Director Ridley Scott tells MTV that not only will Russell Crowe play The Sheriff in his upcoming revisionist take on the Robin Hood story, but the actor will be doing double duty as Robin Hood.

Nottingham is a 180 degree spin of the Robin Hood story-line where the Sheriff is the protagonist and Robin Hood is the bad guy. The Sheriff finds himself caught in the middle of a situation which pits an outlaw named Robin Hood who “who threatens to rouse the public in popular anarchy” and a corrupt and unpopular king who demands the arrest of the outlaw.

The script was subject to a 2007 bidding war between most of the major studios. Crowe has been attached to the project since it was announced, even before Scott was brought on board. Christian Bale was once incorrectly rumored to play the famous outlaw. The project was put on hold in July due to “labor trouble”. Crowe is certainly capible to play both roles, but it still seems like an odd or unnecessary decision.

Update: CHUD clarifies the entire casting story with the news that Robin Hood and The Sheriff are actually the same person.

Discuss: What do you think of this unconventional casting decision?

  • didnt scott tell this bout a month or two ago ? or did he change his mind and now he doing it again?
  • ddog, he said this at the Body of Lies junket this weekend. Not sure if the production is 100% back on, last I heard it was still on hold, but Crowe is his choice for both Hood and the Sheriff
  • cool deal peter. i got confused.
  • Maybe the Sheriff IS Robin Hood? I hope that isn't some big twist to be revealed during the course of the movie, in which case... SPOILER ALERT.
  • Jamie
    Crowe also plays Maid Marion.
  • Justin
This could be very interesting. Perhaps Scott is going to try and point out the fine line between lawmen and criminal. ie the same man pushed a little differently. Or he could be changing it up and making them brothers. That could be an interesting twist.
  • nick
CB would have been better, but this will be interesting. If anyone can do it, he can.
  • I would trust Ridley Scott and Russel Crowe with my malnourished asthmatic baby . Can't wait.

There has been some "very unofficial" speculation about this for a while now, but this recent announcement is the closest thing I've seen to a more real possibility for it. While it IS surely different, it just may well fit with Scott's 'different' take on the old legend. Crowe is more than capable of playing it, too, whatever the take...brothers, simply look-alikes, cousins, evil twin...you name it. In all his movies Crowe has morphed into his roles so that often you can hardly tell the same man has played, say, Jeffrey Wigand and Maximus. If they decide to go with two totally unrelated men in this, he can do it and you'll feel like you're watching two different actors. He might like the challenge of pulling that off. Anyway, I'm looking forward to this movie since Scott's so good at recreating 'worlds' and Crowe's so good at fitting naturally into them. I do find myself wishing someone a bit more mature than Sienna Miller would be Marion. When they first talked of casting some young squirt as Robin, it seemed like it might be the young couple and the old sheriff. This way, if Russ IS both male parts of the triangle, at least we won't have to be dealing with that!

crowe is an amazing actor. and i have faith in ridley scott, so i'm pretty intereted in seeing this. interesting casting, but i have no problems with it
  • Dan
Here's hoping for JCVD-esque attention to detail like pumping iron before he shoots scenes as The Sheriff. If it's as awesome as DOUBLE IMPACT I'll be happy.
  • south texas terror
Crowe will play lil john too
  • Wall•E Plays Pong
I'm not excited about the synopsis, seems like it could be a little right wing. Robin Hood as a villain rousing the pubic against an unpopular king? Seems like an argument against the rousing of the public towards unpopular authority figures like Bush. Depends I suppose on how they portray the King; if he really is corrupt it could make things interesting, forcing the Sheriff to wonder who's really worth supporting. But if the King is portrayed as benevolent but misunderstood, might as well be propaganda.

"Crowe will play lil john too"

... In addition to a fat-suit version of mama John, grandpa John, and the ever-flatulent great grandmama John.

Anyway, this news makes me think that his double-casting might turn out as funny as Austin Power and Dr. Evil.
  • tony from CA
lol at Jaime.... this whole movie will be played by Crowe ala "nutty professor meets Robin Hood"
  • Faye
Weird choice...*shrugs* as long as it comes out better than Costner's version. So corny...

