Netflix Charging $1 More For Blu-ray

Netflix has begun to alert subscribers that a price increase is required for those who wish to rent Blu-ray movies. The surcharge is a result of the additional cost of the next generation format, which sometimes is double that of DVD. The good news is that the surcharge is only $1, and allows you unlimited Blu-ray access under the same rules of your existing netflix account. I was expecting this to happen eventually, but I believed the cost would be a lot more. Bravo to Netflix for keeping it affordable. Thanks to /Film reader sean d for the tip.

Dear Sean,

As you may know, Blu-ray movies are more expensive than standard definition movies. As a result, we’re going to start charging $1 a month (plus applicable taxes), in addition to your monthly membership charge, for unlimited access to Blu-ray movies.

The additional charge for unlimited Blu-ray access will be automatically added to your next billing statement on or after November 5th, 2008 and will be referenced in your Membership Terms and Details. If you wish to continue getting Blu-ray movies for $1 a month more, you don’t need to do anything. If not, you can remove Blu-ray access anytime by visiting Your Account at the Netflix website.

If you have questions about this change or need any assistance, please call us anytime at 1-888-638-3549.

Just a dollar more isn't a dealbreaker. In fact, it's more than fair. But if it were significantly more than that, I'd be super pissed. The fact that they've delivered BluRay for so long without that surcharge would be paramount to a bait and switch if it were a heft increase.

Well thats actually pretty good. No one can be mad. Just think of it like this. The average price of a dvd is 10 bucks. a blu-ray is 30. So thats still a steal.

First it's 1$ for blu-ray, then it'll be 2$ more for unlimited watch instantly ... Soon we'll have to pay 4$ per dvd rented.

if you've got a hdtv and a bluray player, youve got some extra money.
they are raising the monthly fee less then 10% when blurays actually cost 50% more. the more people start switching to bluray, the more they need to spend to stock discs.
    makes sense.

Weird... I got an email from netflix today saying they were LOWERING prices on blu-ray. From $2 extra to $1

"We're lowering your price for unlimited access to Blu-ray movies from $2 a month to only $1 a month (plus applicable taxes), in addition to your current monthly membership charge. You'll see this reduced charge on your next billing statement on or after November 5th, 2008. It will also be referenced in your Membership Terms and Details."

It doesn't cost the production company any more to write data onto a blu ray disk than it does to put data on a standard DVD.

    ...yeah...
  • Joseph Fritzl
calling shenanigans on kevin h's comment.
  • Andrew
Joseph Fritzl is right...call shenanigans all you want.

The price per blu-ray discs are more than a standard DVD disc. Of course blu-ray will over take DVD and they will drop price, but until then a $1 is nothing to complain about.

I'll pay one extra dollar for the enhanced video and sound.

I dunno, for some odd reason I am still grandfathered in under blockbuster's original 19.99 for 3 movies by mail at a time and unlimited in store-rental/exchange. wierd thing is i can rent blu-ray through the mail but cannot exchange for in store blu-ray discs.

I wonder when they'll up how much i pay per month.
