Brian Azzarello’s Joker Graphic Novel

Eisner Award winner Brian Azzarello’s (100 Bullets) Joker graphic novel hits store shelves on October 29th November 4th. Our friends at IO9 are calling it “a look at what The Joker did next” following The Dark Knight, which might not be entirely accurate, but we like the sound of it anyway. This might not be The Dark Knight sequel that everyone wants. In fact, the book’s original title Joker: The Dark Knight was nixed by the guys at Warner Bros. Brian told Newsarama that fans of Heath Ledger’s Joker in The Dark Knight are “gonna love our book” insisting that Nolan’s Joker and his Joker are “very, very eerily similar.”

Azzarello, known for writing hardcore violence into his comics, calls it “the most violent thing I’ve ever written.” Brian reteams with Lex Luthor: Man of Steel artist Lee Bermejo to “show an even darker and more disturbing side to the most dangerous man in Gotham.” The official book description reads:

After yet another stint in Arkham Asylum, The Joker finds “his city” divided among mobsters and costumed villains. Not content to settle for a piece of the pie, The Joker vows to take back the whole damn enchilada by any means necessary. Look for appearances by a slew of Gotham’s most wanted, including gritty takes on Two-Face, Riddler, Killer Croc, Penguin, Harley Quinn and even Batman! Not since THE KILLING JOKE have you seen such a powerful tale of The Joker – you won’t want to miss this one!

Referencing Alan Moore’s The Killing Joke brings high expectations. I’ve often wondered why Azzarello’s 100 Bullets has yet to be turned into a television show or big screen movie. Personally, I’d love to see an HBO or Showtime series.

You can read the first four pages of Azzarello’s Joker on MySpace. The 128-page hardcover is available for preorder on Amazon for $13.59 (32% off the cover price of $19.99).

I absolutely cannot wait. but i heard the date was Nov. 4th, whatever, the sooner the better!

Just to establish the facts before ignorant people start making false observations, Lee Bermejo's "scarred smile" Joker pre-dates Ledger's casting by six months. Here's a dated interview with a link to the pic below:

    this looks sick cannot wait
  • i'm stoked out of my mind for this. i've seen a few previews from a few different blogs (as diverse as the mtv splasphpage and the nymag's culture vulture) and this just looks epic. i dig bermejo's take on the joker and how he isn't wearing the fruity string tie and fedora and whatnot. i also like how the entire story is told from one of the joker's goons.

    Harley Quinn....Count me in!

Azzarello is one of my favorite comic writers in the industry. I also like that he resembles the Ledger Joker there.

    :)

it should perhaps be noted that this was written 2 years before the dark knight came out in theaters. :)
  • I pre-ordered this months ago from Amazon.com. DC and Marvel GNs tend to hit the direct market first as there's usually a two-week (or more) time log before it actually ships from Amazon.com, but it's hard to pay full price just to get it earlier.

In any case, I'm with the other posters here: I'm really looking forward to this. I'll probably end up writing up a review of it too.

I remember that Lee said in an interview that he gave the Joker scars on his face way before the first pictures of Heath Ledger's the Joker were released.

Anyway i can't freaking wait for this one to be released. I'm a huge fan of both Azzarello and Bermejo.

i've been in crush comics every week for the past month asking about the release date on this one, ever since Wizard had an article about it in August. cannot wait!
  • I always want Azzarello to be a better writer than he is. He always starts off great, and then fucks up the end.

100 Bullets was great. for about 25 issues. Now it's so full of needless wordplay and unfinished sentences, I can hardly read it.

And his Hellblazer run? Awesome. Except it didn't finish. It was like he forgot to come up with a surprise ending, and ended up just hiding the surprise instead.

    Grrrrr.

That said, I'll be buying this book for sure.

    oh DC not another delay

Can't help myself but dislike the coloration. :?
  • That looks awesome!
  • whatever
Never liked the joker. He's just so one note. Give me someone with some drama.

God. Those four pages on myspace were such a cock tease. I can't wait till this comes out.
  • YoungZe
whatever obviously never read Alan Moore's "The Killing Joke".
  • BlackjackJohnson
    You name is, YoungZe!
  • This will probably be the second graphic novel I've ever bought. First being Watchmen. Also, IGN gave it a 9.8.

Lame, them trying to pass this off as a bit of a sequel to dark knight to sell the comic.

The fact that Two-Face is in shows how disconnected this is from Nolan's universe.
  • shazaaaaaaaaam!
@Jaybee U Tler Chris Nolan took the idea of this joker from this book that had been in the works for 2 years go to Batman-on-film.

This Joker is the inspiration for leger's look instead of the smiling permawhite joker

    I am getting this.

I'm pretty excited for this. I'm not very familiar with Azzarello's work but the reviews and impressions of this have been very positive. I know it's not written as a Dark Knight sequel or tie in but that's kind of how I'm viewing it. A sequel that's not really based in the continuity of the movie but follows style wise and character wise to an extent. I haven't read it yet but I think it would be really cool if DC adapted this to an animated version and used someone who could sound like Ledger to voice Joker. The fans would go crazy.

Looking forward to this big time. What the hell was "whatever" on about? How can anyone possibly say Joker is "one-note"? lol. He is the most unpredictable villain in any genre let alone comics!!

Got this last week. Absolutely amazing. I've never been a DC comic fan, even though I liked the Batman movies, but this was just brilliant. The different take on the villains make it very interesting. I especially love their version of the Riddler.
