When Kevin Smith first announced the title of his next comedy, Zack and Miri Make a Porno, I wondered if The Weinstein Co would be able to market a film with the word “Porno” in the title. When the film was in production, they were forced to use a working title of “Zack and Miri” to avoid problems with shooting locations and local permits. And now that the advertising campaign is in full swing, fifteen newspapers and several television stations are refusing to to run advertising for the film.

According to CNN, Fox Sports decided to drop a series of ads which were scheduled to run during Los Angeles Dodgers games. Apparently the spots were dropped at the team’s request when viewers complained. A child-development expert filed a complaint in Boston. The city of Philadelphia refused bus stop advertising, deeming the word porno “highly sexually suggestive and not suitable for general audiences.”

The city claims they would be open to running advertising for the film which calls the movie just “Zack and Miri”, but what’s the point? The Weinstein Co is considering using a censored title in newspapers that originally rejected the film’s original advertisements. The marketing company apparently developed a version of the stick-figure poster without the film’s name, which just reads: “Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks made a movie so outrageous that we can’t even tell you the title.” Now that’s funny.

Discuss: Is Zack and Miri Make a Porno Advertising inappropriate for the general public?

Disclosure: The poster image above is a mock-up of the advertisement TWC mentions in the story, but is not an official image.

it's weird to read comments bashing smith or this movie... I mean, if you are not an internet troll sir, it seems you didn't pay attention to other articles showing trailers full of gore and death.

I know, perhaps if we add "Smith" or "Porno" in the title, you'll be able to pick'em up faster and start bashing and TALKING IN CAPS in everything that's "outrageous".

on another note, go have intercourse with yourself lame pedestrian dumb piece of excrement.
  • Nixen
I Find this totally ludacris to be honest. It's fine for massive billboards of women in underwear all around cities but the spelling of the word porno is going to far come on and just look at some of the other movie names Spy who shagged me/ Knocked up/ 40 yr old virgin... Seriously they all post the same questions from kids to their parents whats shagged me mean or knocked up etc..
Personally i think the MPAA has a problem with Kevin Smith mainly due to the fact he doesnt fit the typical director build and likes to do things his way.. and don't you dare say that he wrecks hollywood he enhances hollywood by being different by having a cult following.. major film Companies wreck hollywood who put out crap like Indy 4

I find it kinda odd that they can promote sexuality which this movie is about and they can't say Porno? What they should do is run the full title after seven and on the cable channels.

Don't see how it's any worse than Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me.

    GawwwwdDAMN, people are ridiculous.

I have a hard time believing that a significant amount of people really complained about the word 'porno.' That said, this is the first Kevin Smith movie I haven't been ready to see on opening day. I can't really say why, it just doesn't catch me yet. I'm a big KS fan, though, so I hope it bombs everything else when it opens.

    :)

Beyond the occasional kid asking, "mommy, what's a porno?" there's no morally disrupting qualities of a word. It's just to save parents the difficulty of actually parenting them.

    1. Anyone who expects a mainstream Hollywood film comedy to feature loads of explicit sex is an idiot and their opinion is irrelevant.

    2. The word is clearly supposed to be suggestive and inflammatory within the bounds of decency. "Porno" is clearly a more evocative word than "adult movie" but to suggest that it is unacceptable is ridiculous to me. But then, I don't live in America where a brief flash of Janet Jackson's tits is treated as the fall of western civilisation.

    3. America clearly has an issue with sex and violence insofar as sex is considered dirty and violence is considered acceptable. Understanable in some ways; the country was forged from the barrel of a gun and this is apparent to anyone taking a look. The religious zealots will be the death of your country my friends, you need to take a step back and look at what the hell is happening to yourselves.

    4. Why people rail on Smith amazes me - this is a guy who put himself in the position that he is in - he is no Hollywood insider. If he were, the film would probably have been called "Zack And Miri Make A Dirty Movie" or something like that, and all of this stuff would have been excised by studio execs. If you don't like his stuff that's your right but there isn't one poster on this site who wouldn't want to make their own movie and forge a Hollywood career out of it, and anyone who says otherwise is either lying or not a true movie fan.

I'm off to listen to my favourite punk album, "Never Mind The Male Reproductive Organs" by The Intercourse Is Acceptable Between Consentual Partners Within The Confines Of Marriage Pistols.

More controversy = more publicity. More people will be interested, and will go to see it now.
  • I totally second your thoughts, Chelsea.

Kevin Smith can still make his movies, even if they're about porno, as they'll only be shown to the people who opt in to seeing them.

Advertisements are out there for anyone to see, including children. Should parents be aware and cautious about what they let their children see, absolutely, But there is a responsibility on the broadcasting end to be aware that anything that's put on mainstream television and billboards is viewable by anyone.

