Daniel Craig Turns Down Thor

When it was revealed that Kenneth Branagh was in talks to direct a big screen adaptation of Thor, many people wondered what a Branagh superhero movie would be like. Now we have some idea. IESB is reporting that Marvel actually offered the lead role to Daniel Craig, but the Quantum of Solace star confirmed that he actually turned down the role.

I know this is a bit of “non-news”, but I think it shows the direction that Marvel wants to take their mythical superhero franchise. I don’t know about you guys but I can’t even imagine Craig with long hair and a big hammer, lightning streaking across the sky in the background.

Discuss: But now that Craig is out as a possibility, who do you think Marvel might sign to play the role? Lets avoid the obvious wrestlers and action stars, it looks like Marvel wants a higher class actor in the role.

  • Daniel Craig would've been a strange choice. Thor is a hard role to cast unless they're aiming to reinvent him or his physical appearance atleast. How about getting that dude who was on Journeyman/Rome? If I'm not wrong he's about Craigs age and a damn good actor.
  • Hang on, I really think that "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan would be perfect for this role
  • Aeghast
Guess they're heading for non americans, huh..? *smirks*
  • StoicRomance
    Josh Holloway
  • J.D.
    Judi Dench?
  • TedTedPoleyPoley
    Fabio
  • NO THANKS
    Bill Cosby.
  • Brian from OR
When Iron Man came out in May I actually said that Daniel Craig could be Thor. Of course some guy gave me hell for even mentioning the idea on the Iron Man board on myspace. But at least Marvel is trying to get a real actor to play the Thor then just some person who looks like him.
  • THe only way they could pull of a Thor movie would be with an actor of Craig's calibur.
  • lancelewis
since we have been forbidden to mention the obvious likes of Tyler Mane, how about Don Cheadle?
  • A Better Class of Criminal
    Crap.
Craig might have actually been a good choice...

Oh, I don't know... there's not too many a good blonde actor.
  • Jaybee U Tler
Why would a thor have a brit accent? Major plothole maybe. I mean they just gave Tom cruise all hell for the same thing..................
  • sideshowRaheem
I know u said avoid wrestlers and personaly I don't think he would make a good lead actor BUT it's hard to ignor a guy like Paul Levesque aka Triple H. He has a few things working for him first off no make up needed he already has the long blond hair and musles straght out of the comic he looks like Thor come to life, Marvel could almost sue him for copy right infringment. Second he comes with a built in audiance as much as people think pro-wrestling is for hicks and children the WWE has a pretty big following, Wrestlemania 24 had 1.2 million PPV buys at 50 bucks a piece and belive me most of those fans who purchaced it would be lining up on opening day. And third he'll work cheap assuming you could get both Rober Downy Jr and Ed Norton to be in a Avengers film in order to keep the budget under control your gonna wanna get actors for Captin America and Thor that work for as little money as possible and considering the only movie role he's ever had was in Blade 3 Triple H aint gonna cost much.

With all that said he's not a terrible actor but I doubt he could pull of the acent needed for the role so he's still a pretty bad choice I was just playing devils advocate.

Alexander Skarsagard (Brad from Generation Kill)
  • Brockdiesel99
I agree that Triple H looks the part but the story needs someone with more acting ability. Mickey Rourke comes to mind.
  • Chris
Yea, I just don't see a Thor movie working. Really an asgardian running around modern day NY? It will be just as campy as something like He-Man. I just can't imagine this being cool or even drawing a crowd older than teenagers.
  • Lenny
I hear Terrance Howard is free.
He could go with the Snipes Demolition Man look.
He'd have to work on his "Thou Arts" and "For Sooths" me thinks...
  • Tripplo
    ...Brad Pitt?
  • Max
I bet it will be Karl Urban.
  • Alexander Skarsgard would be good, but he'd be an even better Captain America. In fact he'd be perfect for that role.
For Thor you need someone who really has that Norwegian forehead.
Karl (Alexander Godunov) in Die Hard would have been perfect 20 years ago.
Vladimir Kulich (Buliwyf in 13th Warrior) would have been great 10 years ago.
I dunno, I'm not up on my Norwegian/Scandinavian actors.
But I know someone here has to be.

