You might remember that in June we reported that director Louis Leterrier was making the claim that Captain America had a brief cameo/easter egg in The Incredible Hulk.

“As a filmmaker and as a fan, I like to go see movies and watch them several times, … and every time I see it, discover little things in the background,” director Louis Leterrier said. “Did you know that in Iron Man, Captain America’s shield can be found somewhere? Well in Hulk you might see Captain America Himself!”

Of course, everyone went to the theater and saw the movie, but no Captain America. The director then changed his claims, saying the scene in question was actually in one of the scenes that was cut from the finished film:

“There’s a point when Bruce Banner gives up on his quest for the cure and decide to kill himself. So he travels far North and reaches the Arctic Circle. You might have seen bits of it in some of the promos. The result was a very dark and strong scene, which Marvel, me and everyone else’s considered to be too hard to young audiences to take, so we’ve cut it. Having that said, when Bruce arrives at his destination he meets up with Captain America! At some point this week, we will make it available on the internet but I cannot tell you where or when and the material will definitely be on the DVD.”

Well now the DVD is out and our friends at FilmSchoolRejects went through the deleted scenes frame by frame. The result is the screenshot of the Captain buried in the Arctic. If you look closely you can see his shield. I’ve been told its much clearer on the blu-ray disc, but no one has been able to do a HD screen capture yet.

Update: We’ve since added a few clearer photos which were posted in the comments.

I still get a lot of emails asking me how if the Captain America movie is set during World War II, how the Captain will appear in The Avengers film. This is the answer, he becomes frozen in the Arctic.

Cool, if it werent for that shield that is clearly visible when zoomed in 10 times, I would have thought it was a rock.
  • kfizz
Well any thing looks like a rock in the snow.
  • Palmer
I dunno, it could be anything. It could even be a Wendigo.
  • MonkeyMafia
Looks more like a younger member of the Palin family than Cap's shield...
  • CartoonDude
I like that there's this little easter egg in the deleted scene but I can't help but nag that it's not the Cap's signature WWII shield.

I understand that the shield that is shown is more recognizable, which is probably the reason why they used it, but I can't help but hope in the Captain America movie he uses his WWII issued shield and not the 20th - 21st century one.
  • The Iron Avenger
Doesn't the DVD come out on the 21st???
  • Doc Comic
Much better version is available here: http://i35.tinypic.com/2hrmhrb.jpg
  • Brendan
umm... am I the only one that doesn't see it? It looks like a big pile of shit in the snow to me...?
  • edc
cartoondude - no offense, but that fact that someone could nitpick htis little piece of fluff - not calling you names or anything, just made me smile.
  • edc
"umm… am I the only one that doesn’t see it?"

    yep.
  • edc
    non snarky answer:
try messing with the saturation in ps, look for the red vertical stripes next to the shield, thats his suit, the other dark red bit is his gloved hand.
  • Ummm, I can see it, but is that supposed to be his shield or body?

P.S. "edc", how do you know it is his body?

    I can't see a body!!! Please help!!
  • andy
wait is he the big structure thing? i didnt know he was a giant...
  • WAIT!!!!!

How is that the Cap?! He looks way to big.
  • Goobity
That's a cameo? Quite a stretch, and based on nothing but a fuzzy image of shadows...
  • Dumbledore Calrissian
  • dave
does anyone have a screen cap of the Daily Planet newspaper, supposedly in TDK??
  • orange cinema
i posted the other day that no way was it cap, but i thought they were talking about another scene during the final fight with hulk and abomination (which is been the source of debate also). this looks pretty legit, and is a cool easter egg.

it's another benefit of marvel doing their own films, they don't have to worry about which characters can and cannot cross over.
  • Brian
Still not convinced...sure it looks like that if that's what you're looking for and people say that's what it is. The human mind will look for things that could resemble it and then put it together as the real object.

Until an official statement has been released I'm not convinced.
  • orange cinema
also, i'm suprised that there are alot of emails asking how cap can be in the avengers. isn't it common knowledge that he was frozen until present day?
  • Prophecy_Projectz
How the hell is anyone gonna spot that??!!!

    lol
  • I kept staring at the first picture and couldn't really tell but in that second picture it became crystal.
  • Bull
    This "cameo" fucking sucks.
  • Mr. B
Ditto on the WWII shield comment but otherwise it's pretty cool. For all the complainers that they "don't see it", it wouldn't be an easter egg if it was easy to see or find.
  • M&Co
Is this like one of those magic eye things?
  • evanz
I hate parroting an SNL bit, but "Reeeeallllly?"
  • Whoa.... That is cool. but wait, I thought that the DVD comes on out the 21st?
  • Jamie
It also looks like the CG people wrote something above it in the ice? I can't make it out though...

    http://i35.tinypic.com/2hrmhrb.jpg
  • The big black part is the shield right??
  • andy
Stark: no. thats what some call...A GAPING HOLE.
  • Wait, the director said Hulk meets Captain America.

But according to this, he doesn't even meet him.

There's just an avalanche, a quick shot of the Cap, then it's over.

