TR2N Will Be Released in 3D

AICN got a chance to chat briefly with TR2N director Joseph Kosinski over the weekend, who revealed that not only was the Comic Con test footage filmed in steroscopic 3D, but the final film will also be filmed and released using the latest in 3D technology. If there is one movie I want to see in 3D, it is a sequel to TRON.

Kosinski was also able to confirm at TRON creator Steven Lisberger is involved as a consultant, and that the external riders seen in the Comic Con preview were actually part of his original design, but deemed too technologically challenged for the original 1982 film. The director also seems confident that the film could be ready for a late 2010 release. It should be noted that the original film was released in July, and TRON doesn’t really seem like a holiday film to me… You can read Beaks full report on AICN.

3D is gimmick that just refuses to die. (And some people really like it, so maybe it shouldn't die.) But it has a spotty history. Consider way back to "Friday the 13th Part 3 in 3D", "Jaws 3D", "Amityville 3D." Not really effective. Then, more recently, you had "Spy Kids 3D", "Night of the Living Dead 3D", and "Journey to the Center of the Earth." Also not really effective.

And that's not me saying that: it's a lot of audience commentary that I've heard. Of course, this isn't to say a film is bad because it's in 3D. Nor am I saying 3D is bad in and of itself. But I guess for me I would like to hear the justification for why.

In other words, if someone was making their pitch to me and said "... oh, and it'll be in 3D", I would want them to explain how that matters to the story and why it will matter to the audience. And I say this because most films that I've seen that utilize 3D tend to do so in an apparent attempt to focus on style over substance. With a film like "Tron," where there is clearly a lot of room for style-focus, this just makes me cautious about what kind of substance we're going to be getting.
  • Oh that's too bad,,,

Dude, FUCK YEAH!!! The idea of seeing the Game Grid in 3D is Kick Ass! I agree with the other skeptics though, as long as it is used to compliment the story, not as a gimmick to cover up the lack of a story, the I'm all for TRON 2 (or TR2N) to be in 3D. Can't wait for an HD release of the test footage (although, even the shaky cam, YouTube quality leak from Comic Con that I saw was enough to get me stoked).

So I have only seen 2 recent movies in 3D, Hannah Montana (little cousins wanted to go and of course I had to take them) and Journey to the Center of the Earth. Now I love the idea of using 3D has long as they keep the story the same, I don't need useless scenes with the actors spitting just because it looks cool in 3D. If they can incorporate the 3D with the storyline, then Im all for it. And I think Tron is a perfect movie to do this.

lightcycles rule. I want one for real. In the meantime I'll spend way too much time playing games like Armagetron, wishing, hoping I'll have a lightcycle one day.

If done right it would be really cool to see this movie in 3D and I agree as well that if any movie should be it is TR2N.
  • first, I am most excited to see Joe Kosinski is going to finally make a movie, Period

His visual sense is so unique and awesome that's unparalleled to anyone else... (His Halo CG commercial is the BEST full-CG piece ever made... coming from someone who has pretty much seen everything CG made in the past 10 years)

I'm so waiting to see the Comic-con teaser in High-Def

I agree with Peter. I'm not a big 3D fan, but if any movie, in the history of films should be shot in 3d, it is a sequel to TRON

ugh. i'm not a fan of fake stuff flying at my face while trying to enjoy a movie.

I am torn about the whole 3D trend. It devolves so easily into a cheap gimmick while other things such as story, character and performance are shorted for razzle dazzle. I guess it just depends. I was still blown away by the Comic Con footage, and probably would enjoy the movie no matter how many Ds it comes in.