Besides, this kind of thing doesn't hurt the film, it helps it. Look at how much publicity a scandal like this generates. Even the poster, in it's implicit images creates a mystery that gives the film more intrigue than it would have otherwise.
  • Elpizo
Violence is no problem in the US, but when something starts to involve sex, everyone has a big problem.
  • Chelsea
Well, the fact is (and I know it's been stated already) you can keep children from SEEING movies with adult content, but you can't stop them from watching television and seeing the ads.

The main issue and uproar is from parents, who know that our media is getting more and more explicit so they're forced to, when their children question what a "porno" is, to either A) lie to their children, or B) work their way around to not answering. And yes, I know parents already deal with this sort of issue, but it's just getting harder and harder to do as the years go on. I know people in the 50s didn't have to worry about this.

So it's not about the MPAA hating sex and favoring violence. Because YES there is violence in video games, YES there is violence on TV, and YES there is sex violence, and all else in movies. But all of that can be controlled. The thing that can't is advertisement. And you can try and tell me that there's still violence in advertisement, but if you think about it, there really isn't.

With all that said, I am really excited to see this movie. And whether or not it bombs doesn't matter at all to me (Mallrats is one of my favorite comedies of all time, definitely my favorite Smith film, and look where that went). I also assumed there wasn't going to be any real nudity in it, because that's never what Smith is about. He's about taking really racy ideas and forming nice stories around them. So that's what this is. And I'm sure I'll love it.

And anyone who thinks it will be dumb needs to lighten up. Get off your high horse and laugh a little. Stop trying to talk about how transcendental Superbad was. Really, no one cares. And I'm sure you're stressing yourself out.
  • NINJARTIST
So I can walk through Philly and see extensive homeless, adult film stores and horrible transvestite prostitutes, but the word "porno" on a bus is bad... Glad they have their priorities straight...

"Remember what the MPAA says; Horrific, Deplorable violence is okay, as long as people don't say any naughty words!"
  • Mikey M
I really hope this movie bombs so we do not need to hear about it anymore.
  • Bull
Substitute Philadelphia for Los Angeles in my last post.
  • Bull
The City of Los Angeles is a local government entity. You are right about Fox Sports being private and therefore having the freedom to run the ads (but not immune from criticism), but the City of LA is censoring the use of the word "porno."

People can choose not to run the ads because of words they deem "offensive", but don't get mad at people when they think it is stupid - especially when it is.
  • While Im not offended personally I owe it to my society to respect a busdriver in NC who might be offended by it! This is not about content, its about the title. My guess is that Many posters are under 30 here and they see the world in a different way I guess. Also for those who say its only a word- do you want to see the networks air programing were they use the F-bomb every other word. YES, its only a word, but the more we put everthing up front and center the more we fall into the gutter! Im all for anything goes between consenting adults in your home and between friends but I really feel were better off if things were CLASSIER in the way we conduct ourself in whats front and center for all to see.. Again this issue is about the title, not the films CONTENT! Thats what the ratings system is for!
  • eduke
excuse me Gajonka, but i think there are other directors that give Hollywood a bad name, like all the movies with just FX and no history to justifi, or just hte remake movies, or the lethal weapon 5?? come on.. holliwood is becoming a simple entretainment. nothing more. Indy 4? they ruin the history behind Indy. just to put crapy Fx, and a bad history. come on. the mummy?... u like that?.. ok so i think is not Smith who is ruin the name of hollywood. ( i have bad spell becose i am from argentina so sorry)
  • helicopters
i wonder if the movie will live up to its name... it looks kind of racy and all but i can't imagine it's nearly as sexually explicit as it's being made out to be.
  • Lenny
I going to see a screening tonight!! Wahoo Porno for me!!
  • @ScreenRant.com I couldn't have put it better myself.
  • That's how it works in America. Extreme violence = yes, suggestive sexuality = OH, DEAR GOD, NO!
  • Jack
i'm pretty sure 40 year old virgin and knocked up are sexually suggestive. basically everything is offensive if you look hard enough..
  • Seymour
Is it being a hater to point out this film is getting panned by most viewers who aren't diehard Kevin Smith fans?

The reason Zack and Miri has "Porno" in the title at all is because the filmmakers thought it would help draw attention and fill seats. Generating controversy like this was something the Weinstein Company promotion machine dreamed about. That said, from reviews trickling out from preview showings at film festivals, few people think this turkey is very good, so who cares? Like this one from the Chicago Film Fest:

"pathetically unimaginative in taking a raunchy concept -- two best friends make an adult movie to drum up cash -- and forcing it into a wholly conventional, low effort romantic comedy."

Somebody else who watched the film in Toronto said it’s "about as transgressive as the Tijuana donkey show from Clerks II."

Judging from the trailer, it looks dreary and dull. I predict a lot of fans who expect a sexy, raunchy adult comedy will walk away disappointed. Nearly no nudity, except for Jason Mewes' junk? Please.

