First Look: Robert Downey Jr as Sherlock Holmes

Just Jared has scored the first photos of Robert Downey Jr. in costume on the London set of Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes.

Anthony Peckham’s script is based on a mixture of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic tales and the Lionel Wigram comic book adaptation which presents a more active version of the famous detective. Jude Law stars as Holmes’ trusted colleague Dr. Watson. Rachel McAdams is Irene Adler, Sherlock’s love interest. Mark Strong is on board to play the villain Blackwood.

    I really hope that this movie is original.
    Downey Jr has been resurrected. But can he pull of what Peter Cushing or Basil Rathbone did.... ?

    But at least the film could be shot in color.. LOL thanks Technicolor.

    Shoot all these Great Modern Directors (Guy Ritchie, Tim Burton, Guillermo del Toro) name a few, are working on Literature Classics.
    If theses movies have a 2010 release it's going to be a great time in movie history!!

    I'm a huge sherlock holmes fan. But this honestly looks awful... He looks like he's playing chaplin again.

    just because he wears the same fuckin hat does not make him charlie chaplin.
    its not all in the image, and honestly if you compare the two the difference is very apparent.

    Man, RDJ looks old in these pics. I feel like he's going to have a tough time being Iron Man if he goes on for too much longer in the role.

    Nice that it looks like they won't use the famous, and silly, trademark Sherlock Holmes hat. The character has to go beyond props like that at this point. If the story works, it'll be awesome.

    RDJ looks older but still has his youngish charm. I think it's due to his hard life in the past; otherwise, he would've been aging gracefully, like Johnny Depp or Brad Pitt, who look very young for their ages.

    I'm not too sure what to think about this film..on the one hand I loved RockNRolla, now I'm feeling that Ritchie is back....but on the other hand this a semi-period piece with a lot of action....neither are things you think of when Ritchie is involved....I'll just hope for the best

    Hmm. Quite a departure from the classic tweed and flatcap, but maybe these are his non working clothes. The concept is still damn interesting with the cast.

    Still, Tony Stark isn't supposed to be that old. I guess they could further work his age into the story, but in the comics at least Tony Stark is traditionally pretty young looking (nevermind the bachelor /playboy aspect of his character becoming somewhat of a stretch). Not too pressing of a matter, I guess, makeup can do wonders.

    It's almost appropriate that downey play holmes. Both have experience with addiction to drugs and can be pretty arrogant when they want to be. Am I right or what?

    Robert Downey Jr was OBVIOUSLY kidding. Im not too sure why some people didn't pick up on his sarcasm.
  • he looks like Chaplin meets The Joker. I like RDJ, and I'll watch whatever he is in, but I have absolutely zero faith in Ritchie - he's a one note hack.

  • Not bad. I can see him pulling off Sherlock Holmes. But the thing is, there are all these other interpretations of Holmes, so we'll have to wait until we see a trailer or leaked footage.

  • Yeah I agree it looks a little goofy in this picture but I'm hoping when it's in context it will look better and hopefully the story will be interesting. Fingers crossed.

    I am interested to know how in line with CD's books he will be for example- in the books he was portrayed as having Grey eyes. Contacts maybe???

    Hmm . . . I'm a little worried to see how this will work out. Look up ANY of the original SH pix, and he doesn't look a thing like Robert Downey Jr. Ah, well, I'll have to be patient and see how this works out.

  • Sorry ... After Jeremy Brett this just looks hollow. The shots I have seen do not convay Victoria's England in costume or the look and grooming of the leads. The description of Holmes does not come close to the looks of RDJ. A fine actor RDJ is as well as Jude, I think Richie has miss cast two fine actors. Jude was actually an actor with Jeremy Brett in one of the English PBS series many years ago. He played a young teen.
