When I first heard about JCVD, I imagined a b-list action comedy like My Name is Bruce. When I finally saw the film at Fantastic Fest in Austin, I was shocked to find that the film is actually a character drama about a down on his luck b-list action star who steps into a bad situation. It’s a movie about a guy who plays the hero on the big screen, but not in real life, and what happens when he is put in a situation which forces him to step up. The most surprising thing about JCVD is that it totally goes against every preconception you have about Jean-Claude Van Damme. You might even leave the theater talking about his performance. Seriously. The American trailer for the film was released on Yahoo over the weekend. Watch it below and tell me what you think in the comments.

Official Plot Synopsis: Being Jean-Claude Van Damme is tough. Sure, he is an internationally recognized celebrity (and possibly the world’s most famous Belgian), but this star seems to have fallen from grace with a recent history of direct-to-video flicks. But the “Muscles from Brussels” is back! In JCVD, Van Damme plays himself – with all his foibles in plain view – in this comeback story of a screen hero who has been on the receiving end of kicks that are getting harder and harder to take. Directed by Mabrouk El Mechri, JCVD is a rollicking action-comedy that explores the nature of fame.

JCVD will hit theaters on November 7th 2008.

Definite potential with the film. I hope it's more than just a bunch of Jean-Claude is old and broke now jokes.

But still, even if it is a cinematic disappointment, it could still end up being a fun film to watch at the very least.

Wow. I'm there. Can't be worse then the slew of stuff he's been in in the past couple of years.
  • Mag

Thank you for turning me onto this.

Double Impact was the first violent action movie I was exposed to as a child...and growing up I followed a majority of his movies up until the one with Dennis Rodman then the quality went down a slippery slope...

JCVD looks like everything that the classic films were...yet it still seems like a fresh take...I had a chance to watch this but it was in French without English subtitles...they were speaking a little too fast for my rusty understanding of the language..looked amazing though...

Nice to see Van Damme back in a movie. I loved his movies when I was younger. Amazing.

remember when thomas hayden church had that career changing/saving turn in 'sideways'? i hope this does the same for jcvd. i realize the films & actors are completely different, but it'd be cool to see the guy get some good out of the norm roles.

When I first watched the trailer couple months ago, I was like, "Are you fucking kidding me? Jean-Claude Van Damme has a new movie... playing himself??" I knew I had to see this.

can't wait to see this, but also i think this film is almost a logical step for him. We know about the troubles in his personal life as it's plastered all over the place. Because of that, it adds a depth of realism to this film and makes it probably all the more believable to a certain degree.

Love Van Damme, best film for me is Blood Sport. But i have to agree in the past a lot of his films have been pretty bad. This however, looks very promising.

have seen it on the hamburg fantasy film festival. it's fun, and there's a monologue in the middle of the film that is groteque and absurd, but fascinating and sentimental at the same time. far from a perfect film, it has quite a niumber of great moments (and an even greater number of small, wonderful ones). I would recommend it to all of us who watched the van damme movies back when he was a star (that is, when we were young). it's like watching an indie action flick and a reflection on the genre at the same time. Some laughs, some nostalgia and some action. Good entertainment. I enjoyed it a lot.

am i othe only one who thinks IN HELL was his best film?
  • Blackstar
Nah nah, his best film was when he was hired to play the "Predator" back in '87 and had to wear this horrible costume and kept passing out. Then after whining about the heat so much he got fired. They had to call in Stan Winston to make a new Predator character.

That movie or his early gay porn work. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgEDIgDaZoo

Either I think would be good choices for his best film.
  • This looks really good.

JCVD what a surprising movie!!! I never really saw any of his previous movies..but WOW! on this one. It really touched my heart...
  • SLP
This movie has depth and JCVD can really act. I believe all that he has gone through in his life, has given this movie it's heart and soul. In the movie when he states that he has done nothing with his life, I sat there and thought to myself "oh JCVD, you are so wrong" I wish him continued sucess.
  • Susan
Wow! what a surprising good film-this is a must see..
  • Nathan
I think everyone has had the same experience. It is awesome. It is a heartfeld dramatic tale of his career and current prediciment. The monologue scene is awesome. Go see it if you havn't. Its his best movie by far, just read the reviews.
