Seven Pounds Movie Trailer

Last month we posted a trailer for the upcoming Will Smith drama Seven Pounds, only to have it quickly removed by Columbia Pictures hours later. The trailer is back, with a couple editing tweeks. We’ve  also transfered the comments from the previous posting.

Will Smith plays an IRS agent with a secret who will change the lives of seven strangers. The film reteams Smith with The Pursuit of Happyness director Gabriele Muccino, and features Rosario Dawson as Smith’s love interest, who is suffering from a heart condition, and Woody Harrelson as a blind pianist. Conner Cruise, the 13-year-old adopted son of Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, makes his acting debut as a younger version of Smith’s character.

The trailer looks promising, but early reviews from test screenings haven’t been nice, calling it “a bit too heavy handed for its own good”, pointing to its predictability and uneven pacing as weak points, and Smith and Dawson’s performance as the film’s strengths. As always, tell me what you think in the comments below.

Seven Pounds hits theaters on December 19th 2008.

Here are some other reviews, so the pacing hasn't been a problem for everyone...

I'm hoping this is gonna be a great movie!

"I just saw a screening of this film here in Seattle, and it is brilliant. I loved it. I think it's easily his strongest performance yet."

"I saw this last night at the Seattle screening. The movie is mysterious until the end. Will Smith is an IRS agent who works on cases where very ill people owe back taxes. He is very much a vigilante, deciding cases based on whether or not he perceives people to be good or not. He clearly has some serious baggage from his past, and we're left wondering until the end, when everything comes together. The ending was a very interesting twist, but had some over the top "Hollywood" elements. I thought the acting was very good."

"Saw the post production screening...It's an Awesome movie"

"I just saw a screening of the new will smith movie that comes out in December. The lady told us we were the first audience to see this movie ever, which is pretty exciting. But it became less exciting as the film went on. I don't want to spoil anything, but I will say it has a mostly original but poorly executed plot, good performances by Will Smith and Rosario Dawson, an awesome climax, and is VERY dramatic (i don't think a movie has made me feel that emotionally drained since Schindler's List). I'd like to see it again in theaters, to see what they've changed, but in its current state, I would be doing you an injustice to recommend it."

"Overall I thought Will did a good job with his character although I thought his character came across as sort of creepy at times. The movie wasn't bad, but it certainly wasn't good in my opinion. I think overall it was just sort of weird."

"i wasn't really a fan of the pursuit of happiness. the previous collaboration with the director and big willy, so going in i had virtually no expectations and thought it might be as sentimental and sensationalist as that film. So my views could be skewed by that. That being said, i very much enjoyed what i saw last night. Performance wise from smith and rosario dawson. Actually quite wonderful chemistry. The score was particularity haunting and effective as counterpoint to smiths crippling state of mind. a few elements were left very underdeveloped. Barry pepper for one. the entire woody harrleson story and character. That if interpreted the way the studio is going now could end up being very offensive to any blind collations, and sensitive people to that matter. Which is huge because it basically bookends then film. It is not well expositioned and handled badly. the overall film had a syrupy pay it forward sort of vibe to it, once you getting further along, but not enough to hallmark it up. Thought that was a nice balance of smiths good deeds, and conflicting circumstances. Rosaio was friken adorable by the by, and it was nice to have her possible one note role become incredibly integrated into the story with a beautiful relationship with smiths character. Apparently we saw a rough cut. could just be the studios way of lowering expectations. But I actually really dug what i saw and am very proud of big willy and his choices."

    "It was fantastic.

In my opinion, it was the strongest performance in Will Smith's impressive career.

...What I will say about the film is that, to use some critic cliches, it's emotionally gripping, powerful, and engaging. It pulls you in and doesn't let go, and at the end I found myself wishing I could stay in the rich world I'd been introduced to, continuing to witness the lives of these characters.
Smith shows off an impressive combination of both range and depth in the film that he doesn't often get credit for being capable of. The film is also impressive in that it enters the realm of the morally gray that most big Hollywood films avoid like the plague.