I would've liked to see Bale as Robin Hood. Crowe could be the Sheriff...but yeah, either way, we'll see how it all goes down.
  • Bill
So I guess Crowe won't be playing two different characters, Robin Hood and the sheriff will be the same guy? is this correct?
  • Gary
This sounds like its going to suck to me,
  • Layne
With Crowe in this movie, no way will it "suck"! An actor of his caliber can not only pull it off, he can make it look easy. This will be an interesting challenge for both Russell and Ridley. An interesting addition to their collaborations.
  • Russell Crowe is WAY too old to play Robin Hood!
Sheriff of Nottingham: fine. I'd even be down for him playing the King. But Robin Hood? It just doesn't work...
As for him playing both characters, that is such an unnecessary ploy. I feel that it would take away from the interesting concept that the script posed.
  • Ryan
No one has mentioned Motion Capture? That seems like the obvious concept here. I would assume that Ridley Scott may be trying his hand at it.

    Who knows, though.

I like the idea of making a hated lawman the protagonist though. Every story has two sides.
  • simon
is there any chance that his just f-ing with us? that's what i'm hoping for
  • WillTheSecond
The plot sounds vaguely satirical so is it gonna be like Dr Strangelove now? They gonna add a comedy element?

Seriously, though, this project is interesting but I'm not sure about casting him for both parts unless there is a good plot reason.
  • Jo
I don't see why folks think this, then, would have to make the film intended to be some sort of comedy. I think, if this is at all true...and with all the TV interviews Russ has got coming up in the next couple of weeks...Leno Monday nite, for instance...I'm fairly sure he'll be asked about this, don't you think...anyway, if it's at all true, then both Ridley and Crowe are quite serious about it as a psychological exploration. Russ has already said that there's no point in making a Robin Hood movie if you don't make the best one ever. A comedy wouldn't do that. This is not intended as any sort of Men In Tights. And if you go see Body of Lies when it comes out soon, you'll also see it's not going to be any right-wing polemic as one commentor feared. BOL gives Ridley's viewpoint on such matters. And I'm not saying if I agree or disagree with that, but simply that he's said this is how HE feels about government matters.
It's also not clear at all at this point if he's playing two characters or one character with two sides. But however it's done, he's got the chops to do it up grand.
  • gocitizen
I'm going to guess that the two are brothers, with a slight chance that the Sherrif and the Hood are the same person. This would be different enough that I can now understand Scott wanting to explore this story.
  • Hendo
If the twist is going to be that they're long lost twin brothers I'm gonna be pissed.
  • Ghost
    @ Jo

I was thinking the same thing that the use of the same actor playing two polar opposites is a play on the psychological, meaning it doesn't matter why they both look the same it's their actions and their ways of thought that are different.

Much like in the Burton film Big Fish where Helena Bonham played the major women in the main character's life simply because there was only his wife (Jessica Lange/Alison Lohman) and everyone else (played by Burton's wife).
  • I sure hope this works. Man, seeing one person besides Eddie Murphy take on two roles at the same time is interesting. Well... Crowe is not Murphy so I think this movie has better potentials for success.
  • Russell Crowe is talented, as is Ridley Scott, however, Scott can be hit and miss sometimes. Hopefully he's on his game for this one.
  • Luminella
I think that it's a great idea myself! It's new territory for both Ridley, and Russell, and I'll bet that they will not only make it work brilliantly, but have a blast doing it! I'm certainly NOT going to complain about seeing Russell twice on screen!
  • seanovan
This actually looked really good as I was reading it,
until you posted the spoiler at the end.

    Thanks!!!!11!!one!
  • The Gajonka
a'hem, QAKE UP, THERE IS NOTHING UNCONVENTIONAL ABOUT THIS CASTIN EXCEPT AN ANGRY BLOGGER! CROWE IS ONE OF THE LAST REMAINING GOOD ACTORS, THE MORE HE IS CAST, THE BETTER, AS LONG AS HE DOESNT WEAR A GREY TOUPEE LIKE IN THE INSIDER AND BODY OF LIES
  • Mr. Comedian
Um, yeah... Might want to throw a "spoiler" tag on there at the end.
  • mjkbk
Russell says this story is not true. See his longtime fansite, Murph's Place, http://www.murphsplace.com/crowe/news.html.
  • Apparently Ridley Scott enjoys working with Russell Crowe; and he likes to make movies that raise international awareness (i'm thinking Blackhawk Down and Kingdom of Heaven)... that's a good thing i'd say
