Casting Rumor: Ryan Gosling as The Green Lantern?

Our friends at Latino Review are reporting a rumor that Warner Bros wants Ryan Gosling to play Hal Jordan aka The Green Lantern in the upcoming DC comic book adaptation. The comic book book series never grabbed me, so I don’t know much about the Lantern. But one thing I am sure of is that Gosling is a great talent. Nominated for an Academy Award in 2007 for his performance in Half Nelson, Gosling also received numerous critic association awards for his performance in Lars and The Real Girl. The actor is in the same age range as Jordan is in the latest screenplay draft. Last week it was reported that Lantern is being fast tracked for a Spring 2009 start date.

The Green Lantern character was created by writer Bill Finger and artist Martin Nodell in All-American Comics #16, published in July 1940. The Green Lantern possesses a power ring that gives him control over the physical world as long as the wielder has sufficient willpower and strength to wield it. Hal Jordan is the second and probably most famous character to bear the title.

Discuss: What do you think of Ryan Gosling as The Green Lantern?

  • OMG It's Russell Crowe
    I approve. Gosling's a talented guy.
  • R_McCall
Hmmm, I dunno. I can't say I like the movies he's been in too much but I can see his appeal. This sounds like it could be an interesting choice - put me down for an even bet each way...
  • YoungZe
Don't know nothin' about the Green Lantern, maybe i should.
  • Ryan Gosling will definitely do great things playing Hal Jordan. I definitely think having someone who is as talented as he is playing Jordan is an incredibly smart pick and could make Gosling a superstar.
  • The Burg
    love gosling
    but not as lantern
    especially not hal jordan
maybe guy gardner at a stretch
    ever kyle rayner
  • Alex Tamayo
"Hal Jordan is the second and probably most famous character to bear the title."

Hal is the first human Lantern, not the second. And Peter I truly recommend you to read the actual run of the Green Lantern series. It is so popular lately that DC Comics is planning on making their next year main event base on the them.
  • @ Alex Tamayo: Technically, Alan Scott was the first Green Lantern.
  • Oh and I definitely agree that the current run of GL is fantastic :)
  • D
gosling is a great actor so i approve
  • If you're interested in Green Lantern, you should check out the recent Sinestro Corps War, it's one of the best comic stories of the past decade.
  • Hendo
ehhh I don't know about Gosling... He's a good actor but he just doesn't strike me as Hal. Hal is super charismatic, sure of himself and fearless. Gosling strikes me as more of an “awkward” kind of guy… I’m getting the same feeling that I got when they picked the kid from the OC to play The Flash in the Justice League movie
  • Dan
I love The Green Lantern since I was a kid, was always one of my favorite comic book characters along with DeadPool.

And I must say that I definately approve of Gosling playing Jordan. I'm not a huge fan of a lot of Golsings work since it was a lot of chick flick stuff, IE: The Notebook. But from what I've seen him in, he is definately a great actor and I think he could do very well in this role.

Looks the part, fits the part...and I think he's talented enough to be able to take this role to a new level. (unlike Punisher, Dare Devil, Ghost Rider, Elektra...etc crap etc).
  • Kokushi
Gosling is a awesome actor, f!ck chick flicks,i recommend people to watch these movies: lars and the real girl, half nelson (teacher and crack addict far from a chick flick), The Believer (2001) (nazi skin head, similar to american history x and a awesome movie),Fracture (2007) (very good movie with anthony hopkins) and Stay (2005/I).
  • Hrm. Ryan Gosling or Common? Whom would I want to see play the Green Lantern?
  • spoilerkid
shouldnt they have a black guy
  • E
I really like this pick, I am a huge GL fan and I think Goslin is a very talented young actor. I always picture the actor to play Hal Jordan with a more chiseled square jaw/face, but I think regardless of look Goslin can pull it off really well.
  • W@rm@chine
Sounds good, now who's playing sinestro, and will they use the secret origin stuff?
  • Captain Awesome
He is a good actor. I don't see a problem with his casting. Now I just hope the costume design doesn't suck and actually looks good.
  • antony
there was a really legit review of the script at latino review a while ago. the guy got really hung up on one negative latino stereotype so he knocked it down to like a b minus, which seemed silly to me. as a huge green lantern fan the script sounded like it would make for a great movie and set up as a franchise.

if you don't know much about green lantern you should go to a comic shop and buy green lantern #29-35. the last issue just came out yesterday and it was all about hal jordan. geoff johns knocked it out of the park big time on that one.
  • miggy
YEAH! Ryan Gosling for The Riddler!
  • Wasn´t green lantern black ? Lately I saw him in cartoons as a black man. That would be cooler.
  • Crystal J.
The black man is John Stewart the man Gosling is playing is Hal Jordan. There are a bunch of green lanterns but John is my favorite. I think they should make a film about him too, him and hawk girl. That'd be awesome.
  • orange cinema
-gosling is perfect for this, the same way RDJ, bale & norton are for their films.

