Academy Awards To Feature Exclusive Movie Trailers

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has decided to lift their long-running ban of movie trailers during the Academy Award telecast. But there is a catch: Each movie studio will be allowed to run just one spot (30 or 60 seconds), and that spot must be an Oscar exclusive. Sounds like a good plan to boost ratings.

I think everyone will agree that the Oscars has become increasingly artsy/indie over the last two decades (hey, remember when Raiders of the Lost Ark won 4 Academy Awards?), which probably put off a lot of mainstream filmgoers. The ratings have been in decline. I’m not a sports fan, yet I watch the Superbowl each and every year just to see the new movie trailers and sometimes funny television commercials. Making the show a destination for event-level trailer premieres seems like a great idea. But don’t expect the commercial breaks to be loaded with film trailers as the Academy has limited only one film ad per commercial break.

I think everyone is expecting the studios to promote their upcoming big tentpole films like Angels & Demons, Terminator: Salvation, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, G.I. Joe and others. But who is to say they won’t choose Award-focused films in an attempt to capture the largely college educated upper-middle class viewers that the Oscars normally attract. It will be interesting to see what happens.

Film Advertising has been banned since the first Oscar telecast in 1953 to avoid accusations that studio money influenced the outcome of the awards. To play things safe, the Academy won’t allow any films that are up for an award, or even sequels or prequels to films in contention. Only films that open in the last week of April and beyond will be allowed.

I'd have thought that the ratings are beyond redemption at this point. It's not just the staleness of the show or the painful presentations with "heartfelt" speeches from actors (thanking their agents usually) it's also the fact that we live in 2008 and the insular world of Hollywood backslapping just doesn't cut it in the entertainment stakes anymore. Hell, even I admit that most MTV awards shows are fun and at least part of that "fun" is that they don't take themselves too seriously (behold the sanctimony on display at the Oscars - you'd think these people invented a cure for cancer). If I want my fix of trash celebrity I'll go online and hit a blog (or youtube). Hell, I'll probably watch highlights of this telecast on youtube but I aint gonna waste 3 hours of my life sitting through a bunch of actors and "artistes" kissing each others butts. Maybe I'm just not invested anymore. I see the highlight moments and I love cinema but, seriously I have better things to do with my time. Rant ends here. (I'll also see every one of these trailers on youtube about forty minutes after they first air - y'all know it's true).

One thing will get me to watch this years broadcast - The Dark Knight nominated in every effin category known to mankind... anything less than that and I'll be a no-show. (and even then I'll be flippin channels between the TDK wins/losses).

The Oscars actually looks to be interesting this year. For me there's no sure winner. I don't see Dark Knight winning any category, maybe except best male supporting actor.

Anwyay, I'll be watching. The trailer thing sounds like a good idea.
  • Same step Universal Studios is doing to get more guests in their parks, have exclusive trailers of upcoming flicks. Sounds like good idea, i'm in...

so what? you want the Oscars to honor crappy acting big budget movies like Iron Man and Spiderman?

i am glad the Oscars focuses on artsy, top quality movies. I wouldnt want it any other way.

So I guess I wasn't the only one who realized those indie movies were getting too much love. Yes, many are good, but just because 10 people saw it and loved it doesn't mean anything. Good example with Indy, Peter. In a good amount of cases, big name movies deserve some acknowledgment. I just hope this is true for The Dark Knight.

"I think everyone will agree that the Oscars has become increasingly artsy/indie over the last two decades (hey, remember when Raiders of the Lost Ark won 4 Academy Awards?"

i agree for the most part but is "Return of the King" getting 11 awards already ancient history? it was only 2003.

The staleness comes less from the movies nominated and the acceptance speeches than from the pointless filler ("Solute to Animals in Movies" montage, for example) and the inevitably inane speech from the president of the academy. Does ANYONE watching want to hear from that guy? No.

Having five songs nominated, having better songs nominated, and having the songs sung by the artist would certainly liven things up. I'm thinking more Three 6 Mafia, less Enya. Robin Williams' performance of "Blame Canada" from Southpark: BLU was a great Oscar moment. I'd like to see Jack White and Alicia Keys up there for "Another Way to Die" from Quantum of Solace.

    A new Watchmen trailer perhaps?

Artsy fartsy. Didn't Hidden Dragon Crouching Tiger win some major awards a few years back. That was a stupid kung fu movie. Give me a break.

How are running movie trailers during commercial breaks going to boost ratings exacty?
That's just an excuse for lack of the real answer.
The real answer is AMPAS is part of the movie machine. Its in their best interest for profits to run trailers.
    (Imo)
Ppl that actually savor the commercial breaks have a mental disorder.

The "only thing" that will boost ratings, is for the Academy to shed the old farts that vote for the artsy fartsy films that mainstream Americans don't give a crap about. Nominate TDK and a few other popular films and boom ratings will double.
  • wel this will make academy award more fun.
