Paul Newman Dies at Age 83

Oscar-winning film legend Paul Newman has died of cancer at the age of 83. A statement from Newman’s family said: “His death was as private and discreet as the way he had lived his life.”

Newman’s filmography included: Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Exodus, The Hustler, Torn Curtain, Cool Hand Luke, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting, The Towering Inferno, Slap Shot, The Verdict, The Color of Money, The Hudsucker Proxy, Nobody’s Fool, Message in a Bottle, Road to Perdition, and Cars. Newman was set to reprise the role of Doc Hudson in Pixar’s Cars 2.

He will be missed. Leave your tributes, thoughts, and comments about Newman and his career in the comments below.

I thought others might appreciate what Alec Baldwin wrote on Paul Newman's passing:

You can think about greatness and generosity and images of a youthful grace and beauty. You can think about children, sick children, playing in camps. Salad dressing. And popcorn.

You can think about him hobbling on a crutch, feigning indifference, while Elizabeth Taylor urged him on in her lingerie. The two most beautiful actors in all of film, and they just argued. You knew how alcoholic and sick Brick was if he wasn't dying for Elizabeth Taylor.

You can think about racing cars and diving into rivers with Redford and, with Redford again, shaking down Robert Shaw.

Left-handed Gun. Hard-boiled eggs. Torn Curtain. Hud. Hudsucker. So many movies. Six decades of them.

Joanne. Paul and Joanne. And their family.

I think of The Verdict. That great scene with Jack Warden, where Frank Galvin is on the phone, begging the other side to reconsider his own reconsideration of their settlement offer. The hyperventilating desperation crushing his pride. One of the greatest scenes in one of the greatest movies of the last 50 years.

    God...Newman was a great actor.

Paul Newman has always been my definition of a Real Man. He was an example of how great a single man can be and how that man can fit into and improve the world around him.

Paul Newman was kind, generous, talented, faithful, thoughtful, funny, passionate, and a craftsman and artist with a strong work ethic. Everything a real man should be, and he made it all seem effortless...which is his true genius.

Today's men can learn a lot from Paul Newman, and would probably find their lives much more fulfilling by following his example.

I knew this day would come, more than likely sooner than later after the announcement this year, and I dreaded it. It is heartbreaking, but I am sure that Paul Newman's long life was lived to the fullest in every single way, and that makes me happy. He is a man who's life doesn't just have a handful of good chapters, but is a sweeping epic from start to finish.

Always a pleasure to watch a true actor make it look so easy on screen and always so easy to watch. A generous and giving man. My heart goes out to his family. He will truly be missed!

this man was a hero to me since I was a child. unlike most childhood heroes, he remained one even when I bacame more skeptic about the whole idea of heroism in later days.
great looks and talent, great integrity and personality, great career choices and a down-to-earth personal life. a real role model.
he will not be forgotten. I will still try to be a little like paul newman for the rest of my life.

Terribly sad news, though it had been coming for some time.

He was a terrific actor. The NY Times had a nice obit that had a few quotes that, I think, helped point to what was so special about him.

I would just add that I think the filmography listed above mentions a few lesser films while making two key omissions- Hud and Never Give an Inch (also known as Sometimes a Great Notion).

I watched The Verdict a couple of weeks ago, alongside rewatching Michael Clayton this week, and I couldn't help but see a lot of Newman in Clooney's performance in Clayton (and Sidney Pollak's involvement certainly helped). Interesting when you remember the Robert Redford / Brad Pitt comparisons that came after Spy Game.

    RIP Paul Newman

I was looking forward to hearing his voice on screen again with cars 2.

    YOU WILL TRULY BE MISSED

    Butch Cassidy: You jump first.
    Sundance Kid: No, I said.
Butch Cassidy: What's the matter with you?
    Sundance Kid: I can't swim.
Butch Cassidy: Are you crazy? The fall will probably kill you.

    You'll be missed, sir.

A legend among men, class among actors
  • spikeshinizle
He was one of the last few Hollywood actors who had that traditional 'class'. R.I.P, you will be missed, your work however, will live on forever.
  • Bummed out totally. PN starred in three of my all-time Top 10... BUTCH, STING, SLAP SHOT. On top of that, a BUTCH/STING double feature were the first two "grown up" movies I ever saw in the theater. And Reggie Dunlap was the only made-up player I ever created in Sega NHL 95. Add in that both my wife and niece hung out with Newman at races and said he was the nicest guy they'd ever met tells me that he's somebody in the industry that'll truly be missed. Farewell Reggie Dunlap.
  • An absolute icon. R.I.P.

Paul Newman went to my high school and lived in a house close to mine.....he truly was a classy gentleman.

Irreplaceable. I wanted to be Paul Newman.

Cool Hand Luke is one of my all-time favorite films...

Paul Newman was a good man and deserves a moment of silence and a lifetime of respect.
  • The epitome of a class act. Rest in peace.

Such a classy man. He made everything better: salads, car racing, Robert Redford, films, the world. He will be missed.
  • Nick
Damn, I was really dreading this day.

I'll remember him not only for his incredible ability as an actor but more importantly the incredible person he portrayed. His charitable work was and will continue to be a true testament to the type of guy he was. He's still got the best salad dressing out there and I'll be thinking about him the next time I see his smiling face on the front of his products.

    Thanks Paul, rest in peace.

I am very sad and sorry to hear that Mr. Newman has passed. He has been consistently one of my favorite actors and there has been no better team up then he and Robert Redford. He brought a certain class to films and that will be missed terribly.

Everyone in hollywood's dropping dead this year... who's next? Oh well, can't say the man didn't live a full one. Reminds all of us not to sweat the little stuff too much. Cuz it's all over one day.
  • Mr. F
It is a shame that the world has lost another shining light.
We can only hope that the younger generation of actors & actresses can live up to the standard he set.

I actually first heard about his death on Sportscenter, and that says a lot I think.

In a generation of actors that've become screen legends, he was both ever present (film, race cars, salad dressing, etc) and cross generational (performing memorably along side Redford, Gleason, Hanks and Cruise, amoung many others) and yet, I don't anyone could ever get tired of Paul Newman.

Rest in peace, indeed, Mr. Newman.
