Fanboys Pushed to 2009

If you were looking forward to finally seeing Fanboys on the big screen in 2008, I have some bad news for you. The Weinstein Co has moved the film back to February 6th 2009 from it’s scheduled release late next month. The film will now go head to head with Summit’s sci-fi superhero film Push, Pink Panther 2, and the Jennifer Aniston comedy He’s Just Not That Into You. But before you start writing Darth Weinstein angry letters (is anyone still that passionate about seeing the film at this point?), know that this is part of a bigger decision to push all of their releases (witht he exception of The Reader and Zack and Miri Make a Porno) back to 2009.

John Madden’s action thriller Killshot has been moved to January 23rd 2009. Sean Penn/Harrison Ford drama Crossing Over and Mikael Håfström’s Shanghai have both been pushed to a 2009 TBA slot. Harvey Weinstein assures the LA Times that the date changes has nothing to do with the speculated poor financial health of the company, but instead the changes were made because early 2009 offers a better opportunity to be seen.

Discuss: Is anyone still interested in seeing Fanboys at this point?

  • Rob
    Nope, no one is.

And in my opinion, nobody ever should have been in the first place.
  • E
Agreed, this will fail, and at this point who cares no interest what so ever
  • Brian
As long as I don't die from cancer before this movie comes out I'm fine with whenever they release it.
  • I'm still interested.

I just don't understand the constant pushing back business. After the edits/re-shoots/resolution to not remove the cancer storyline... I just don't get it. May 2007, then August 2007, then January 2008, then September 2008, then November 2008, then January 2009, now February 2009.

Are they ever gonna fuckin' release CROSSING OVER? It's been bumped from Summer 2007 to Fall 2007 to Fall 2008 and now to TBA hell. No one even talks about this maximum bumpage either. Am I the only person who wants to see a movie about immigration directed by Wayne Kramer and starring Harrison Ford, Sean Peen, and Ray Liotta? I fucking hope not.

I love the Weinsteins for shelving this crap. Honestly from what I've seen and the stupid hysteria to get it released, Im annoyed by the concept. Keep pushing it back just to mess with 'em.
  • I am interested. Hate the Weinsteins, but want to see the movie...
  • I still want to see this movie. It seems like it has been destined to be pushed back and pushed back. So when the movie finally gets released, it will truly be an event for me.

I saw footage of this movie at Star Wars Celebration IV, and it looks hilarious. I really still want to see it.

They could hold this movie on the shelfs for as long as they want. The majority of the mainstream audiences are unaware of its existence. When it comes time to release it, just shower the television with commercials for it (with heavy Star Wars music, of course) and people will show up to see it. It's an easy 10-15 million dollar (opening weekend) earner if advertised properly. A large part of the fan base is already built in.
  • I'm ticked off about this but only 'cause I mentioned it in passing as "2008's Fanboys" in my book that comes out late next month; the book's already at the press so it's going to have a mistake in it before it even comes out. Hurmph. (Oh, thanks for asking--the book's called Homemade Hollywood). Guess I better cross my fingers that I get to do an updated edition in five years so I can correct it.

I definitely still want to see it. But at this point I seriously doubt that I'll see it in a theater. Same thing happened with Be Kind, Rewind. It suffered a number of delays, and by the time it was actually released I had already mentally given up on it and just waited for the DVD.

I still want to see it. If you truely wanted to see it from the beginning then why would that change?

I'm starting to think this movie will be bundled with Duke Nukem Forever.
  • This has been pushed back so many times I am not interested in it anymore....

I believe the Weinstein Company is going to fold. They are quickly losing money and staff. They are a far cry from the Miramax golden days of the 90's. Harvey needs anger management.

I've heard buzz on all of the films mentioned a long time ago. I've seen trailers for Killshot and Fanboys. Release them already!
  • As the person who broke the whole non-cancer version story, and having seen about 45 min of the footage a year and a half ago, I am still very interested in seeing this movie and for the 3rd year in a row I'll be putting it on my Things I'm Looking Forward to this year post.
From the footage I've seen its a love letter to fanboys of all types, but obviously especially Star Wars fanboys, and its hilarious to boot.
Plus nothing could deter me from Kristen Bell in the Gold Bikini.

can they retitle the movie duke nukem forever?
  • Adding this to the "Movies I've been hearing about FOREVER but will forget about before discovering on DVD 5 years from now" list along with Trick R Treat and Outlander. Dammit.

I don't really care about Fanboys, but for some foolish reason I'm still looking forward to Killshot. Just recently saw Infernal Affairs 2 and they had a trailer for it on there. Kinda makes me laugh, sadly.
  • krackajap
The only reason I was ever interested in this movie was for the fact that it's an example of fans being vocal enough to "save" a production. Other than that, I have no interest in this movie.

This is the thing that pisses me off about fan sites. They go on and on ad nauseum about a film for months and months. Then everyone gets so sick of people talking about what was probably a marginal movie at best in the first place that a backlash develops. Does "Snakes on a Plane" ring any bells? I think there should be a 3 month hype window for these kinds of movies. I mean Dark Knight and Watchmen is one thing but Fanboys? C'mon, /Film you're better than that.
  • Jesus just push it back more then...2010...2011...20someday.
