VOTD: Don’t Vote - 5 Friends Uncensored

Don’t Vote - 5 Friends Uncensored

The Pitch: A boat load of celebrities explain how important it is to register to vote. Jonah Hill takes the cake with his adlib of “I don’t care, I have so much money!” And you have to love Sarah Silverman’s quip about herpes and “pooping”. Thanks to /Film reader Nader for sending this along.

  • OMG It's Russell Crowe
I think 5 minutes was a bit overkill, but it's nice to see the effort.
  • Synthetic
Ok, that just makes me not want to vote now.
  • R_McCall
That was bitchin. The second I saw Ellen I was like, God No! Go Away - I hate you woman! but then she knocked out the "What're you doing on that thing - watching porn!!" comment about the ole laptop.... dang, I feel as though we share something now (it's like this boring-ass lesbian woman has a window into my mind). I'll say it (but only once), Ellen, you go girl!
  • A very noble effort but a little po-faced and too long.

But once you combine the A-list actors with Z-grade dialogue from Ed Wood's Plan 9 From Outer Space, well, then you've got a powerful call to not let aliens re-animate our dead.

Its a pity, as I was planning to register to vote but didn't as I was planning to do it now, but this video got me caught up, and now I have no time... What a shame... Good video though...

Haha, there are only 3 other comments (as of when I'm posting), thus Peter has only shown 4 friends... lol.

Also, I find Sarah Silverman unfunny (I liked her in School of Rock, but thats it).

**PS I'm in Australia, so me registering to vote in the US Presidential Election would be just plain silly...**
  • Tom
Glad to see the celebs trying to do something good with their fame. I'm Canadian, but I care about this presidential election. The world is watching, so get out and vote!
  • RekLawXeRo
okay, this kinda saddens me as, I do admire several of those stars, but the fact that they buy into media B.S. instead of remembering what they (/we) were all taught in school....
That OUR VOTES DON'TCOUNT. ONLY the Electoral colleges votes count, the whole media adds everywhere, everyone telling you to vote, all of it is a Facade to keep us spending Money, Money that gets Taxed. The whole democracy in our country is a lie.

    (lol...the cake i a Lie!)
    ---RekLawXeRo---
  • Paul
Voting is a scam. All it does is add a stamp of legitimacy to our corrupt government system. Why should I vote for either candidate and take partial responsibility for the crap they pull in office. Also I hate to break it to you but your vote doesn't matter. If you live in a swing state and you can get 100,000 of your closest friends to vote with you than you might make a difference. And finally even if your guy gets into office he will break his campaign promises and work to make sure the special interests that fund his re-election campaign gets whatever they have paid for. Save democracy in America, don't vote 2008.
  • VikingFrog
    RekLawXeRo... you are an idiot.
  • yasb
Just to confirm what Tom said, the world is watching you america.

I'm in Australia where voting's compulsory but i'd vote all the same, it takes less then 15-20 minutes every 4 years.

(Yes video was overkill, 5 minutes? wtf)
  • Boris
Not a citizen nah nah nah nah nah nah nah, I fell bad for those of you citizens who have to deal with this crap all the the time, it never ends!
  • Werner
To all the US people, watch this and register to vote! The road to a better future is in your own hands!
  • Shogun Seth
"I've never done shit on drugs, besides play Halo 2!" Haha, funny...

I always found it interesting that people from other countries say things like, "We are watching". What does that mean? I am not being an ass, I just really don’t know what people mean by that.

I also find it funny that as people from other countries show an interest in American politics, U.S. citizens show their lack of interest. I guess funny is not the word, aggravated would be closer. Also, I would just like to say that just because some of you people had crappy teachers is not an excuse for your ignorance. I hate it when people complain about the electoral collage like it’s something Bush invented to win the 2000 election. We have a Representative Republic, not a Direct Democracy…try not to act shocked and hurt by this information…
  • tanya
I think it's funny that not all of these celebreties are registered to vote themselves, and some of them like Natalie portman for instance aren't even american citizens
  • Mike
    @Paul

You're absolutely right, you're vote doesn't count all by its lonesome. And you're also right in the sense that getting 100,000 friends to vote will make a difference. Obviously no one has 100,000 friends, but like the video says if you tell 5 people and they tell 5 people, there will be an exponential increase of voters. So by voting and telling your friends to vote and tell others to vote will effectively create 100,000 voters to swing that state.

