfect for the images

the whole reason that song is amazing is because of the anticipation.

It's funny Peter that you mentioned you saw it a few days ago and you didn't know who was the director!! C'mon... you can recognize a Joe Kosiniski commercial from a mile away... just by the first shot

btw, IMO his Halo commercial is still the best full-Cg piece EVER (yeah.. I know the beginning is not CG)... and I really like the other GOW2 ad that nobody mentioned ("rendezvous")

But I love the fact that the more you watch these ads, the more they grow on you...

Loved it, great contrast, much better than having some shitty rock song thrown over the top with a million quick cuts of weapons and blood.

Whenever the "Mad World" trailer would come on in the cinema everyone would shut up immediately, I think his style of contrast works very well.