I thought Banner would at least stop and say,

    "Who is that"?, or something.
  • Wall•E Plays Pong
    I see Venom.
  • andy
WHY IS HE SO BIG? HUMANS ARENT HUGE. maybe its just REALLY zoomed in...lol
  • Deck Mackenzie
Uh, not to nitpick but Cap's WW II triangular shield was only used in the early days of his career (1940-41). By the time he was frozen in the closing days of the war, he'd gotten his trademark round shield we know and love. That's the one pictured in the snow above.
  • Clint Barton
So if this part was included in the film, it must have taken place before Tony Stark became Iron Man; since Captain America's shield was in Iron Man...
  • Patrick Ramser
Uhhhhhhm, now wait... isn't the reason Captain America can appear in The Avengers due to his slowed aging? He fought alongside Logan in World War II and gained slower aging due to being put through some crazy government project (like Logan).
  • NINJARTIST
I think the CG workers might have been a little disgruntled:

  • spoilerkid
damn i do see him maybe at the end of the cap movie he is seen walking in the artic nd he falls asleep nd gets frozen then in the beggining of the avengers movie u see iron man cruising nd he spots cap nd takes him to his lab but thawes em out nd cap doesnt have powers for now nd i think ther gonna put in that his dad invented the serium nd tries to do it nd like dat i think idk but i did hear that at the end of iron man 2 they tel stark that he has a member for the team nd they say caps name thats for sure wats gonna happen
  • Jamie
    Try periods.
  • Jamie
Boy, it really does look like they wrote "EAT SHIT" on the mountainside.

    Hmm.
  • orange cinema
    @ patrick ramser:

here's the deal: cap & red skull fall out of an airplane during an explosion towards the end of WW2. cap is lost to the icy waters but is simultaneously frozen. i can't remeber if namor is the one who finds him & alerts nick fury, but anyways cap is thawed/resurected during a forming of the avengers. yes he does have a 'delayed aging' similar to logan - though not as powerful - but it is the ocean freeze that is used to explain his 'non-aging' between WW2 and that avengers formation. (that's the comics, i assume the movie will do something similar - if not identical)

there is a nice scene after all of the civil war stuff, where tony stark, namor, and a few others place steve roger's body to final rest near the same spot in the ocean where he was frozen for all those years. btw: it was disgusting to have stark at that 'true' funeral, because that fucking turncoat wanna be 'W' is the reason cap is dead in the first place. i'm still waiting for Thor to kick the unholy shit outta stark and reed richards for cloning him, thus leading to the death of bill foster and...ahhh don't get me started! i just re-read civil war and got worked up all over again! i'll be very disappointed if that loose end isn't addressed in secret invasion, seeing as though Thor just returned after a lengthy absence. god i'd love to see a full splash page of the mighty Mjolnir slamming down on the balls of those arrogant assholes...ahh there i go again...
  • Dusty
goddamit, I totally agree. The civil war just made me loose TOTAL respect for ANY of the pro-registrationers, especially Richards, as Stark sort of redeemed himself.
  • orange cinema
btw, they chose a really awkward pose to have cap lying in. like he's lying on a table at the morgue, and his head is part of the rocks? it's that pose that now has me questioning wether or not this is legit. but the shield is pretty undenyable.
  • orange cinema
sorry for the mutliple posts! considering the fall he took, that pose is pretty unrealistic, and his shield placement absolutely unbelievable. they must be going in a different direction than the books.
  • Palmer
Since a clearer version came out, I have to see that's a pretty crappy cameo. I mean at least in Iron Man you can see bits and pieces of Cap's shield clearly, and you know....Nick Fury. And of course The Incredible Hulk with Tony Stark. But this "cameo" of Captain America just doesn't fly right with me. It's like watching the Zapruder film!
  • danno
I want my 55.5323 seconds back.
  • AzureTrayl
orange cinema, half of your wish is granted, if you read the beginning issues of Thor within it's current volume (Issue 3, I beleive), You will see, Thor unleash a whole can of whoop-ass on Tony for cloning him and causing the death of another with that monstrosity. As for Reed, nothing on that matter.
  • Steelo
It's all comic book. I'm sure Captain America in the arctic will be explained soon enough
  • My Name is Required?
Okay for all you geniuses who are like "Why is he in the ice, I don't get it!" Listen up, Captain America was at the end of the second World War was frozen in the Artic after falling from a rocket. Got that so far? Now the whole time he's frozen there in the ice.. Like what we see in the picture and the reason why they don't talk and stuff is because people he's frozen.. You know like stuck in ice? And because it's Namor who get's him out of the ice, villagers were admiring the frozen idol and Namor broke the ice and his body fell into the water where The Avengers found him and made him their leader. So the ONLY WAY that we could see Captain America in this movie is if we see him frozen. There is no possible way for him to be alive/awake or what ever it would be because he is found AFTER The Avengers are created. So how can anyone say that this was a bad "Cameo" as someone said. Like seriously... How can you say something like that and then still call yourself a comic fan? Like what the hell are you commenting here if you don't have your info right? Like seriously.. If your going to make comments about comics... Do some research first if anything.
  • Is the pic REALLY ZOOMED IN, or is he just extra big?