So if you can vote, then vote. If you don't, you're pretty much wasting one of your US rights that so many people don't have. Feel privileged, not discouraged.
  • Ed
    1) Our vote in NJ is no longer counted, The State Senate will decide how our Electoral Collage votes are spent.
    2) I enjoyed the) Gun control thing snuck in there. Bill of Rights? Not here thanks.
    3) Why are Non Americans so interested in how we vote?
    4) for those you don't remember the Pledge we learned in school, this is a REPUBLIC, Not a DEMOCRACY. America was NEVER a DEMOCRACY. Anyone who tells you otherwise is an uneducated idiot.
    5) Hollywood billionaires do NOT have your best interest at heart.
    6) Universal Healthcare works great! Google it in England and see how they have to pull their own freakin teeth because it takes MONTHS to get a doctor to see you... Good thinking.
  • Umm.... tanya: Natalie Portman has dual citizenship in the US and Israel. Djimon Hounsou (the most likely other person you're referring to) is a naturalized citizen. Who else do you think isn't a citizen?
  • Ok, i'm not going to tell you what to do, you are old enough, intelligent (cause you're on /film) but I can say something.

With something like that on my country, maybe that would avoid me Sarkozy...

...Ok, i really have to tell you something after all, please, my president will suck yours anyway, so, please, if you vote, vote for Obama...please.... You'll vote for the politic of MY country too...
  • Scott
Lets see... Everyone complains that the republican party hates the middle class and only helps the rich get richer. So exactly which one of these celeb's is middle class? They all seem to be pushing the democratic party, but I am having real trouble believing that they have any idea what life in the middle or even lower class is like. So, why would anyone follow the advice of overpaid egomaniac actors in the first place? The only reason the average citizen follows the advice of any of these "Dancing monkeys" must be because they are morons.

And for all the non-US Citizens chiming in about the elections, take a look around your own country and fix its flaws before you start talking about mine. Maybe when Australians decide to rise up and overthrow British Monarchy and actually have a decision in how the country is run I will value your opinions. For now, just be happy bowing in front of some idiot blue-blood whose only qualification to rule is that he is taller than the average Aussie.
  • Grofe
Well said Scott. Its obvious who they want us to 'vote' for. Their idiocy is only surpassed by their hypocrisy.
  • Mikey M
Theres a girl in my office who doesnt think she can help. This video is for people like her.
Loved the video but it was a bit long.
  • Aaron
Hey big brother I'm drinking milk...
  • @Scott
"Maybe when Australians decide to rise up and overthrow British Monarchy and actually have a decision in how the country is run I will value your opinions."

are you being sarcastic or are you that ignorant about the political structures of Australia?...or Canada for that matter.
  • Dave
This video really made me not want to vote
  • fex
It's not who votes, but who counts them.
  • Andrew
    Jesus Christ, Hollywood! Condescend much?

Someone please edit it down to just Jonah Hill and Sarah Silverman. That's the video they should have released.

And was Giovanni Ribisi actually reading "The first amendment ... the second amendment ..." from a script?

    Ugh.
  • Bk
All those who argue that voting doesn't matter wouldn't be here living the in the United States without it. These non-voters obviously have no knowledge of achieving progress in government, nor do they care to get involved in the political politics outside of injecting pessimism. You, good people, are the seed from which this video sprouted, so give yourselves a pat on the back.

If you decide to read into the support for candidate A or B from the video, that's fine...congrats for following the news. If you decide not to vote, ok....be voiceless and just continue to espouse points of view anonymously on blogs (like it's any different than voting...please!) I still believe the participatory act of voting is a bedrock principle of our country on how to voice dissent. Instead of bashing the act of voting or pointing out faults of a pro-voting video, what is your solution to make things in America better? Name-calling? Ridiculous. Continuing to shrug off voting as not mattering only validates the comment's author as ignorant, biased, or living in the past. Don't vote, just complain...that sure is a solid strategy for running government. If there were less of you, this video wouldn't need to exist...how bout them apples?
  • Reggie
    @Andrew

They were the funniest sure, but what about the talented actors? I always enjoy seeing Forest Whitaker, Natalie Portman, Benicio Del Toro, Laura Linney, Amy Adams, and Jamie Foxx in anything, whether they're saying "Don't vote" or waving a big knife in Johnny Depp's face (for Benicio at least).