If you're going to release a movie like this, pushing the envelope by making it explicitly about filming an amateur porno, why couldn't it be sexy? Good idea, bungled execution.
  • I'm not one to advocate obscenity, but if the MPAA let the green-band trailer out the way it is (highly-suggestive), then using the "p" word isn't that big of a deal in comparison, right?

Though who wants to have to explain what porno is to their 7 year old?
  • Ohiofile
Only in America. It's amazing that sex is such a touchy subject that the word "Porno" can be considered dangerous or offsetting to the point of removal from the poster. The unfortunate thing for Smith and Co is that now they have to rely on the idea of a stick figure getting enough attention that people stop to read the words "Seth Rogen" and decide to go to a movie with no title. Zack and Miri should have made a beer commercial. Or given a through and through head shot to a politician. Or both. A picture of Elizabeth Banks in a bikini holding a beer with her brains splattered on a white wall and Seth Rogen holding a shot gun probably would have gotten past the MPAA and those states that can't handle the word "Porno". Lame.
  • @Louis Vuitton Don

Thank you for exemplifying exactly what is wrong with the internet.

    Vic
  • for all you haters that hate on this movie and seth rogan. i would like to say. the don would like to tell you to all kill yourselves immediately with a slit on the wrist...VERTICALLY!
  • @Seriously?

"Censorship" only applies when it comes from the government. Or do you think that a private company should be forced to run an advertisement that it doesn't want to?

Should Pete have no choice in the ads he runs on /Film, a site that is owned by him and he should have full control over?

You may disagree, but it's not censorship. It's freedom of choice, and capitalism at work. I'm sure that Kevin Smith thought about the reaction to the content and title of the film before he made it and knew there would be controversy surrounding it.

    Vic

Hah, USA ... Soldiers being killed in Iraq and Afghanistan for bullshit? Okay. Boobs and bad words on tv? Holy shit.
  • fab
what the hell!!!! why do people actually care?? these people who complain either have no kids or completely unaware that their kids look at porn and masturbate (which is a sin of course)...i sometimes wish the world were under a dictatorship..at least no one could complain (although the mass genocides and zero freedom would suck)..oh and the economy would be good at least.
  • REAL6
Americans fucking suck. Always pissed and stressed over every fucking thing. Grow up people. ITS ONLY A WORD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Jason
Are you serious??? People cannot even read the WORD porno without being offended?! Seriously mate, WTF!!!
  • Source
I'm glad the "general public" still cries about such words are porno being on a movie poster.
  • I find this to be totally ridiculous. There is a metric-ton of ads out there that are way more "highly sexually suggestive" than the original posters for this movie. At least they found a clever way to circumvent the censorship and keep the marketing interesting.
  • Gajonka says
I ENJOY WRITING IN ALL CAPS AND MISSPELING WORDS BCAUSE IT MAKES MY POINT SO MUCH MORE CLERER AND STUFF!
  • whatever
WOW WOW WOW. This is sad. I can go anywhere right now and see a fifty foot billboard of some hot babe in a thong, yet the word porno is the most explicit thing some kid could be exposed to out there. It'd go right over their head, or in fact, most know about it anyway and it doesn't matter because they don't care for them. Is it the bible belt people which exposes their kids to all the torture and murder in the bible that's afraid of corrupting their kids? Unbelievable. Where's all the freedom we think we have?
  • Clint Barton
So now I'm wondering when the government is going to step in and start to censor the actual films too. This increasingly christian nation is getting more ridiculous with trying to force their prudish morals.

Words have no meaning until we assign meaning to them. That's how we learn a language as young children. You don't know what the word "tree" means until you are told "tree" and shown one. This is the sign-signifier relationship.
So when a child sees the word porno (sign), he does not know what it means unless he is told/shown the signifier.
This is where it becomes the parents responsibility to, well, BE PARENTS! If you're worried about the word porno in a movie title, then sit you're kids down and explain to them what it means. Explain your feelings on the subject.
  • Dr.Doc
thats hillarious ! rock on Mr. Smith !
  • Maxwell
Yet we can show trailers for Quarantine, Die Hard, Saw, etc. But when we use the word "porno", everyone loses their minds. This is dumb.
  • Gajonka
THIS WHOLE IDEA IS JUST SO CHEAP AND DUMB. IT IS B-CLASS VIDEO AND SHOUD GO STRAIGHT TO DVD. WHAT A JOKE SMITH ROGEN AND BANIKS ARE. THEY A RE A MOCKERY AND ARE THE REASON HOLLYWOOD GETS A BAD NAME. THEY ARE UNTALENETED.

    NEXT!
  • igroveman
I don't think a film like this should have been let out of a red-light district.
  • Melly Mel
Absolutely ridiculous. I wonder if they will do something similar in the UK? To be honest, all it does is create extra publicity for the film...
  • Seriously?
The cenorship in the united States is absolutely insane.