Anyway, the gist of what I'd like to say about Seven Pounds is that it gets my wholehearted seal of approval, you should all go check it out when it comes out December 19th."

    looks solid.

plus, hasn't everyone been dying to see rosario dawson and will smith together again after mib2...? no? nobody?
  • Serena
"From the director of Pursuit of Happyness" ... yikes! You would think that they would do some basic spell-check before they release the trailer.
  • lmfao, its supposed to be like that because it part of the movie, in the movie will smith was like HEY I TOLD U TO CHANGE this to the guy, cuz he knew it was spelt wrong. lmfao. and thats what the movie is called so yea..
  • charles
I don't know man maybe it really late I just don't get it. But I see it if the reviews are good.
  • Jbiza
Serena, the movie was called The Pursuit of Happyness for a reason. Use your brain.
  • GregoryV
Another Will Smith tear jerker? Bring out the kleenex!
  • Chris
Damn you Will, damn you and your amazing acting!
  • Derek
I think it looks really good from the trailer. Smith is a great actor, although he doesnt make one great film after the other, most if no all of his films are entertaining and every so often he goes for a serious role, and like in the Pursuit i think he will be great in this.
  • Gajonka
    woody harrelson! nice!
  • Gajonka
    TO DEREK:

SMMITH IS ANOT A GREAT ACTOR. HE IS A GREAT OVER ACTOR, WHICH ISN;T A GOOD THING AT ALL.
  • Clerks_girl
    @Serena- that's how it's spelled darling.

...Good trailer...told me very little about the movie.. but...good trailer
  • Derek
    Dear Gajonka,

He is a great actor imo. He has been in everything from Independence Day to Ali to I am Legend to Pursuit. He does a lot fo entertaining films and some serious roles and he is good in all of them. I mean no matter how bad you might think his films are, he stands out and is usually the only reason they are good, thats a great actor for yeah.
  • Tom
Looks like a great role for Smith, and maybe a great feel-good movie for the holidays. The man can act, no question, and I'm always happy to see Woody Harrelson in a film.
  • Claudia
If I wasn't aware of the plot of the movie, I would think this trailer looks a lot like the trailer of "Nights in Rodanthe". I know the story and more or less how it will play, but I don't know, doesn't look very impressive.
  • Pentarix
Nice use of the Gladiator soundtrack.
  • AJ
Thats the same score used in Elizabeth: The Golden Age....that one turned out well
  • polt
What is this? Some kind of epic drama?
  • roi930
this not gladiator soundtrack' is from the movie "the island"' this name fo the score is "my nime is lincolen"
  • roi930
and the look like the best drama of this year!
  • Captain Awesome
    Crash 2
  • "The trailer looks promising, but early reviews from test screenings haven’t been nice, calling it “a bit too heavy handed for its own good”, pointing to its predictability and uneven pacing as weak points, and Smith’s performance as the film’s strength."

Sounds just like Pursuit of Happyness.

But anyways, this looks like a family-friendly (if anyone thinks this won't be PG-13, think about Smith's track record recently) version of 21 Grams. And while I don't think that's a good thing, I'm sure I'll be moved. I agree, Chris.
  • The trailer's musical score and the unknown element of Smith's intentions have me hooked on wanting to see it.

Looks like a good supporting role for Harrelson, who probably has more talent than we know.

I hated I Am Legend and never saw Hancock, but I enjoyed Pursuit Of Happyness and there's a good chance I'll see this movie.

Also nice to see the supporting cast rounded out by talent like Michael Ealy and Barry Pepper.
  • McGruff
Yeah, didn't sound like Gladiator to me. Maybe I'll check out the island soundtrack now. otherwise, it's easier to cut a good trailer than it is to make a good movie. that said, it still looks promising.
  • frank
erm.....this looks like a nice movie and all but..uh do you have anymore updates on Transformers 2: Ride of the Fallen?
  • 790
    Uh another Will $mith vehicle,,,
Daaaaammmmmm I'm sick of this alien.

Whens the El Ron Hubbard film coming out?
  • Meli
I didn't find the trailer all that interesting, but I really like Rosario Dawson, so I may give this movie shot when it comes out on DVD.
  • se7en
    I'd hit that.
  • Ghost
I'm not such a big fan of Smith, but I prefer him in films like these where he's not over the top.
  • Seven reasons your girlfriend/date is gonna wanna see this movie:

    1. Chick flick
    2. Tear jerker
    3. Feel good movie
    4. Weekend canceled with the boys
    5. You must pay attention, later she will ask questions about it.
    6. Payback is a bitch
    7. You might get laid?...
  • I'm intrigued, not excited but intrigued.
  • Stoned One
Wow. Will Smith is just darling these days, first he is a drunk superhero in his Summertime and tear-jerking IRS agents in Wintertime.

