UPDATE: It turns out that roughly 80% of the quotes in this memo came from FirstShowing’s Alex Billington. I should have known. ;) Alex’s glass is 80% full.

Not content with being owed one million dollars from Harvey Weinstein, vigilante blogger Nikki Finke has published an MGM internal memo that breaks down the online perception of Valkyrie 2.0 aka “Play down the eye patch and Valley Boy voice, win over graphic designers.” It makes for a pretty fascinating—if typical—look inside the Hollywood hype machine and how the Internet is a giant, throbbing Krang-like barometer. Make no mistake, all of those “awesome”s and “FAIL”s add up. Here are some enlightening highlights from the memo…

Currently, reactions to the Valkyrie trailer are significantly favorable (approximately 80%) within Entertainment, Fan-Boy, Video Sharing, Social Networks, Social Bookmarks, and Fan communities. Fans deem the trailer “fantastic,” often praising the “stylistic” way that the footage was cut and asserting that it is “way better” than the initial teaser.

But what about “the haters?” Will they “sink” Valkyrie’s suped-up battleship? No, their numbers have diminished and were “greatly exaggerated” to begin with…

The limited amount of unfavorable discussion (5%) stems from critics expressing general disinterest in the film, contending that the trailer makes Valkyrie look like “another Hollywood action movie.”

The surge is “working”…

The [new] poster comprises the majority of discussion, as fans laud the “stylized design” and hope that it represents the “gritty” feel of the film. “I definitely want one of these up on my walls right away.”

But when the “actors speak,” the buzz stumbles…

Lack of German Accents Still an Issue – While the majority of buzz about the lack of German accents is neutral, the topic is fueling discussion among online audiences. Critics contend that their absence creates a “lack of cohesiveness” while supporters believe that their inclusion would make the film appear “cheesy.”

The bottom line “…”

“the film has the potential to be “awesome” [but some viewers] still have their doubts based on the initial critical buzz.”

If a memo about this memo’s impact on viewers is leaked, we’ll let you know. Do you think Congress is privy to this type of futuristic and “extremely accurate” buzz-measuring?

Discuss: Give a number or stat that best illustrates your “anticipation.”

This was also my problem with Enemy At The Gates. Along iwth the retarded love interest. The only person who attempted a Russian accent was Hellboy.

Nazi's are tired. Let's find a new "bad guy". What about Eskimos?

It doesn't help that the retro poster has the same colors as Oceans 12.

About 95% of me says "Wow! This is a great internal memo! I would definitely hang this above my bed and read it over and over" but a limited 5% of me says "The use of italics sometimes takes away from the overall style of the memo."

    Right there in the open,

I won't support this film. 2 big reasons.
1 -can't believe the day has arrived where hollywood has made a Pro Nazi Hero film. Wtf ppl.
2 -tom cruise, sickens me. Seeing him as a nazi when I know things about him really sickens me.

(I bet toms laughing to himself, at the ppl who are going to see this film, and support it, because of who they are really supporting)

The outright blatant message here also sickens me. There not using accents because this is a slick way to
    generate empathy for the Nazis.
    Classic NLP,,,,,tactic
  • I do admit I've been won over by the new trailer. It really has got me interested, and I'm looking forward to seeing it now.

    That was creepy/weird.
Do studios normally write stuff like this?
  • ive been waiting far to long to see this movie and now im very happy that the release date is almost here. the film, to me, has looked very good since i first saw any footage from it.

    ScanCase,
This came from Nilkki Finke, she writes for a major hollywood website publication ,,,

These ppl are the viral spinmakers.
True or false dosnt mean shit anymore.
Don't trust the media... (Except honest websites like /Film) ;-)

This story is just a tactic to help the film get a fanbase going the way they want.
This film has had troubles from the first cut, they know its a piece of crap, and their trying to save and make money,,,
I'm sure they paid well, to have a badass trailer engineered.

I'm really getting sick of the omni controlled media monster that wants to inslave us.
    Die monster die!

I typically respect anyone's opinion, but find it difficult to listen to one's theories on NLP tactics and media monsters when they can't get simple spelling/grammar right.

    Basically, I second M&Co's suggestion.

Stauffenberg a Nazi? Stauffenberg -- like many other officers in the Wehrmacht -- found most aspects of Nazi ideology and practice quite repulsive: racism, religious suppression, blatant nepotism etc. His conscience, already offended by the campaign against jews launched with the Kristallnacht and the Polish campaign in 1939, finally drove Stauffenberg into the resistance within the Wehrmacht after the mass executions of civilians he had to witness during the invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941.

