Anne Hathaway and Helena Bonham Carter have joined the cast of Tim Burton’s 3D hybrid adaptation Alice in Wonderland. Carter is no surprise, as I believe she was already spotted on the UK set. Plus lets not forget that Helena is engaged to the director, and has been given roles, errr, I mean cast in everyone of Burton’s films since Planet of the Apes.

But the bigger surprise is Hathaway, who has been cast as the White Queen, an ally to Alice who has been banished by her sister, the Red Queen (played by… you guessed it, Helena Bonham Carter). You might remember the Red Queen from previous adaptations for the use of the catchphrase “Off with their heads!” No word on if the actresses will be featured as live-action or performance-captured/computer generated characters.

THR claims that in Burton’s adaptation, the White Queen needs Alice to slay the Bandersnatch, a fictional creature mentioned in Lewis Carroll’s poems Jabberwocky and The Hunting of the Snark. The form and size of the creature is never revealed, although in Through the Looking-Glass, the White King snickers that Alice “runs so fearfully quick” that she “might as well try to catch a Bandersnatch!”

  • Pretty sure Burton and Bonham-Carter are actually married.
  • AJ
    Nope. Not married.

Anne Hathaway wanted the role of Johanna in Sweeney Todd but Burton wanted an unknown and wouldn't cast her, big mistake in my opinion. I suppose this is an apology.

Actually it's the Queen of Hearts, not the Red Queen who yells, "Off with their heads!" The two characters are from different books.

    THANK YOU!
  • im sorry to do this again, but, you spelled Bonham wrong in your title. right?
  • Mike
Actually, no, it wasn't The Red Queen who was "off with their heads".

That was the Queen of Hearts. In addition to the chess queens, there are also the card queens.

Thanks for playing though. We have a lovely parting gift for you.

Okay, so know I'm confused...is it Alice in wonderland or Alice through the looking glass?
  • Bull
Is Tim Burton fucking Helena Bonham Carter?
  • Meli
Tim and Helena aren't married, in fact, I'm not completely sure they are engaged, but they are co-habitating with two children.

On the topic of the post, it doesn't surprise me that Helena has been cast in the movie. It is however a nice surprise that Anne Hathaway will join the cast, I think she's fabulous.
  • oh wait you guys, i heard that Burton may be in fact having sexual relations with Helena Bonham Carter
  • dave
I thought Johnny Depp was playing Alice...
  • Harry Lime
Tim Burton needs to disappear from the face of the earth and resurface as a different director who doesn't constantly use Johnny and Helena and the same tired style. The guy's got some talent, but... gehhh...
  • TO HAIRY LIME
Can't u just be happy that we get to see their wonderful talent? I think you're the one thats TIRED, now off with your head!
  • south texas terror
    wow nobody saw that coming

I'd like to echo Germ-13's question. There were 2 books, parts of both books were used for the cartoon, but I've seen a great 2-part movie done with each separately. I want to know if they'll be keeping the stories separate as they should be, or combining them into some new abomination. The red and white queen are from looking glass, they're chess pieces. The queen of hearts, the beloved "off with their heads" queen, is a playing card, and is primarily in wonderland. The red queen is not the same as the queen of hearts.

I was excited to see news of this movie, since I love Tim Burton's stuff, and I love Alice in Wonderland. I seriously hope he isn't going to just make a brand new movie with some of the same character names and (maybe) the same setting.

This is SO mean . . . just coz Burton and Bonham-Carter are a couple does not mean that she shouldn't be given parts in his films . . . he does the same for Johnny Depp . . . obviously he gains inspiration from Bonham-Carters perrmances