This doesn't look good, it looks like it someone took a shit, smeared Vaseline on the lens, and surrounded it with Bunnies and Christian values. It looks over-sentimentalized for its own good.

This film looks like someone took a Chicken Soup for the Soul and shot it.
  • detective comic
will smith has proved himself to be a great actor time and time again and even tho' I'm not into chick flix, I would see this just cause i know he's gonna give it the depth that would make it a guy movie as well
  • moulie
You're a pussy for removing the trailer! Bowing down to corporate fat cats...
  • Captain Awesome
How many "Oh, Hell Naw's!" out of 5 would you give it?
  • edc
this is part two of 21 grams, right?
  • I'm sure the movie will be fine at best but Will Smith has the amazing ability t make everything he's in seem a lot better than they really are. I'm sure it will be better than HANCOCK at least.
  • kizzle
This movie looks great. I cant wait to see it.
  • Kokushi
Smith is a good actor but lets not forget Wild Wild West and MI2, but he need to balance the blockbuster a little, dont do them for a year and see what happen.
  • Interesting ideas about how someone would go about paying penance for some terrible secret in their past.

It's "Hard Eight" for the masses.
  • When I first saw this trailer I felt as if I had stumbled upon an episode of My Name is Earl. The whole good Samaritan routine seems a little slow and done right boring if you ask me. Sure the acting will be great, but if the story is lagging and the message is kinda lame why would I fork out 11 dollars. Hopefully I'm wrong.

THIS WILL BE ONE SUPER SAPPY FILM!!!!!!!!!

    TOTAL CHICK FLICK!

no self respecting guy should ever see this............

I DONT CARE IF IT WOULD GET YOU LAID, YOU'LL HAVE TO LIVE WITH THE SHAME OF SEEING A GIRLFRIEND MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Ohiofile
Wow! A Scientology film. Just count the number of Scientologists in this film. Will, Cruise's son, that guy from Battlefield Earth. I'm sure that there are more. And then the whole plot idea of one man's ability to become enlightened and change the lives of others. Sounds like Cruise's interview in which he was talking about a Scientologist's necessity to get out of their car and help another if that person is in need. Amazing. And they're going to ram this one right into the Best Picture category. Mark it. Captain Amazing said it: Crash 2 - The Search for Curly's Gold
  • MontessoriMom
Don't know if Will Smith's character became enlightened ... versus looking for forgiveness. Toward the end, Will/Tim states that he needed to know that Ezra was "slow to anger". In the Bible, Galatians chapter 5 talks about the Fruit of the Spirit which are: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance. We learn from scripture that these are not individual "fruits" from which we pick and choose. Rather, the fruit of the Spirit is one ninefold "fruit" that characterizes all who truly walk in the Holy Spirit.

    POSSIBLE SPOILER!?

I'm taking a wild shot in the dark but it looks like he's going to give his organs to these people. The girl with a heart condition and the blind guy. He will give up his heart and eyes for these people, maybe a liver and kidneys too.Seven pounds sounds like how much his organs would weigh.
  • Bob
I love Will Smith. He is my second favorite actor, right behind Mark Walhberg. I think that they are both underrated. I loved the trailer. I believe that Will Smith is the only actor now in Hollywood, who can carry a movie all by himself, the way that Tom Hanks used to be able to do when he was stranded on the island. I made the mistake of speed reading a couple of other people's comments, and now I know a little more about the movie than the trailer showed, and I feel bad about that. I love walking into a movie not really knowing that much about it, but it still sounds and looks like a great movie. I am going to give myself an early Christmas present and go and see it on its release date of December 19th.
  • MSO
The seven pounds are seven organs, one to be donated to each of seven people. Heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, corneas, pancreas, bone marrow.
  • Laura
The brain weighs seven pounds on its own, so I think that's what the title is about. They chose the brain's weight because it's the same number as the number of people that he killed in the accident and the same number that he wants to save. Therefore, he'll probably send himself into a brain-dead comatose state, and leave instructions for 7 of his organs to be donated to 7 of those people.
  • helen
DUHHHHHHHHHHHHH Serena! it was done on purpose.....lord have mercy lol
