Lethal Weapon 5 Waits on Mel Gibson’s Approval

In August it was revealed that Shane Black was working on a screenplay for Lethal Weapon 5. When news hit earlier this week that Black had signed on to direct Cold Warrior for Universal, we assumed that the momentum for a new Lethal Weapon film had died. Entertainment Weekly reveals that producer Joel Silver is waiting on series star Mel Gibson’s approval of Black’s treatment for the fifth film. Apparently, the story introduces a new pair of young NYPD police officers, and Silver needs Gibson’s approval before moving forward. And Black still intends to direct the fifth film in the series.

sweet, shane black is awesome. watched last boy scout the other day for the first time in ages, forgot how good the dialogue is!

'just trying to break the ice...'

    'I like ice....leave it the f*ck alone'
  • ummm...
  • why is Richard Donner not attatched to direct?!

Shane Black is cool and all. he's done a lot for the Lethal Weapon franchise. but uh, this is no different than George Lucas or Larry Kasden doing Indy V.

Ive had my hope for Lethal Weapon 5, but Im really pissed about Donner not even being MENTIONED.

While I'm very happy about the prospect of Lethal Weapon 5 becoming a reality, I think I don't want "a new pair of young NYPD police officers" introduced. I don't want the franchise to have a new pair of buddy cops to fall back on for future movies.....and I don't want the series set in NY instead of LA. If Mel Gibson doesn't want to go beyond LW5, then the franchise should end there. Heck, with Mel Gibson in it, I would pay to see Lethal Weapon 55!! I think most fans of the series will agree with me that Mel Gibson IS Lethal Weapon. Without him, Shane Black should just write a new premise and come up with a different name for it. We fans will accept no substitutions.

I just have one thing to say, and I mean it from the bottom of my heart. If Mel Gibson does Lethal Weapon 5 and not Mad Max Fury Road... he is a fucking idiot who is robbing cinema of something great.

I'm happy about this, but not sure if Murtaugh is right about them being too old for this shit.

So does this mean Gibson could do another Mad Max film?
  • Do Not Want.

As long as one of the "young NYPD police officers" isnt Shia LeDouche, I can't wait.

    YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
what? Murtagh and Riggs as old Mall security guards?
there is nothing more pathetic than rehashing a series that should have ended with some dignity.

i hope Gibson rejects any sequel idea. i dont care who writes or directs it.

the only thing worse that old actors trying to play "young" roles are washed up rock stars still trying to "rock"

and you know who i mean.....Stones, Stix, Dio, Kiss, etc...etc.....
  • meh. no need for another lethal weapon. i'm sick of seeing my 80s idols old and trying to kick ass.

    please. stop.

As an audience, we're too old for this shit.

In the last LW glover couldnt even shoot a decent action sequence. They should make glover the new captain and have gibson train the two young guys on the job.

i rather have mel make another movie. Apocalypto was amazing.

I can't believe that people would back an Indiana Jones 4 and not this.

LW 4 was a disgrace and it needs to go out on a high note. Like Rocky Balboa to Rocky V.

This is Shane Black's chance to get his career back on track.

Bring it on... as long as Mel's attached.
  • Sure why not?...come on Mel you know you wanna do it.
  • gg
    sean ur an ass

I'm concerned about the new young NYPD officers being introduced.

Especially as Riggs and Murtaugh are LAPD.
  • Rob
I think that if LW5 is made, it should stay with Glover and Gibson. The first LW revolved around some drug running, the second revolved around South African oppressors, the 3rd revolved around a rogue cop selling guns, the 4th revolved around counterfeiting and introduced Jet Li to the US .... But the possible 5th entry should not only be the FINAL entry, but one about POLICE CORRUPTION. Riggs and Murtaugh clean it up.

If you dont want to see it, dont watch it. I know where i will be if this comes out - front row!. Lethal Weapon 1-4 were the best movies. Don't know where the negative stuff is coming from about 4, it was a pissa. Uncle Benny still cracks me up. "FLIED RICE YOU PLICK". Has to have Mel in it. should be LAPD though, and why not RIGGS and Biscuits, I mean Butters, with Murtaugh as the captain????To hear that Beverley Hills Cop IV and Lethal Weapon 5 are good possibilities makes 2009 the best year ever. huge fan

I hope they don't do it. "Lethal Weapon 4" was great. It was one series that maintained its mojo all the way through. But with Riggs married and a father, the premise is officially concluded. Shane Black's movies are always worth seeing. If you never saw "The Last Boy Scout" - what are you waiting for? But I hope they let this series stand.
