Punisher: War Zone Gets R-Rating

For a comic book film based on a Marvel character, official updates on the status of Punisher: War Zone remain few and far between. Back in August, rumors circulated that the December release from Lionsgate would be re-cut for a PG-13 rating. No word from the studio was released to confirm or deny this. Today, CHUD says the film has received an R-rating from the MPAA for “pervasive strong brutal violence, language and some drug use.”

Director Lexi Alexander has kept mum about her apparent severed involvement with the production. The last update on her once loud-and-proud War Zone-centric blog begins: “Sometimes you have to remind yourself of the past to create a happy future.” Some sites have reported that there is no problem(s), basing this on the optimistic words of the film’s DP, Steve Gainer, who claims that Alexander is still on board. Weirder still, I’ve come across blogs that say this is all a publicity stunt. Have we reached the point where spray painting “Who Knows?” on a turtleshell passes for marketing savvy? If so, I’d rather see clips of people getting shot.

like it even matters what rating it gets...

it won't be in theaters long enough for anyone to notice.

So its a R-rated piece of crap instead of a PC-13 piece of crap.

I've read the script, it's not really THAT BAD! It's closer to the comics than the others. It's a movie i'd probably watch once and forget but it was actually pretty interesting, and extremely bloody.

And yet Max Payne get's PG-13

I'm not even sure why the director no longer being "attached" is that big of a deal. What do the directors really do after all the directing is done? Pretty sure they have editors for the editing. While I'll admit the whole Alexander being quiet out of no where is super-odd, I'm willing to believe she did her job and did it more than well, it was it was time to turn it over to those in charge of the next step in the process.
On top of that, I'm still surprised ANYBODY thought this movie was going to get a pg-13 rating. And because of Dark Knight? What sense does that make? Especially after the movie has already been shot. They'd just be flushing money they've already spent down the toilet if they were chopping out all the ultra-violent scenes that are already on film.
But whatever, I'm still expecting this to be bloody entertaining, pun intended.
  • I'll catch it on DVD unless my brother and nephew con me in to seeing it with them. It really sucks to see Marvel do this to my favorite character...
