Video Tour: $35 Ticket Movie Theater

Earlier this year, we asked you if you would spend $35 on a movie ticket. We told you that Village Roadshow Gold Class Cinema would be opening a bunch of 40-seat-maximum premium movie theaters with a high-end atmosphere, with food or alcohol purchases not included in the $35 ticket price (They say to expect to spend an additional $120 for food and drinks). MSNBC visited one of Roadshow’s Gold Class Cinemas, check out the video above. Thanks to /Film reader Lascelles L for the tip.

Discuss: Now that you’ve seen the cinema in full motion video, let me ask the question again: Would you spend $35 on a movie ticket?

  • Eric B.
Nice seats and wine don't make me want to buy a $35 ticket
  • peter c.
    you're doing it wrong..
  • For that cost, I hope I get a fancy hooker to tend to my needs during the movie.
  • Stryker412
Reminds me of the Hoyt's I went to in Sydney. I'd gladly pay that much for a nice night out where I don't have kids screaming or people talking on cell phones.
  • jank
    @ that guy rom
    my thoughts exactly.
  • Steelo
I'll get an HD screen and a blu ray and chill at home
  • Andrew
this actual theater isn't far from my house(10-12 miles) thing is it isn't the first of it's kind. The muvico theater 5 minutes form my work in rosemont offers a similar experience only it's more of megaplex(better food better seats kids play area and seperated 21yo+ screens(alcohol only crowd). These diffinatly grabs for the middle ages/dating crowds. I was completly not interested in this concept until I just recently got into a relationship now it's something to potentially save up for.

On a special date night maybe, but there really aren't many movies coming out of Hollywood that I would pay $35.
I make a mean martini and typically have a good bottle wine at home, so I'll save the money and watch something on DVD, which is how I see the majority of my movies these days.
  • NBear
They had this same thing in Singapore - with the full bar service, and restaurant food. I saw Matrix Revolutions in their "gold-class" and I found it to be decent, but not worth the extra cash...

I would probably go see Watchmen or like the Dark Knight in this type of theater...but only if I was feeling like blowing some money.
  • MrCavanagh
Yeah, these people can all enjoy seeing a movie in some faux lap of luxury while their house gets foreclosed. Idiots.
  • I did it in Australia; it's definitely cool once in a while for a movie you really want to enjoy with a group of people.

Also: the guy in the video said that he usually spends $60 on the movies? Even if tickets were $12 each and he's buying one for himself and his lady... is he really routinely spending $36 on concessions for the two of them? That is a hell of a lot.
  • fracaso089
thank god! now i don't have to view films with the serfs!
  • I would totally do this!!!
It'd be fun on a date or for a birthday.

Steelo... Couldn't say it better myself. I personally have a nice set up at my home. I have a 60 inch plasma, a killer surround sound setup, HD movies with HD channels and leather couches. Hey, for an extra 15 dollars more, I can buy myself an 18 pack of Budweiser, another 15 dollars can order me up some pizza and if I have my friends come on by for a movie night, we include a "pow-wow" session too. Now, how could I have it better than that. All under $155.00... lol.
  • Kraig Rasmussen
Yeah. In a word. I know it's luxurious to the point of ridiculous, especially in the case of that one crazy "high class" rich broad toward the end, but I love movies, don't you guys?

All I am saying is on a date night, when you're going to eat before a movie anyway, why not eat at the theater and see something good under optimum conditions, thus ensuring the success of the date. Not to say getting laid should be one's reason for attending movies, but attending them in this environment, it probably should be.

To slightly digress, I would go, I have no doubt, if they played rep shows of classic films, and drink my martini while watching Coppola, Scorsesse, maybe Kubrick or David Lean. Hell, Once Upon a Time in the West, with the right crowd in a place like that? Awesome.

I wonder if you can rent them out like normal movie houses.
  • JEff
I'll agree with most of what JUSTIN says.." it’s definitely cool once in a while for a movie you really want to enjoy".

IF I can keep people from talking during a movie that I really want to see with the big screen experience, then I'd pay the $35 for the ticket... once in a while.

Also... Keep in mind that the average American only sees about 2 movie a year in the theater. They watch TV the rest of the time. We who go to the movies once or twice a week are not the norm.
  • I went to something like this in Prague. Not as classy though. Full service bar and pub food instead of gourmet, but the price was actually less than that of an average ticket.
  • Dan
If I were seeing an epic movie like The Dark Knight or The Watchmen opening night...then yes, it would be worth it to me. It's the whole experience...