-for the guy who doubts his confidence: watch 'fracture'.

-the costume will be important as hell.

-i always thought james marsden could be hal, but gosling is a great choice.
  • Oi Vey
    @ Anthony

Latino Review gave it a B plus

I have watched a few of these movies in question and Ryan does have some serious acting chops. Would like to see him get a little more buff for the role, Hal Jordon is an ace fighter pilot you know.

The ramifications of a Green Lantern movie cannot be fathomed! Think of a Superhero that commands a ring that can do anything that his will power will allow, it is his personal shield, his weapon, it also allows him to travel through space! Yea, you get the picture. Not to mention all the cool special affects and CGI they will dream up for the movie, Green Lantern in my mind could easily outdo any current Superhero movie made! Yes, I said it!

    Green Lantern Rules!
  • Hendo
@spoilerkid it's an origin story. John Stewart doesn't become a green lantern until way down the line. it goes Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner, JOHN STEWART and then Kyle Rayner.

and now before I’m “corrected” by anyone… Alan Scott used the name Green Lantern before all of those named above but that was a coincidence... although it appears the same his power is different. Alan Scott is not a part of the Green Lantern Corps, a group of “inter galactic police” with numbers in the thousands that has existed for thousands of years
  • gah
Sure, if you watch Fracture he displays the cockiness and confidence needed for Hal.
  • shazaaam!
Ryan Gosling is the best new actor out there that i've seen in a lil' bit now that Ledger is gone. If you haven't seen Half Nelson check it out! It's Good to see DC comics is starting to make a movie of one of the big 7 other than Batman and Superman. Just PLEASE DON'T F*&% IT UP!!
  • Mostskillz
    Bad idea...
  • @ Hendo: it's wasn't a coincidence... Alan Scott was the original character in the Golden Age. They just rethought the character afterward and rebooted him for the Silver Age, giving birth to Hal Jordan.

Also the powers are basically the same. The only difference is that Alan Scott's are magic-based.

    Hmmm... I wonder why I'm single :(
  • Brian
Well I can't really see him playing the Lantern, but him and I are from the same hometown so I guess I gotta root for him.
  • hey wait a minute isnt the green lantern black?
  • I thought Common (rapper) was playing the green lantern. I was really excited about that. Hes been great doing movies
  • Steve
Put me down for a ticket if they manage to ink Gosling as the Green Lantern. He'd be a fantastic choice.
  • south texas terror
This sounds like justice league type casting. and I dont like it
  • Palmer
I can see him playing Hal, as long as they don't giving us a middle finger by not going with Hal Jordan as the Green Lantern and all the information that has been released has been some giant complex lie to throw us off.
  • HisPrincess
Hey Payton, Common is rumored as the Green Lantern John Stewart in the new Justice League movie and yes Watanabex -he is black. I think Common would make a good John Stewart. Not sure how i feel about Ryan Gosling yet. As far as the OC kid Adam Brody rumored as playing Barry Allen (Flash) in the Justice League movie, I know he would make a good Wally West, which is Barry Allens nephew who took over as Flash.
    Anywho...just my 2 cents!
  • Deck Mackenzie
Look, Hal Jordan is a bad-ass top gun test pilot not a hipster douchebag. OK? Can we have a REAL MAN play GL, please? You know, 30-something with muscles and stuff. We already saw what happened when you got an emo fuckface to play Superman. Gosling's cool but keep him away from a superhero flick unless somebody's casting Snapper Carr.
  • Seems like someone missed a few hugs in their time...
  • The_gsd
Ive been a GL fan my whole & i just dont like Gosling for Jordan. The needs to wear a goatee to look 20. I think guys like Jim Caviezel, Cole Hauser or Josh Brolin would be better. Or if they want someone younger Garrett Hedlund. Besides i saw Half Nelson and i honestly just thought it sucked. I thought he sucked, the movie sucked it was all just one big suckfest. But hey, thats just my opinion.
