Iron Man director Jon Favreau announced on Thursday’s Howard Stern Show that the Blu-ray edition of Iron Man has already outsold every other blu-ray disc release to date. That’s a pretty impressive accomplishment for only two days on store shelves. Of course, no official numbers have been released to back up Favreau’s claim, but we’ll trust his word for now… It’s believable, and besides, when has he let us down in the past? Favs a good guy. Which is why I’m sad to say that Iron Man’s new record will likely be short lived, as The Dark Knight hits store shelves on December 9th.

Stop saying "of all time" when speaking about technology that's less than five years old!
  • Oi Vey
i still don't know; if blu-ray doesn't get out of the niche market, i'm sticking with DVDs.
  • TheDaftPunk
Again, this will be short lived when The Dark Knight is released on Blu-Ray. Iron Man seems to be living in its shadow.
  • @wumble: when do you make the distinction for being able to us "of all time"?

Question: has there very been a Blu-Ray that sold more than Iron Man?
    Answer: No

What can be said about the Iron Man Blu-Ray: it has sold the most copies of any Blu-Ray of all time.
  • Captain Awesome
"Best Selling Blu-Ray Of All Time"

    haha, come on!
  • YaroMan
    Until Dark Knight Jejejeje
  • Jordan
I don't know why you'll be sad Peter when Dark Knight beats Iron Man. I think it was better than Iron Man.
  • wumble
Because, Mike, that's like a high school kid saying "Best sex of my life!" right after his first time. It's technically true, but it's essentially meaningless.
  • TheDaftPunk
I'd like to say Iron Man was one of, if not the best superhero movie before TDK, but of course, those damn two months...
  • Sad. Just sad. "Black Book" is out on Blu-ray. So is "The Assassination of Jesse James." And this generic crap sells more. Damn, if you want your RDJ fix, get "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" for God sakes. I weep for the mainstream.
  • Oi Vey
but that's the nature of 'mainstream', andrew. This could be the gateway to Downey other smaller films. Well, if the person is smart enough. I hate bandwagon people, however.
  • Captain Awesome
Iron-Man and Batman sitting in a tree...
  • erik
@Andrew well at least in this case the movie they're all buying is actually GOOD. But totally agree on Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. And yes, TDK is going to annihilate this record.
  • Captain Awesome
    Andrew James,

God, I bet Jesse James looks fucking stunning on BR.
  • J.Kerr
I believe it. Went to go pick up a blu ray copy at target and they were all sold out, then i tried circut city and the same thing. Ive never seen a dvd go that fast.
  • Joseph Fritzl
this is the first bluray cover art ive seen that doesn't look like complete shit with the blue plastic border.
  • Matty
    Blu-Ray FTW
  • @Captain Awesome & Andrew James

Don't want to burst your bubbles, but the Jesse James Blu-Ray transfer is crap... I LOVED the movie and own the Blu but its is not as good as it should be, WB dropped the ball on it for sure. It deserves mush more!!

Though I wouldn't call Iron Man generic crap either, def up there with best comic movie yet (along with TDK and I think Hellboy 2)

    @wumble

Actually what you said isn't true at all... That could be true if Peter had said "Resident Evil Apocalypse is the best selling Blu-Ray of all time" 2 days after it came out (since it was in the first batch of titles released.

This is actually similar to middle-aged guy saying it was the best sex ever after he has 714 time (not including with porn stars).

Since there are 714 titles released so far, not including Adult movies.

714 is a substantial sampling size.
  • Rosario
I think everyone is missing the point. It sold more then any Blue-Ray in only 2 days. Yeah its only been 5 yrs but movies have been out for longer then Iron Man and havent sold what its sold. Now of course we don't know what those numbers are but still.

And I think we all know TDK is going to outdo everything.

Oh and I loved the analogy of the virgin, priceless.
  • Captain Awesome
    @ mike

That's fucking tragic. That film deserves to be transferred well. It looks amazing on regular DVD on an HDTV.
  • Jerry Beautiful Baby Butler
isn't it impressive in the light that BM has been one of the more prominent Comic characters in pop culture (a 60's tv show, nearly 20 years of high budget films), and here comes little Iron Man out of nowhere to actually present itself as a realistic rival?

My point again is that batman has had a huge, 4 decade long buildup to this level of fame and hype. Iron Man did the same with 1 movie.

    That takes one helluva movie.
  • Rory
Call me stupid, but I preferred Iron Man to TDK.
  • Ryan
The Dark Knight will double Iron man sales.
reserved copys are already showing that.
  • Presto117
i picked this up tuesday, and it's got an amazing transfer.

but Speed Racer is by far the best looking blu-ray i've ever seen.

the entire thing was shot with HD camera's, so there's not a hint of film grain in sight... *drool*
  • Goobity
@ Ryan (and others): Who cares? If you enjoyed the movie, buy the home version. Until I get a check from studios based on their revenues it doesn't make a bit of difference what was the 'biggest seller'. If you like the product and are willing to pay for it...ain't that enough?
  • great movie, not suprised
  • One of the strongest entries into the superhero movie canon of recent years. While featuring a few flaws, this is one of the most entertaining comic book adaptations in last few years.
  • Ryan
I agree, Its just cool to know
    --------------------------
and @ Jerry that just lets you know Batman films will continue to be made years and years into the future and that iron man will be short lived.
  • The release was so popular that the number of people accessing the BD-Live content online brought down Paramount's servers: http://securityandthe.net/2008/10/04/iron-man-r...
  • John Roberts
I would agree as well, very good to know!

hey peter - jack off the dark knight a little harder!
i mean, it is the greatest film of all time.
  • Ironman really wasn't that good of flick. Agreed, this will be shortlived as Dark Knight will easily trump it.
