Kevin Smith’s Money Shots - Episode 1

Kevin Smith has released the first episode of his behind the scenes web series “Money Shots” which documents the making of Zack and Miri Make a Porno. The first episode which premiered on Quick Stop Entertainment, is more of an introduction/preview, than anything else. But you get an idea of some of the crazy stuff that we might see in upcoming episodes. Some of you might be wondering why the webisodes have taken so long to begin airing on the web. Apparently the MPAA has become more power hungry, and needs to approve anything that can be considered web promotional material, including behind the scenes video diaries (how crazy is that?).

  • what's that quick image flash at around 1:12 ish... ?
  • Pat
Right after Seth Rogen says "See what a cock I am," there's a flash of something over the studio lamp in the center of the screen.

I don't have the quick trigger finger, but wtf is it?
  • Reggie
Why couldn't Sadam Hussein or Obama Bin Laden bomb the MPAA building instead? These people are seriously getting on my nerves, and they need to lay off Kevin Smith.
  • Chris
Funny shit. When Seth Rogen says "See what a cock I am?" at 1:16 an image of a cock(erel) flashes up next to his head for a frame or two. Gotta love me some Tyler Durden style splicing of cocks into flicks. Also Zack and Miri looks awesome.
  • I got it and I captured it. Its a cock. Like a rooster cock. Not a rooster's cock but a rooster, which people sometimes call a cock for some weird reason. I don't know why, they just do.

    Um, I'd upload it but...help.

    @Peter

I noticed Kenny Hotz from Kenny Vs Spenny dancing in his underwear during the Money Shots intro...he wasn't listed as being apart of the cast, is it just a cameo?

"Apparently the MPAA has become more power hungry, and needs to approve anything that can be considered web promotional material, including behind the scenes video diaries (how crazy is that?)."

I call bullshit on this. This has been reported on Slashfilm before. No way the MPAA is reviewing the thousands upon thousands of multimedia elements put up on the web for film releases.

    Bullshit. Wrong. Incorrect. No.

I don't know if this is something Kevin Smith is misreporting, is being misinterpreted or something Slashfilm is misreporting.

    But there's no way.
  • Jamie
Also, I should add: we're only hearing this regarding Kevin Smith materials.

    Something doesn't add up.
  • Jamie: I know for a FACT, that smith was forced to submit the video diaries to the MPAA.
  • Jamie
You missed my second post. "Also, I should add: we’re only hearing this regarding Kevin Smith materials. Something doesn’t add up."

I think you're misinterpreting. Maybe Kevin Smith was forced to submit his videos, but I have heard nothing, absolutely nothing, that anyone else has had to do this. It would be HUGE news. It would make creating movie websites almost impossible.

I think Smith is leaving something out of this whole thing. Maybe to get an R rating for his film he agreed to submit their web marketing materials.

You're saying "how crazy is that" and I'm saying: Yeah, it's crazy. And I don't think it's happening.
  • Jamie
Clarification: I mean that I don't think it's happening to anyone else. I certainly have no problem believing Smith submitted his videos.

But again, something is not adding up here.
  • Jamie: I'm not claiming that everyone is right now. I think it is mostly horror films and raunchy films like Smith's.
  • Jamie
I can believe that. I thought your post made it sound like they're doing it for everybody.
  • Jamie: Every movie poster in the US must be MPAA approved. That will be standard for internet videos as well. Trust me.
  • Jamie
We'll have to agree to disagree. Posters don't take very long to vet.

Unless they plan on doing a terrible job - which is possible - there is no way they can vet all web promotional materials. It would exponentially increase their workload. It would also make creating production video diaries and such - products that need a timeliness - impossible.

In fact, it is impossible. Such a decision would imply that even if someone like a director wanted to write a blog about his production of a movie, he'd have to submit each blog page everyday to the MPAA.

Again, such a decision would be a HUGE announcement and create waves of objection from filmmakers. I STILL think there is more to the Kevin Smith story. Either Kevin has got something wrong or he agreed to do this for the MPAA to get an R rating.

Anyway, we're going in a loop. We'll have to agree to disagree.
  • check the IMDB, Kenny Hotz is playing "Zack II"
