Edgar Wright Has Seen… Star Trek?

Edgar Wright has seen one of next Summer’s big blockbusters. I’m pretty sure the film in question is JJ Abrams’ Star Trek. I mean, its not like one of his best friends and regular lead actor Simon Pegg has a part in the film or anything. Here is Edgar’s blog on the subject:

I am a lucky bastard…

Yesterday I saw a film that does not get released until next summer.

I can’t say much more than that, except that it delivers all the goods sorely lacking from a certain trio of prequels.

Exciting stuff.

That is all.

    trio of prequels?
  • Dr.Doc
edgar wright and kevin smith (2 of my heroes) have both hinted at the fact that Star Trek is going to be epic. this has me very excited for this flick. this, wolfman and watchmen are at the top of my list.

and im not a trekkie at all! i dont really care for any of the tv series! but im so excited for this flick!
  • Jaybee U Tler
yeah, trio of prequels? is this guy such an idiot that he thinks Star wars and star trek are the same thing?
  • May
um...i thought Trek was coming out in November.
  • Aeghast
    probably summer in Europe
  • Oi Vey
    @ Jaybee U TIer

Umm...dude. Did you actually read what Edgar wrote there? When people write 'from a certain (blank)", please read between the lines because you don't look too bright yourself.
  • Alex
This could also be Terminator. But I'm not so sure.
  • J.D.
I saw it too. The difference: Spock's ears point downwards. Pointy earlobes.
  • Jason
Star Trek? He's clearly talking about Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian. Which will, of course, be the movie to beat next summer!
  • Eric
Could he possible be talking about Terminator: Salvation? trio of prequels makes sense since there have been more than 3 star trek movies.
  • Oi Vey
    @ Alex

I doubt that it's Terminator whereas the first two Cameron movies are regarded as classics. Edgar's comments are suppose to be 'insulting' in a funny UK way.
  • Eric
you're right. there are 9 Trek movies.
  • Jaybee U Tler
Impossible. people in the Uk are incapable of being funny. Which version of the Office won the emmy? :0
  • Uhhh trio of prequels? Star Trek?

There is a trio of prequels for Terminator, Fast and Furious, Race to Witch Mountain..but not Star Trek.

In my opinion he's a fan of the fabled Disney series of Witch Mountain.
  • Oh and all of those movies have a 4th one coming out in 2009
  • dlb
I think he's referring to the attention to detail that is not present in star wars... but that's just me
  • Ben Nadler
Wow, you're either all being incredibly sarcastic or apparently you don't understand humor.

Let's re-read this sentence: "I can’t say much more than that, except that it delivers all the goods sorely lacking from a certain trio of prequels."

So, what is Wright doing here? Well, he is a huge geek and he is obviously not mixing up Star Trek and Star Wars - he definitely knows the difference.

What he is making is a comparison! Surprise! I guess because you need help from Captain Obvious to understand humor, he should have really said this:

"I can’t say much more than that, except that the new Star Trek delivers all the goods sorely lacking from the Star Wars prequels."

He isn't confused, he is simply saying that Star Trek involves real acting talent and a plot, and that it doesn't have Jar Jar Binks.
  • spikeshinizle
For those of you who are confused about the "trio of prequels" line, I took it as though he was saying "The new Star Wars movies sucked, but the new Star Trek movie does not"... Am I the only one who thought this? Since they're both franchises which have recently been revisited.
  • Xerox
I'm about to start work on Edgar's next film "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World"...

    I'll ask him.
  • For the record:

I didn't really think he was referring to the Witch Mountain series.
  • Steve
    @ Ben Nadler

Thank you. Someone else who got it. Loved the Star Wars slam.

Can't WAIT to see this movie...
  • Jamie
Spike, that's how I read it.

Also I think they should stop screening this film since it's not coming out for another year. By that time, there will be absolutely no one who does not know every single moment of celluloid in the picture.

JJ is clearly chafing at Paramount's ultra imbecelic delay of this film. But he's going to shoot himself in the tuchus.
  • Sean
am i the only one whose thinking he saw terminator salvation hence trio of prequels.
  • Oi Vey
    @ Sean

Yes, you and that other guys are the only one. You need to re-read Edgar's statement, because he was saying that these 'trio of prequels' are dissapointing.
  • Oi Vey
    @ Sean

I meant 'you and the other guy'. not plural. OPPs
  • semper
Thanks Ben Nadler for explaining it so I don't have to.

Last time I checked (feel free to correct me) there's only ever been one trio of prequels to a pre-existing film series - Star Wars Eps I - III, which (what a coincidence!!) Wright is on record as not exactly being a fan of. See Spaced Series 2 for many, many examples.

Also, WTF is with people calling T1 or T2 (or even T3 for that matter) prequels? That's like saying The Matrix was a prequel of Matrix Revolutions.

His best friend is in Star Trek and both he and Pegg are matey with JJ Abrahms. On the other hand, McG has no friends. Which one do you honestly think he's talking about?
  • Marty J
Nerds do love to gargle on each other's private parts don't they. Isn't Edgar Wright only 5ft 4? That means I could easily kick his ugly little backside when I see him (inside a comic-book store, arguing about which is the best 'Transformer').
  • @Marty J
Uwe Bolle is also someone who likes to fight people he thinks are lame. Good company!

Edgar Wright is one of my favorite directors working and I am really excited he's endorsed this.

He's slamming Star Wars for sure.
  • danno
Has anyone actually read what he wrote, I mean, actually read it?
  • Steve
I think he's referring to the fact that the star wars prequels (before any plot info, or titles, or trailers, or information of any kind leaked out) were supposed to be a new generation's epic sci-fi movies, but then instead failed on an epic level, and that the new star trek movie won't (which I'm hoping is true).