You can find more on him and on some others of the members of the german resistance here: http://www.gdw-berlin.de/b12/start-e.php

And if that does not convice you, there is the minor point of him being the one person to come within a table leg's width to kill Adolf Hitler.

I do not mean this as a taunt, but am honestly interested in learning where you got your image of Stauffenberg?
  • Movie aside, I have to give Hunter big props for using a Krang reference! TMNT FTW!!

This memo-writing person has incredibly duped a studio into thinking that this banal assesment is important or relevant enough to earn a salary. It smells like the same spin we get out of any number of vacuous politicians that really don't have an answer, but will do whatever is necessary to keep their boss sending a paycheck.

It's actually pretty brilliant. I want their job.
  • NINJARTIST
    790,

    NonJARTIST ...?

Well see that's the thing, I can't focus on your points because they're utter drivel. This movie is about people trying to STOP the Nazi regime. You're conspiring for the sake of it.

I don't know how pointing out your grammar problems means I don't have balls, but that just further leads me to assume that yours haven't dropped.

Well, I don't normally bicker on forums, but that was fun... Btw, you win.
    Game over, man.

Now for a weak mockery of your name:
How about a round of applause for,,,,,,,,,, 780,,,,, Congratulations!!
  • 790
What the hell? Did I type that? (Must have been late) ;-)
Sorry, NINJARTIST,,, (btw Nonja is a Speed Racer joke) I'm not looking to bicker with ya, and oh yeah my grammer and spelling suck everyone here knows that.
(By the way its a good thing I don't get paid for my grammer at work...)

My point is this,,, I realise Valkyrie is trying to stop Hitler, I just have a prob with films glorifying nazis, in any way....
If you do your research on what really went down with Valkyrie, you'll see that he's no hero, he's a war criminal that if victorious would have gone on with the war in other evil directions. Were not talking about a hero, he was more of a pathetic oportunist nazi.

I would love to see a film based on what really went down after Hitler starting going crazy with siphalis.
Even more so, a film exposing the Thule group and the flying saucer work they were doing in secret during the war.
  • 790
Good info, does it say what Stauffenberg's plans were if he was successfull?

We are talking about Stauffenberg and, by extension, about the many other men of the German resistance. Since in your view, being alienated by Nazi ideology does not free one from the categorisation as "Nazi", nor does conspiring to bring down the Nazi leadership: may I respectfully ask what would?

Again, I am in no way trying to taunt, but am instead honestly interested in the sources of the image you describe: could you please direct me to those sources of your research?

No hero? Opportunist? These men risked and most of them lost their lives in the attempt to overthrow an regime they recognised as corrupt and unethical and that had unleashed a war they saw as equally unwinnable and abhorrent in its results.
  • jpj
    @790,

    you wrote

    > does it say what Stauffenberg’s plans were if he was successfull?

To begin with, Stauffenberg was far from alone. So the question should be, what plans did the resistance have? Their goals were to

    - immediately stop the pogroms and killings
    - the restoration of the people's liberties -- though without the Weimar parlamentary system they believed to have failed and to have allowed the Nazi power grab
    - the preservation of Germany as a country
    - a separate peace with the western allies -- since they believed that Stalin would not agree to any peace that would grant him less than the western allies had promised him, i.e. all of eastern Europe and half of Germany.

To answer this question further, I may cite Thomas Fleming, who wrote in 1994 wrote in the New York Times:

"A negotiated peace with anti-Nazi Germans in early or even mid-1944 probably would have saved the lives of two million soldiers -- and three million Jews. East Germany and perhaps much of Eastern Europe would have been spared 50 years of incarceration in the twilight world of Soviet Communism." http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=...

    you requested:

    > I would love to see a film based on what really went down

Such a movie exists. It's called "Downfall" and was released in 2004: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0363163/

Personally, I think "Valkyrie" will fail. It will fail because of exactly the IMHO nescience and disinformation pervading most of the movie-going public. What I would like to know is what sources feed what I still think of as disinformation. And it is through that wish that I repeat my plea: Would you mind taking the trouble to tell me where you got your information from? Which magazines? Schoolbooks? Internet?

    BTW Hitler actually had Parkinson.

    Negative eleventy-five on the anticipameter.

But if it gets great reviews I'll watch it on dvd.