Or maybe seeing Atonement with my GF cause I would get a damn fine reward for that one *naughty*

Doesn't mean I'm going to do it though. Looks like you'll get stuck with rich snobs....waiters walking around all over the place annoying you....rich snobs talking throughout the movie due to them loving the sounds of their own voices...

I'd rather pay $13.50 for an IMAX ticket thank you very much...and hang out with the true fans of movies. Until you get the completely annoying comic book dorks (I'm a dork, so no judgement there) who don't know how to shut up and nearly ruin The Dark Knight for you on opening night. Bastards.
  • dan
In portland, you can go to 21 and up movies with food, beer, and wine for $5, or less, per person. It is not gourmet, but it is awesome. No way I would pay $35 for a movie with NOTHING included.
  • Ummm....besides the seats is almost exactly the same as The Movie Tavern around here and tickets are only $7 there. You also get full meals and a full bar and you can order from your seat....ill go there....

As with many things, Luxury is in the eye of the beholder. I personally can't see myself paying that much for that kind of experience and I suspect that those who would, are not really there for the movie. What would make more sense to me would be some kind of middle ground. Higher quality (and larger) all digital screens, less total seats, more room, better seating quality, better food and beverages (not restaurant level though), higher price entry price or even a type of membership fee to keep out the rif-raf. These people are trying to combine "dinner and a movie" into one stop shopping and collect on both revenue streams. I get the feeling in the future you may even have to make reservations. Luxury to me is enjoying my movies and meals on my terms and schedule, not anyone else's.

Thankfully the Arclight in Hollywood is not that expensive and not too far for me to drive. I love movies, but it would take a lot for me to spend over 20 dollars to see a movie and even 20 dollars is a little much. This is especially true with Blu-Ray becoming as available as it is.
  • I'm sorry but this is just dumb. Is going to the movies in the US such a bad experience that this looks appealing?
  • egyptnation
    HEEEEELLLLLL NO!
  • alex
You Better See A good movie!!!!
  • That guy in the video who said he currently spends $60-70... WTF?? Unless he's got 3-4 other people with him, he's spending way too much already!!!
  • estrus
    ugghhh absolutely not.
Even if I were on a date, anyone impressed by this shiite doesn't deserve my company.
It's not even the cost really, it's the principle.
.... and the potential of sitting behind that "high class" snotty slag.
  • Sometimes it's nice to be pampered, though (like renting a hot tub versus soaking in your tub.) If a guy took me out there, I'd be kind of impressed, actually.
  • BCS
Can you imagine paying 35 dollars to see Paul Blart: Mall Cop?
  • Brandon
$35 for that tiny screen? I think not.
  • Meh. Maybe for like a birthday or something special like that. However, for $35 NO ONE BETTER MAKE A PEEP!
  • Reggie
That screen is ridiculously tiny. I'd rather have the crappy audience sitting with me but have a 2 story screen. (Especially for a 20 dollar difference, hell I could pay a kid 20 bucks to sit down and shut up if they were annoying me)
  • jamie
essentially, it's the same experience but with a smaller screen and a glass of wine
  • Jeff Tennant
There's a theater like that that just opened up near me called Monaco Pictures in Huntsville, AL. The entire theater isn't seated like that, they have an upstairs that nobody under 21's allowed. The tickets to go upstairs are $15, it's nice to have gourmet food and a nice drink while watching a movie.

But, $15's my limit, never ever would I pay 35.
  • Helena
In australia there is a promotion every year where if you by an iscream and get a coupon you just need to pay for a normal full price ticket to get into gold class. that is the only way that i have been. there is no way i would pay full price for it.
  • Bren
No mention of theater tech specs. If I'm paying that much I want a massive screen, digital projection and the absolute best sound tech available at a volume and depth I can't recreate with a nice system at home. The theater itself looked unimpressive.

Just because its classy doesn't mean you don't still have to deal with annoying people. I'd rather have a kid kicking my seat than some pompous rich guy who has had one too many drinks and thinks he's funny
  • Trebek
    No.
  • andy
what about RENT: Filmed Live On Broadway?

When did have a full bar and food at a movie become something "new" worthy of droppin extra cash. The drafthouse and the IMAX in my city have had that for years. VIP theatres (21+) are the way to go.
