The Shining at Timberline Lodge

Fantastic Fest is holding a party at the Timberline Lodge in Oregon, the original filming location of Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. Check out the information below:

In 1980, Stanley Kubrick came to the Timberline Lodge to film one of the all-time great horror classics, THE SHINING. In the film, Jack Nicholson slowly loses his grasp on reality and loses himself in a hallucination of a 1920s era ball. Twenty-Eight years later, Nike Sportswear and Fantastic Fest have joined forces to recreate the very same ball at the very same lodge.

Two ticket options are available for this special night:

VIP Overnight Package:

Dinner at the Lodge
3 Cocktails per person
Live music and shows throughout the evening
Limited Edition Silkscreened Event Poster (seen right, also available on Mondotees.com)
A one-night stay at the historic Timberline Lodge
In-room screening of the film
VIP gift package
Continental breakfast the morning after the party

This VIP Overnight Package is designed for couples who want to stay the night. Ticket price is $100 per person ($200 per room). Note: the regular Timberline room rate is $220/night for just the room. As there are only 50 rooms available for overnight stay, we are offering a “the Gold Room ticket,” a discounted admission to the party for guests not staying the night.

The Gold Room Ticket:

Dinner at the Lodge
3 Cocktails per person
Live music and shows throughout the evening
Limited Edition Silkscreened Event Poster
Round trip bus service to and from the party

Only 200 Gold Room tickets are available for $25 per person.

5:30 PM Gold Room Ticket-holder buses depart
7:00 PM Dinner begins at Timberline Lodge

At the stroke of midnight, all VIP Overnight guests are required to return to their rooms and turn on their TVs for a very special screening of THE SHINING. All VIP guests will be watching THE SHINING simultaneously, but in the privacy of their own rooms.

Note: VIP guests will need to provide their own transportation to the lodge. VIP Overnight guest check-in begins at 6:00 PM on October 31 and check-out is at 11:00 AM on November 1.

Tickets for this event go on sale on Friday, October 10 at 2:00 PM PST at www.shiningparty.com, where you can find additional details and updates about the event. As tickets are extremely limited, we anticipate this show to sell out quickly.

    Sounds fantastic.
  • Gajonka
great idea, but to have everyone scurry to their rooms to see a film they've seen twnnty tiomes is kind of gay. gay.
  • BT
Be warned. The Shining was not shot @ this location. The building was used for the exterior shots but all the interior shots were filmed @ a studio in England & apparently the inside of the Timberline looks nothing like the hotel in the movie.

Oh, and there is no hedge maze @ the Timberline either.

This event is a joke, imo.
  • Father Bradley
Yeah this was for the exteriors only. A better event (if you 'had' to do it there) would be to have an outdoor screening.

Also weren't 'some' of the interiors at a real lodge in Colorado? Or were they all on stages?
  • Kelly
No, the interiors were all stages. However, the made for TV movie The Shining was made in The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, CO. That is where Stephen King actually stayed and was the inspiration for the movie. It is great there! They also have a Halloween party there every year. I highly recommend it!
  • GladiusAngelus
BT is right, wiki it. Not only that but Kings actual inspiration came from a hotel called The Stanley in Estes Park, CO. Which they actually used in the mini series. Nice place, been there once.
  • Captain Awesome
    I want that poster
  • "In 1980, Stanley Kubrick came to the Timberline Lodge..."

Cos he was well known for his jet setting ways.

I'm sure it'll be a swell night, but BT is spot on - nothing was filmed there except exteriors so what's the point? And what the hell does Nike have to do with The Shining anyway? I'll admit it's been a while since I saw it, but did Jack rock a pair of Air Jordans in the movie or something?
  • Allynd D
    More Importantly:

There is a 3 Cocktail limit!?
What the fuck is that? If I'm staying in the Hotel from the Shining I want to get drunk not "tipsy".
  • Brine
    @kale
Nike is based in Portland, which is fairly close to Timberline.
  • Quenfis
Nothing says Fantastic "Thriller" Fest like Nike Sportswear.
  • Lars
It should also be noted that even most of the exteriors were filmed at Pinewood Studios in England. It was really only the opening helicopter master shot of the Timberline that was used, and possibly one other establishing. But the shots of Danny and Wendy being given a tour of the grounds, and the snowy exteriors toward the end were all construction on the backlot of Pinewood.

I'm disappointed that they're trying to say it's a Shining party. If you want to throw a Halloween party at Timberline, that's cool, but don't trick people into thinking the movie was filmed there.

If you forget about the gimmick and you're just looking for a dress up party, this probably won't be bad since Nike is throwing money around like crazy to look young and hip... as long as you don't mind being sent off to your room or down the mountain at midnight. And like other Nike parties this might end up being a bunch of ex-jocks and Nike employees (more ex-jocks). From what I hear around the water cooler this is really Nike's event. I hope I heard wrong and Fantastic Fest has a big part in it.

I agree that an outdoor screening is a much better idea.

I have been to the Timberline Lodge many times, and I never seen anything inside the place that makes reference to 'The Shining'. Or at least not obviously so.
Did I always miss something? If the film was ever that important to those operate the Timberline Lodge, then why hasn't any previous (if any?) recognition of it's connection to 'The Shining' been more evident for anyone to notice that has ever visited the Timberline Lodge? It seems to me that any place, anywhere, that was LUCKY enough to have any kind of real connection to this very brilliant and very famous film, would have long ago created a very special area, or wall, or whatever in recognition of this. But, maybe this 10-31-08 event will spawn a real
and much more lasting tribute? Hope so...

Oh brother people! it's just for fun - no the movie wasn't filmed inside the hotel -- Portlanders know that. It's just a good excuse to go up into the woods, dress up in 20's attire, and have a good time. I think a Shining-themed party on Halloween would be fun anywhere.
  • Sarah
I agree with Christina. Get over yourselves and take the party for what it is...a true COSTUME party with a theme! Wow! And it doesn't have anything to do with fetish/skanky girls in crappy vinyl nurses outfits. And ANYONE who knows anything about Steven King is aware that the film was not shot inside Timberline. Get a grip people. Have some fun.
(and Stevie, there is an axe stuck in a piece of wood at the lodge, referencing The Shining)
  • Jack
FYI to whoever is doubting the theme of this party... they have a very well planned event, there will be lots of surprises and scripted happenings throughout the evening. It will be so much more than just watching the movie in your rooms for the 20th time.
