Miramax has released the first five minutes of Fernando Meirelles’ Blindness on Yahoo. I have yet to see the film, but I’ve heard mixed things. The cinematography and sound design is said to by the film’s strength, and you will see and hear that in this clip. The opening certainly seems compelling in every way that M Night Shyamalan’s The Happening wasn’t.

First five minutes looks very interesting. I'm wondering, however, when Miramax is going to change their title screen—the water fx get beaten out by some of today's first person shooters.

o wow. Now i'm really curious to see it. I thought the guy was stealing his car, XD. I was really freaking out, I thought he was gonna get run over.

That looks pretty intriguing actually. I'm a huge fan of Mereilles, so I'll be sure to check this one out this weekend.

Blindness is one of my favorite books of all time. I hope that the movie can live up to it. While I think that the beginning of the book could be made into a good movie, I honestly have no idea how they could film the ending. Here's hoping they don't screw up a great story to badly.

looks promising...starts very well, hopefully they continue the movie with the same momentum...

I saw this at TIFF, and I'm part of the 1/2 that saw it that liked it. I'm a massive fan of Meirelles, so maybe I'm a bit biased, but I thought it was a solid drama, with a ton of great performances. Also, props to Don McKellar for writing this script!!

looks creepy & great. i heard gael garcia bernal is badass. oh & i think the blind guy is gonna get fucked over by the 'samaritan'.
  • I just saw this movie at a screening and I absolutely hated it. I'm normally a big fan of Julianne Moore and Gael Garcia Bernal, and their acting is what kept this film alive, but as a whole it was terrible. Meirelles uses really weird camera angles which is really cool and artsy at first, but quickly turns to a really annoying gimmick. There's a bunch of unnecessary scenes and nudity and sex/rape that really made me squirm in my seat for how awful it was done. Also, I'm a stand up comedian and there were a number of parts that caused laughter that I noticed were essentially making fun of blind people, it was incredibly aggravating.

It was definitely one of the biggest disappointments this year...

Looks like another meditation on Plato's "Cave of Shadows". The way Meirreles filters the film to create the kind of effect of blindness that that asian guy described so that we are, you know, blind too. And the way he uses the repetition of and symbol of the traffic light to represent conformity on top of, from what Ive seen in the trailers, blindness being contagious really brings the whole point home. I am definitely interested in the movie and will certainly buy a movie ticket because I really want to support films like this. But that being said, I suggest everyone watch The Conformist before seeing this.

I cant fucking wait to see this. Reading how Meirreles shot the film to convey "being" blind and trying to tell a story through that and sound. Sounded amazing.
  • Great seeing anything filmed in São Paulo. Lived there for 12 years...
  • This movie is fucking great. I saw it last night, just blow my mind away.

Meirelles and Charlone create a real fell of being blind, but the movie is more than that.

You can´t close your eyes, the pic drag you to a particular world

    really a must see movie

    Count me in for this!

I saw this at a test screening several months ago and thought it was pretty bad. I enjoyed how the camera was used at different times but overall I was very disappointed and felt manipulated unnessicarily.

The trailers I have seen seem to include somethings I don't remember from my screening so I would be interested in seeing what was changed. But I will wait for the DVD to look for those changes.
  • Marcus
Is this getting a wide release anyone?? Cause it looks promising enough to see it
  • I've read the book recently and I can't wait to see how this turns out in the movie. I am very queasy though how they will do the middle part especially the rape scenes. URGH. Reviews are really off, but I'll still see it.

Blindness is a nice refreshment in the niche of apocalyptic movies. Plot is intriguing, characters are well developed. We see how people can turn into the different persons in special situation.