(and the "boat" dude from Mallrats...I'm forgetting his name...)
  • Sean
The thing that I hate about these videos is that they assume that you will register to vote and thus vote democrat. I mean, they obviously want you to vote like them otherwise what's the point?
  • estrus
I'll just do what I do every year... pencil in votes for Darth Vader, Homer Simpson, and my dog (Minky Boodle). Pretty much the same outcome anyway.
  • Andrew
    @ Reggie

It's Ethan Suplee of "My Name is Earl," and I think an underrated character actor. His turns as a psycho neo-nazi in "American History X" and a half-retarded butt-rapist in "Vulgar" are some of his best work.

The best of the "straight actors" was Dustin Hoffman's bit at the end. Otherwise ... the last people who should be talking to us like we're stupid are a bunch of actors.
  • yasb
    @ed
    3) Why are Non Americans so interested in how we vote?

Maybe because you guys have a tendency to starts wars on whim, and love to get involved in other sovereign nations politics etc?

And because climate change, world economies etc are impacted by American decisions?

If i were an American citizen, i'd be pretty disappointed in the fact that foreigners take more of an interest in domestic politics then some other Americans do.

@scott wtf?, are you serious? you're the type of people that make other Americans look ignorant and selfish, read goldfarb's response

At least aussies don't have to worry about the government tapping our phone lines or torturing innocent people.
  • boisvertfj
I love how since celebrities have tons of money and have nothing better to do all day but think of the ways they rule, they think anyone should give two shits about what they think.

@yasb: Which "innocent" people would you be talking about? Terrorists are not innocent people. Name one innocent person who's been tortured by the US recently. Seriously. Don't be a drama queen. No one is tapping your phone or watching your internet. No one cares that you're up at 2 am watching porn and playing on your myspace page.
  • charles
God this is so much bullshit. " It matters not how many people vote, All that matters is who counts the votes." If anybody wants to know the truth Google a man name Alex Jones, and Google a film called ENDGAME.
  • Scott
Im well aware of how the political system works in Australia, but despite having a prime minister who still shakes in fear when the Queen or Charles arrives, the Aussies have refused time and time again to cease being part of the British monarchy.

    ... see below...

"The form of government used in Australia is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system of government. Queen Elizabeth II is the Queen of Australia, a role that is distinct from her position as monarch of the other Commonwealth realms."
  • EVGNick
"I've never done shit on drugs except for play Halo 2!"

    ...my stomach hurts from laughing!!!!!!!
  • bobbio
Just because they seem to back a specific candidate does NOT mean that they don't want you to vote even if you're going for another candidate. I want EVERYONE to vote, just because I think its important, which is the underlying message I feel that this video is trying to convey.
  • cheska
    rebuttals and comments:
natalie portman's citizenship: she has a dual citizenship. Israeli/US.

"I also find it funny that as people from other countries show an interest in American politics": off course. That's why FOREIGN POLICY is a big issue in the elections. Let's face it. America can't keep their business to themselves even if they tried or even if the whole world wanted them to.

"That OUR VOTES DON’TCOUNT": the majority's votes affect the electoral college's votes.

British Monarchy (Scott): The UK, Australia and Canada all have Prime Ministers. "Although the monarch does have the power to overrule laws... Today, it is unthinkable that the British monarch would veto an act of Parliament." This is from my Political Science book. The Magna Carta (1215) was accepted by King John and was made to limit the power of the monarch.

stars' opinions on who to vote: they did not even mention the candidates or parties.

sarcasm/condescending: well.. it worked didn't it? you guys seem to be moved to comment. whether you're gonna vote or not is arguable.. but it seemed to stir some emotion.

length: yes it IS LONG. but i still liked it.
  • Tommy Metropolis
    Im voting for Stephen Colbert.
  • Thiek
    @Frank
The innocent people that yasb is referring to are probably the innocent Iraqis that were victims of countless air strikes. Also, Iraqi convicts were tortured by American soldiers.