i feel that this was a smart move on daniel craig's part. he'd have to pull a 300 diet to bulk up to the point of being able to toss around Mjolner at baddies. actually, thinking 300, gerard butler could be a pick. i could also see hugh jackman if he doesn't mind switching from marvel (wolverine) to dc.
  • spikey_korean
    *correction* thor was also marvel
  • Andy Allgood
I wonder how Vinnie Jones would do in a part like this... I know he was already a villian in one of the X-Men, but hey, you never know...

I also wonder what he would look like with a blonde wig like that...hmm...
  • BadWasabi
Owen Wilson. You can say that his nose got broken while training with the hammer.
  • Nils
I think they should get Trond Espen Seim. He is an excellent Norwegian actor who has appeared in the Varg Veum thriller series in Norway. If you are going to have a Norse god, shouldn't there be a Scandinavian actor playing it? Authenticity maybe?
  • Ghost
Yeah I don't think Craig would have been that great of a choice to begin with.

I know that bloke who was in Rome and Journeyman was also being thrown around.
  • Agent J
    Matt Damon?
  • Justin
Mickey Rourke (they'll want him even more after he is nominated for best actor, possibly winning)
  • joe
Sean Bean. He looks the part (think LOTR) and he's a great actor.
  • kip
Fine fine I'll do it! Someone get me in the gym for the next six months, the things I do for hollywood.
  • shane
Michael Fassbender....stelios from 300..."then we shall fight in the shade" best character besides gerard in that visual orgasm of a movie.
  • Agent J
I like Sean Bean as Thor....and Matt mofo Damon.
  • Adam
kevin mckidd wouldn't be bad. It really depends on what look you're going for, though(I'm assuming it's the more recent look that appeared in the JMS run).
  • I'll second Brad Pitt, just seems like a good pick to me.
  • south texas terror
Vincent D'onofrio, hey it worked for adventures in babysitting
  • Jaybee U Tler
They should cast that little girl from Adventures in babysitting!
  • I love South Texas Terror and Jaybee U Tier's comments!

I could care less about a Thor movie. C'mon. Triple H can act? Right.
  • AimFaiL
some one from skandinavia now that it is a skandinavian mythorical god .. so come one .. do it right man !! en denmark sweden norway .. !!
  • yeah i say brad pitt. has anyone seen TROY i say BRAD!
  • Agent J
As a long time wrestling fan. I'll answer Paul Walter Hauser's question...Yes, Triple H can act.
  • Bill Fagerbakke (Tom Cullen) Stephen King's The Stand

Dolph Lundgren (Andrew Scott) Universal Soldier

Brad Pitt (Lt. Aldo Raine) Inglorious Bastards

So far that's why i come up with.
  • REAL6
We need someone thats a great actor from Scandanavia. A white american man just wont cut it. Thats the only way it will be believeable!!!
  • marvel might be dying to get mickey rourke after they see the wrestler. but brad pitt seems ok if he doesnt get captain america.
  • Jaybee U Tler
I think mickey rourke is a wee trillion years to old. no?
  • Osborne Cox
No on Pitt for Thor but yes for Captain America. My vote is for Viggo Mortensen.
  • Alex
I like Sean Bean like someone else said, how about Aaron Eckhart? His other comic book character is dead, he is a great actor and has a strong face.
  • Malcolm
Not surprising Craig turned down Thor. After Golden Compass, his people are probably trying to keep anything remotely fantasy as far away as they can from him.
  • cekma
Well not a classier actor but I like Karl Urban as Thor.
  • count floyd
    David Spade
  • Palmer
Actually, I think Craig might have been asked to play Donald Blake. The human vessel for Thor. Much like how Rick Jones was for Captain Marvel in the beginning.
